وَأَنساهُ وَفي الدُنيا مَشوقُ

How can a lover forget me

When I cannot forget him, though we are far apart

يُذَكِّرهُ اِنسِكابَ المُزنِ دَمعي

وَتُذَكِّرُني ثَناياهُ البُروقُ

My falling tears should remind him

And his lightning smile reminds me

أَعاذِلُ كَيفَ أَسلو عَن شَقيقٍ

تَساوَت وَجنَتاهُ وَالشَقيقُ

How can I ask after a cheek

Whose apple is the same pink as the rose?

وَاِطَّرَحَ المُدامُ وَفيهِ مِنها

ثَلاثٌ مُقلَةٌ وَفَمٌ وَريقُ

The wine spills over the cup

With three bubbles, a mouthful, a trickle

أَعاذِلُ قَلَّ صَبري زادَ شَوقي

حَمَلتُ مِنَ الهَوى ما لا أُطيقُ

My patience grows scarce, my longing more

I bear a love too great to endure

أَوَدِّعُهُ وأودِعُهُ فُؤادا

يُعَذِّبُهُ التَفَرُّقُ وَالفَريقُ

I bid him farewell, and a heart farewell
