أجرَّني حبلُ وصلٍ كان منعقدا

حتى إذا احتال منه انحلَّ معقودُ

The rope of connection that was tangled

Until when he schemed from it, the knot unraveled

قد يأخذ اليقظ الأفعى بغفلته

وربما أسكر الدهقان راقونُ

Wakefulness may catch the snake in its neglect

And the uncultured one intoxicates the refined

وناشد الغفل قد يحظى بحاجته

وناشد النبه أعيته الأناشيدُ

And the heedless who appeals may attain his need

While the alert one - the poems exhaust him

أجري الثقاف علىعود ويأطره

شكس جرور حبال الوعد جارودُ

I make the well-rooted camel walk on wood and provoke it

The insurer of promises broke the ropes of commitment, a neighbor

هيهات حسبك لا أنقاد ثانية

قد تمطلنَّ القياد الجمَّح القود

Alas! Enough for you! I will not be led again

The drivers stretched the bridle, the carriage pulled

الحقت واحدة السوأى بثانية

وتلك ثالثةٌ لا عز مجهودُ

I followed one misfortune with another

And that is a third, no mighty effort helped

كم قد نظمت الثريا فيك أقمرها

كأن طائرها في الأذن منقودُ

How much did I string the Pleiades for you, its most beautiful star

As if its bird in the ear is tied

يا أجود الناس ألا في مسامحتي

البخل أجود مما ضيَّع الجود

O most generous of people! Please forgive me

Stinginess is more generous than squandered generosity

أخيّ ما الحسن مودود لذي كرم

وإنما الحسنُ بالإحسان مودودُ

My brother, beauty is not bestowed on the generous

Rather, beauty is bestowed on benevolence

عد لتخلق إن الخلق مجمرة

لولا التخلق لم يسطع بها عود

Go back to moral character, for character is embers

Were it not for character, wood would not shine

هبني تجنبت ألفاً قد تجنبني

كأنما القلب من جنبيه صيخودُ

Love avoided me a thousand times, it might avoid me

As if the heart from its sides is pierced

سئمتُ من سأمي حتى تخيلَ لي

ساعاته البيض هنَّ الأزمن السودُ

I wearied of my weariness until it seemed to me

Its long hours are the black eras

يا حبذا الحب لو تبقى حلاوته

لكنه بالذعاف المرّ مقصود

If only love retained its sweetness

But it is intended with bitter alliage

والحبُّ كالرزق مقسوم ومحتبسٌ

والناس قسمان محرومٌ ومسعودُ

And love is predestined and withheld

And people are two kinds: deprived and fortunate

ولي إلى الحب أقدامٌ وآونة

لي أن دجى الحبُّ أحجام وتعريدُ

And I have feet and a period towards love

For me, when the darkness of love is bodies and contention

ولا أخال العلى ترضى بذاك وذي

حتى تبلغني العز المقاحيدُ

And I do not think the most high would accept that

Until the most noble wars reach me

بحسرةٍ تذرع البيدا بعجرفة

وللركائب اساد وتوخيدُ

With sorrow, the white forearms are covered with pride

And for the ships the anchors and mooring

مأمونة العثر لم ترعد فرائصها

بمأزق فيه قلب الليث رعديدُ

Safe from stumbling, its horses did not tremble

In a impasse where the heart of the lion thunders

أطارحُ الجنَّ أنسا في مطارحها

إذا هتفت أجابتني القراديدُ

I engage with the Jinn jokingly in their dwellings

When they scream, the small birds answer me

مستجمع الجاش لا أهفو بنازلةٍ

ولا أطبتني آراء عباديدُ

With collected ardour, I do not panic at a difficulty

Nor did the opinions of servants heal me

أعلو وأهبط أرضا صفصفا وربىً

وللرواقص تصويبٌ وتصعيدُ

I ascend and descend a land pure and growing

And for the dancers aim and ascent

من كل خرق إلى نهدٍ تقاذف بي

لم تثن عنه عناني النَّهدُ الخود

From every tear to a breast rushing upon me

The tender cheek did not turn away from it

متيمٌ بحزوم الأرض أقطعها

لا من يتيّمه طرف ولا جيد

Infatuated with the districts of earth, I cross them

Not an orphan misses it, neither a neighbor

وشادن أخذت منه المها حوراً

وأغيد أطرقت منه الظبا القيد

I took from Shadan the Maha maidens

And from Aghid the oryx missed the leather tied to its leg

أراه بالعين حسّاً ثم المسها

فلم أجد أثراً والحسُّ موجود

I see it with the eye, felt

But I did not find a trace though feeling exists

ينهلُّ منه الجبين الصلت عن عرقٍ

كأنه لؤلؤ في النحر مبدود

It gushes from it rows of connections from sweat

As if it is a pearl thrown in the throat

يمجُّ بالريق عذباً من مباسمه

كأنه في حشا الإبريق ناجود

It is plentiful with the saliva, fresh from its smile

As if it is the palm fiber in the jug placed high

إذا مشى اهتزَّ من فرع إلى قدم

كأنه غُصُنٌ بالريح مخضود

When it walks it shakes from branch to foot

As if it is a branch stirred by the wind

مرنَّحٌ مرحٌ متسعذبٌ عذبٌ

مخصَّر ناعم الأطراف أملود

Tender, cheerful, sweetened, gentle

Refined, soft in limbs, flexible

وللغزال قميص منه فوَّفهُ

وللغزالة جيب منه مقدود

And for the gazelle it tailored a shirt and pleated it

And for the gazelle it tailored a pocket and stretched it

وللمخلخل ما أخرَّست خلاخله

وللموشح ما تشدو الأغاريد

And for the ankle bracelet - how it silenced its anklets!

And for the girdle what poems the songstresses sing!

مستعرق بمياه الحسن عارضه

قد زان منه بياض الخدِّ توريد

Glistening with the waters of beauty its cheek

As if whiteness of cheek is colored by pores shooting water

يا فاضح البدر من لألاء طلعته

وساتر الوجه أن الوجه مشهود

O you who eclipse the full moon with the radiance of its rising

And veil the face though the face is witnessed

لي منك في حالتي سخطٍ وعين رضا

وعدٌ تقرُّ به عيني وتوعيد

For me from you in my state - anger and pleased eye

A promise your eye settles upon, and a threat

أحبابنا أن يضرَّ القلب بعدكم

فليس ينفعنا قرب وتبعيدُ

Our loved ones - if the heart hurts after you

Then neither closeness or distance benefits us

وأعدتمونا وأخلفتم وعودكم

فما مللنا وملتنا المواعيدُ

And you promised us and were faithful and your promises

So we did not grow bored or tired of promises
