كنَّا نظنُّ بأن تعينا

ظنّاً نصيب به اليقينا

We thought that you would help us,

A thought in which we found certainty.

لم ندر من كان المعين

لنا يكون له معينا

We did not know who would be

The one to help and be helped.

لا تحسب الارزاق سلماً

او تخل حرباً زبونا

Do not think sustenance is a ladder

Or neglect war when it wanes.

والدهر لا ثمن له

ونخاله علقاً ثمينا

Time has no price,

Yet we deemed it precious.

ما شئت فاهج ليالياً

مدح الهجان بها الهجينا

Say what you wish in the nights,

Praising songs made the uncouth graceful.

فاذا ارت حسنا تلته

بعكسه قبحا ترينا

When you see beauty, expect

Its opposite ugliness in its wake.

لم يبق غير اللَه نشكر

صنعه دنياً ودينا

None remains to thank but God

For the world and faith He gave us.
