1. بِعَزمك لُذْ إِذا عَزَّ النَصيرُ

    وَلا يَعبثْ بهمَّتِكَ الفُتورُ

    With your resolve, take heart when helpers are few

    And let not indifference make your purpose limp

  2. وَأُسهَرُ في ظَلام الخَطب جفناً

    لَهُ مِن فكرِهِ قَمَرٌ مُنيرُ

    My eyes stay awake in the dark of calamities

    With thoughts that are moonlit and clear

  3. وَلا تَكلِ الأُمورَ إِلى بَنانٍ

    تَكون لِغَيرِها تِلكَ الأَمورُ

    Do not leave matters to the negligent

    For those affairs will belong to others

  4. فَأَصدقُ مِن سَعى لَكَ أَنتَ فيما

    تُحاولُه وَأَنتَ بِهِ الجَديرُ

    I am more truthful in striving for you

    In what you attempt, for you are most deserving

  5. وَقَد تَلقَى الأُمور إِلى غيورٍ

    وَلَكن رُبما سئمَ الغيورُ

    Matters may be left to the vigilant

    But even the vigilant may grow weary

  6. أَتمَُّ مُناكَ ما تَسعى إَلَيهِ

    بِنَفسكَ عامِداً لا تَستَعيرُ

    Complete what you seek by yourself

    Upright, not relying on others

  7. تَناوَلت البُدورُ ضياءَ شَمسٍ

    فَلَم تَستَغنِ بِالشَّمسِ البُدورُ

    The full moons gained the light of the sun

    Yet with the sun, the full moons couldn't dispense

  8. وَلَسنا الجاحِدينَ لَفَضلِ قَومٍ

    لَهُم ما بَينَنا فَضلٌ شَهيرُ

    We don't deny the merit of some people

    Among us their excellence is well known

  9. رِجالٌ أَحسَنوا صُنعاً وَلَكِن

    بِما في البَيتِ صاحِبهُ الخَبيرُ

    They have done good work, but still

    The expert is master in his own home

  10. بَني أُمي أَفيقوا مِن سُباتٍ

    لِطولِ زَمانِهِ سئمَ السَّريرُ

    My kinsmen, awake from your slumber

    For the bed has grown weary of its long use

  11. إِذا مَضَتِ الحَياةُ عَلى رُقادٍ

    تَشابَهَتِ المَضاجعُ وَالقُبورُ

    When life passes in sleep

    Beds and graves become all the same

  12. مَعاذَ اللَهِ مِن أَمرٍ عَظيمٍِ

    بَغى إِدراكُهُ همٌّ صَغيرُ

    God forbid such a grave thing

    Whose realization would tax the petty

  13. فَإِن الأَمرَ حَيثُ غَدا خَطيراً

    يُرامُ ازاءهُ الجُهدُ الخَطيرُ

    When the matter has grown dangerous

    Perilous efforts must meet it head on

  14. فَقم بِالأَمرِ عَن قَلبٍ سَليمٍٍ

    يُعاضدُ صِدقَهُ العَزمُ الجَسورُ

    So take on the task with a sound heart

    Backed by resolute, daring determination

  15. وَلا تَذهَبْ بِكَ الأَهواءُ يَوماً

    فَراكِبُ سبلِها غاوٍ عَثورُ

    And never let desires lead you astray

    For desire's pursuers stumble and fall

  16. أَرانا بَاللسانِ قَد اِشتَبَهنا

    وَما يُجدي إِذا اِختَلَفَ الضَميرُ

    Our tongues may confuse us

    When the heart and conscience differ

  17. لِكُل الطَّير أَجنِحَةٌ وَريشٌ

    وَلَكِن بَينَها ما لا يَطيرُ

    All birds have wings and feathers

    Yet between them are those that cannot fly

  18. وَإِن الحَقَّ بَينَ الناسِ شَمسٌ

    عَلى أُفُقِ العُقولِ لَها ظُهورُ

    Truth between people is a sun

    Rising on the horizon of minds

  19. فَمِنهُ لأَكبُدِ الجهلاءِ نارٌ

    وَمِنهُ لِأَعيُنِ العُقلاءِ نُورُ

    To the eyes of the wise it's light

    To the livers of fools it's fire

  20. فَهُبوا بِالتَّعاضُدِ يا لِقَومي

    ليحسُنَ مِن عَواقِبِنا المَصيرُ

    So unite, my people, in cooperation

    That our ending may be good

  21. وَنَظفَر بَعدَ طُولِ عَناً وَجُهدٍ

    بِما سلَبتَهُ أَيدينا الدُّهورُ

    And after long hardship and toil

    Reclaim what time has robbed from our hands

  22. وَنَرفَعُ لِلحَضارةِ كُلَّ صَرحٍ

    تَمرُّ بِهِ السَّحائبُ إِذ تَسيرُ

    And for civilization raise up every edifice

    Over which the clouds pass as they move

  23. أَلَسنا مِن سُلالةِ مَن تَحَلَّتْ

    بِذكرِهُمُ الصَّحائفُ وَالعُصورُ

    Are we not descendants of those whose fame

    Filled annals and ages of yore?

  24. وَأَبدوا في المَعارفِ كُلَّ شَمسٍ

    يُزانُ بِحُسنِ بَهجَتِها الأَثيرُ

    Who shone like suns in knowledge

    With splendor the ether extols

  25. لِنَقْفُ سَبيلَهم وَنجدُّ دَهراً

    بِعَزمٍ لا يَملُّ وَلا يَخورُ

    Let's follow their path and spend an age

    With resolve that never wanes or grows old

  26. وَلا نَفخَرْ بِمَجدِهِمُ قَديماً

    فَذَلكَ عِندَنا عارٌ كَبيرُ

    And not pride ourselves on their ancient glory

    For to us that's a disgrace so severe

  27. أَيَنشئُ مِن تَقدُّمِنا المَعالي

    فَإِن بِلَغَتْ أَيادينا تَبورُ

    Shall we build greatness from our progress?

    If our hands can reach, they will grasp and hold

  28. كَأَنّي بِالبِلادِ تَنوحُ حُزناً

    وَقَد أَودى بِبَهجَتِها الثُّبورُ

    I see the countries weeping in sorrow

    For their delight is destroyed by desolation

  29. يَحِنُّ الأَرزُ في لُبنانَ شَجواً

    وَتَندُبُ بَعدَ ذاكَ المَجد صُورُ

    The cedars of Lebanon mourn in lament

    And ruins mourn the past's expiration

  30. وَتَدمُرَ في دَمارٍ مُستَمرٍ

    وَما سُكَّانها إِلّا النُّسورُ

    Damascus is destroyed without cease

    And none live there but the eagles

  31. وَأَضحَتْ بَعلَبَكَّ وَلَيسَ فيها

    سِوى خِرَبٍ لِعزَّتها تُشيرُ

    Baalbek, and there is nothing in it

    Except ruins hinting of its honor

  32. تُهاجِمُها الحَوادثُ كُلَ يَومٍ

    كَما هَجَمَتْ عَلى الرَّخمِ الصُقورُ

    Events attack it daily

    As eagles swooped down on prey

  33. فَلَو دَرَتِ البِلادُ بِما عَراها

    لَكادَتْ مِن تَلَهُّفِها تَمُورُ

    If the country knew what has bared it

    It would nearly faint in its zeal

  34. فَيا لِلّهِ مِن حَدَثٍ مُريبٍ

    بِهِ تُشجَى المَآقي وَالصُدورُ

    What a terrible, frightening event

    At which breasts and hearts are distraught

  35. وَلِذةُ أَعيُنٍ نامَت وَلَكن

    سَيعقُبُ نَومَها دَمعٌ حَريرُ

    Eyes delighted, but now slumber

    Though tears will follow their rest

  36. بِكُم وَبِسَعيِكُم تُبنى المَعالي

    وَينمي رَوضها الزَّاهي النَضيرُ

    Through you and your efforts, glories are built

    And its blossoming garden thrives and grows

  37. وَظلُّ الدَولةِ العُظمى عَلَينا

    بِإِدراكِ النَّجاحِ لَنا بَشيرُ

    The shadow of the great state is over us

    Success heralds our triumphant woes

  38. فَذَلك فَوق دَوحِ العَدلِ غَيثٌ

    وَذَلِك حَولَ رَوضِ العلمِ سورُ

    That is rain over the plain of justice

    A wall around the garden of knowledge
