وَصاحِبٍ يَتَلَقّاني لِحاجَتِهِ
بِالرَحبِ وَهوَ مَليحُ الخَلقِ وَالخُلُقِ
And many a companion greets me because he has need of me,
with a lavish welcome, fair in form and character.
حَتّى إِذا ما اِنقَضَت وَلّى وَخَلَّفَني
أَخَسَّ مِن جُرَذٍ في بَيتِ مُرتَفَقِ
Then, once his need is fulfilled, he turns away, leaving me
more despised than a rat in the chamber of a man at ease—
كَالماءِ بَينا تَرى الظَمآنَ يَشرَبُهُ
حَتّى يُبَدِّدَ باقيهِ عَلى الطُرُقِ
like water: while you watch the thirsty man drink it,
until he spills what remains of it along the roads.
