أَمسى الثَمانيَ وَالعشرينَ ثُمَ مَضى
وَهَكَذا عادةُ الأَقمار في الدُجَنِ
The twenty-eight waned, then passed away
Thus ever the course of moons in their mansions.
غَريبُ دارٍ مِن الأسكندريةِ قَد
وَلَّى إِلى دارِ عَرشٍ طابَ في السَكَنِ
A stranger I was in the land Alexandria,
But I turned me again to a home wellknown.
فاُتْلُ المَراحِمَ مَع مَن أَرَّخوهُ وَقُل
اليَومَ عادَ غَريبُ الدَّار لِلوَطنِ
Say then, "God's mercy on him who ensconced him!
To-day has the wanderer back to his birthplace gone."
