Patience from Najd is more bitter than patience itself
Since the night Layla left, my nights have had no dawn
I used to weep from the pangs of separation in seclusion
But when we parted, I wept for the separation itself
If my heart were a rock, they would make it weep
Like al-Khansa' wept over the rock one day
I suffer passion in the late night and at dawn
With the Najdi love's chill, alive with chaste love's fever
I die but no thousand delights would appease
My foe, nor any bonds strengthen my ally
