عَهدي بِهِم وَسَرابُ البيدِ مُنصَدِعٌ
عَنهُم وَقَد نَزَلوا ذا لُجَّةٍ صَخِبا
My covenant with them was like a mirage in the desert,
Vanishing, when they went down into the rugged valley.
مُشَمِّراً بارِزَ الساقَينِ مُنكَفِتاً
كَأَنَّهُ خافَ مِن أَعدائِهِ طَلَبا
Hitching up his skirt, he walks with legs bare
As though fearing his enemies' pursuit.
وَقَد رَموا بِهِضابِ الحَزنِ ذايَسَرٍ
وَخَلَّفوا بَعدُ عَن أَيمانِهم شَرَبا
Yet they shot the arrows of sorrow at him from the right,
And after their vows, left him thirsty.
