1. قِف بي نُحيِّ رُباها أيّها الحادي

    فتلك أبياتها في عدوةِ الوادي

    Stop by the dwelling of our beloved, o messenger

    For those are her verses in the valley's bend

  2. قد خيّمت باللوى الغربيّ ضاربةً

    عليه أطنابها من غير أوتاد

    She pitched her tent on the western hillside

    Spreading its ropes without tent pegs

  3. مقيمةٌ لم تقم إلا على سفَر

    ما ينقضي بين تأويب وإسآد

    Settling down, she only arose for travel

    Between packing up and pitching camp again

  4. تمشي الهويني كما مرّ النسيم ضحى

    في هودجٍ من شعاع النور وقاد

    She walks softly like the morning breeze

    In a carriage of sunlight led by fate

  5. يحجّب البعدُ سيماها فان قربت

    صدّت دلالا فزادت غلّة الصادي

    Distance veils her figure so when close

    She charms, increasing the rider's fervor

  6. يسارق الطرف عين الشمس منظرها

    فالشمس من دونها حلّت بمرصاد

    The glance steals the sun's sight of her

    So the sun without her lurks in ambush

  7. حتى إذا هجعت في ليلها ظفرت

    منها العيون بلمج الميسم البادي

    Until when she slept in her night

    Eyes won a glimpse of her radiant wrist

  8. فنبئينا رعاك اللّهُ جارتنا

    بل انت سوغٌ لنا من عهد ميلاد

    So tell us, may God tend you, of our neighbor

    Nay, you are our warrant since birth

  9. قد انقطعنا فما إن بيننا صلةٌ

    ولا سبيلٌ لملاّح ولا حاد

    For we are cut off, no ties between us

    No way for greetings or tidings

  10. ولم يكن بيننا سدّ وقد ضربت

    أيدي الفضا دون لقيانا بأسداد

    Though no barrier stood, the hands of space

    Blocked our meeting with lattices

  11. ما إن ينالكم للبرق منطلقٌ

    ولا يقرب منكم سير منطاد

    You cannot reach the lightning’s course

    Nor can a scout approach your abode

  12. وإنما رسلنا الأنوار حاكية

    نار الصليب تبدّت فوق أنجاد

    But we send illuminating lights

    Like the cross’ fire risen over pulpits

  13. تهدي لنا عنكم رمزا تعود لكم

    بمثله بين غصدار وإيراد

    To guide a symbol back to you

    Matching it between increase and decrease

  14. يا ليت شعري هل تدرين موضعنا

    وهل لديك رجالٌ اهل أرساد

    Oh would that I knew, are you aware of our place?

    Have you men able for venturing?

  15. وهل رأوا ركبنا النوريّ منطلقا

    في ليلهم بين تصويب وإصعاد

    Did they see our luminous train set forth

    In their night, between aiming and ascending?

  16. وهل أقاموا لنا مثل الذي رفعت

    آباؤُنا لك من تكريم عبّاد

    Did they establish for us what your fathers

    Elevated for you in honor of servants?

  17. فذي هياكلك الشماءُ قد شخصت

    هاماتها في الذرى أمثال أطواد

    Your lofty temples stand erect

    Their pillars fixed in earth like tent poles

  18. رأوك للحسن معبودا وما وهموا

    فالحسن معبود عشاق وزُهّاد

    They saw you beautiful to be worshipped but erred

    For beauty is worshipped by lovers and ascetics

  19. لعلّ للأرض هذا الحظ عندكم

    وإنها لو علمتم دار إفساد

    Perhaps the earth has this fortune with you

    Though had you known it is a land of corruption

  20. وعلّك اليوم خلوٌ من مفاسدها

    وان نكن قد خلقنا خلق أنداد

    You are perhaps empty today of its harms

    Though we were created equal to matches

  21. أنت الفتيّةُ لا تدرين مفسدةً

    أين المفاسد من أخلاق أولاد

    You are innocent, unaware of wickedness

    Where is wickedness from the nature of boys?

  22. ضلّ الجميع وتاهوا في غوايتهم

    فما اهتدى حاضرٌ منهم ولا باد

    All have strayed and wandered in their misguidance

    No settled among them sees right or reaches the goal

  23. وأصبح الزور مرفوع اللواء بهم

    وقائل الحق موصوفاً بإلحاد

    And falsehood's banner is raised high among them

    While truth's speaker is charged with unbelief

  24. قام الخسام بما لا يعملون له

    كنها ولم تره أبصار أشهاد

    Usurpers rise to unlawful works

    Their essence unseen by witnesses' eyes

  25. شغبٌ تفاقم في الأجيال واضطرمت

    به العداوات دهرا بين أكباد

    Strife grew extreme through generations

    And enmities blazed between hearts for ages

  26. أما كفاكم بني الأنسان شقوتكم

    وأنكم للمنايا جدّ وراد

    Has not your evil sufficed, O race of man?

    You are set for death again and again

  27. وما تعانون من جهد الحياة وقد

    أمست كوقرٍ ثقيل فوق أكتاد

    You suffer life's toil though it is

    Like a heavy necklace on your necks

  28. ومن تقلّب أطوار الزمان بكم

    كأنما هو حرباء بأعواد

    You churn through time's phases

    As though it is a spindle in hands

  29. ومن مراغمة الأقدار طاردة

    لكم كتيار يم حول طرّاد

    You wrestle with capricious fate

    Hounding you like a whirlwind

  30. ومن مزاولة الأرزاق بغيتها

    تزاحمون بأقدام وأعضاد

    You jostle for sustenance in its greed

    Crowding with feet and elbows

  31. ومن مكابدة الأدواء صاطية

    ومن نوازل لا تحصى بتعداد

    You endure consuming illnesses

    And uncounted afflictions

  32. فمالكم تسعدون الدهر بعضكم

    لكيد بعض به يا شر إسعاد

    Why then are you joyous, some of you

    Through plotting against others, O worst joy?

  33. فإنما أرضنا دار السلام لمن

    يبغي السلام ودار الحرب للعادي

    Our land is the abode of peace for those

    Who desire peace, and of war for foes

  34. كلنا فوقها رهن الزوال فلا

    أضلّ بعد الكفى من سعي مزداد

    We are all transitory so cease

    Your excess striving after what is enough
