Shine upon us, O rising moon,
The stars of wine,
And cut up our night with cups
Until the dawn rises
Upon the charms of the eyes
And the cheeks and lips
Of the brown-skinned girls
Who are like the horns.
From her face we have a moon
And from her melodies a singer
Thus should the grey-haired drink
Like me, O people of poetry
Thus on the eve of Friday
On the eve of Destiny
With the lads in the taverns
Between drums and pipes
Where is the son of Malikdad
And where is the son of Abu Durr
Two jesters, two buffoons
With neither fortune nor honour
