Death has delayed you, O heedless one,

And death does not forget, while your heart is oblivious.

Woe to the weak human! Does he not have

Aversion to ignorance before death comes to him.

You have busied yourself with the world, crying over it,

Running after it, while heedless of the Day of Resurrection.

Life is sweet and death is bitter.

The abode is an abode of ostentation and vanity.

So occupy yourself with something other than it

And do not be heedless of it, for you have gone astray.

It does not please you that it be said you are eloquent

    Or possess great status.

Reform the corruption of your inner self,

With which you are preoccupied, and fear God's reckoning.

    Asceticism in a adamant liar,

Who denies the resurrection, is but misguidance and folly.

I see this speech as improper, even if

You outwardly demonstrate something other than these vain words.

    I saw you feigning asceticism,

While we need its likeness from you.

If wearing wool is your proof by which

You claim salvation, then I forbid you from it.

There is nothing in your garb, if the inner self strays

From you, other than a weak rope.

Nothing is accepted from you except that by which

The voices of the mouths have judged you.

The matter, woe to you, is still up to you

As long as you have not equaled our God.
