هَذا الغَريبُ الَّذي لاقى المنيَّةَ في

شَرخِ الصِّبا بِقَضاءٍ غَيرِ مَحسوبِ

This stranger who met his death in

The prime of his youth by a fate unforeseen,

مِن آلِ فَيّاضَ مَن فاضَت مَدامِعُهُم

مِن بَعدِهِ بِدَمٍ كَالسَيلِ مَصبوبِ

From the family of Fayyad, whose tears

Poured forth like a flood after he passed.

نَعْيٌ لَهُ في حِمي بَيروتَ قَد عَظُمَتْ

مَناحةً بَينَ تَصفيقٍ وَتَطريبِ

His loss was greatly mourned in Beirut

With clapping and joyous cries.

يَدعو بِبُطرسَ داعِيهِ وَيا لَكِ مِن

مَسافةٍ بَينَ أَرضِ الشّامِ وَالنُوبِ

They called for Boutros, his eulogizer - what a

Distance between the land of Syria and Nubia!

فَقالَ لا تَطمَعوا أَن نَلتَقِي فَأَنا

هُنا مَدى الدَهرِ أَرّخ رَهنُ تَغريبي

So he said, do not hope that we will meet, for I
