ما اِجتَمَعَ الشَطرَنجُ في مَجلِسٍ

وَالنَردُ ذاتُ القيلِ وَالقالِ

Neither chess nor backgammon players gathered

Chatting idly back and forth

إِلّا لَعَنتَ الشَيخَ نوحاً وَلَم

أَقصُر مِنَ اللَعنِ عَلى الصولي

Without cursing old Noah

Nor did their curses fall short of the hag

لِأَنَّها لِقُبحِ ما عِندَها

تُقَدِّمُ الشاةَ عَلى الفَيلِ

For in their eyes nothing could be more vile

Than to favor a sheep over an elephant
