1. And at a grazing-ground on the valley’s right-hand bend at al-Liwā,

    I let them rest, where the pasture we sought was lush.

  2. I had no purpose there, except that

    a fresh memory of the beloved summoned me.

  3. So I eased the hollow-eyed camels straining at their nose-rings,

    when the journey’s rugged hardship had afflicted them with exhaustion.

  4. For I am a man to whom crossing desert wastes and hills

    is dear—or else a beloved dwells there.

  5. My people make camp in every unknown place,

    however fearsome, even if the stopping-ground is barren.
