We weep over ruined encampments and a lifeless tent-trench,
and crouching hearthstones, black-cheeked and motionless,
left bare after the cooking pots and their owners,
then huddled, once they were gone, around clinging ash.
They shielded it from the east wind’s sport, until it seemed
a wasting invalid, whose tears ring out among women visiting the sick.
