عَفا رَسمُ القُرَيَّةِ فالكَثيبُ
إِلى مَلحاءَ لَيسَ بِها عَريبُ
Gone is the outline of the village, to barren sand
With no Bedouin tents.
تأيَّدَ رَسمُها وَجَرى عَلَيها
سَفيُّ الريحِ وَالتُربُ الغَريبُ
Its outline has vanished, windswept by gusts
And strange drifting sand.
فَإِنَّكَ واطِّراحَكَ وَصل سُعدى
لأُخرى في مَوَدَّتِها نُكوبُ
You pitched camp, then struck it to join
Another, more beloved.
كَثاقِبَةٍ لِحليٍ مُستَعارٍ
بِأُذنَيها فَشانَهُما الثُقوبُ
Like a needle piercing borrowed finery,
It left two holes.
فَرَدَّت حَليَ جارَتِها إِلَيها
وَقَد بَقيَت بأذنَيها نُدوبُ
She returned her neighbor's jewelry
Though scars remained in her ears.
