قُلتُ وَقَد أَقبَلَ ياقوتُ
في فَمِهِ دُرٌّ وَياقوتُ
I said, as Yaqut drew near:
In his mouth are pearls and rubies.
أَسِنَّةٌ زُرقٌ بِأَجفانِهِ
أَم جالَتِ البيضُ المَصاليتُ
Are there steel-blue spearheads at his eyelids,
or have keen, gleaming swords swept there?
كَأَنَّما أَلحاظُهُ بابِلٌ
فيهِنَّ هاروتُ وَماروتُ
As though his glances were Babylon—
within them are Harut and Marut.
