يا ليلة بمحاني الحي من اضم

حيتك وطفاء مرخاةً عزاليها

O night that fills me with passion while people sleep,

You came gently, spreading your isolation.

حللت من سفحها والدار حالية

بالربرب العين يطفو في روابيها

You descended from its ridge while the house was emptied

Of murmer that floats in its spaces.

وللرياض اريج في خمائلها

وللنسيم انتشاق في حواشيها

The gardens have a scent in their beauty,

And the breeze has diffusion in its outskirts.

وللاباريق في الاقداح قهقهة

اذا انتشى الحبب الطافي يناغيها

And the cups have in the goblets a chuckle,

When the floating loved one whispers to it.

وغادة مثل قرن الشمس لو سفرت

اخفى سنا البدر ما تبدي تراقيها

Ghada is like the horn of the sun, if she traveled,

She would hide the crescent's radiance that she reveals.

هيفاء مجدولة الكشحين ضامرةٌ

تعنو لحسن معانيها غوانيها

Hayfa has drooping double chins,

She cares for the beauty of her meanings and her talents.

غازلتها ونجوم الليل جانحة

الى المغيب وقد سارت سواريها

I flirted with her while the stars of night leaned

Towards sunset after her necklaces had traveled.

ولا يطيب غبوق لي ومصطبح

الا وأَرتشف الصهباء من فيها

My morning drink is not good unless

I sip the blond one from it.

ابدت لنا ذا برود العسا خصرا

عذب النطاف نطاف الراح صافيها

She showed us the coolness of the staff's waist,

The softness of the gentle wind's gentle blow.

فلست ادري ادرٌّ في مباسمها

ام الثريا بدت تزهو دراريها

So I don't know if the smile on her face

Is the Pleiades that appeared to blossom its seeds.

مضت قصاراً وطالت بعدها نوب

تذوب منها الحشا والعين تذريها

She went quickly and her absence was long,

She melts hearts and eyes that see her.

فكادت النفس تقضي في الضلال هوى

لولا عليٌّ امام الحق هاديها

My soul almost perished in passion

If not for Ali the leader guiding it.

هادٍ اذا ما ارتقى اعواد منبره

مدَّت لترمته الشعرى هواديها

A guide, when he climbs his pulpit,

The Sirius extends its valleys to throw him.

ندبٌ اذا ابتدرت في الجدب تندبه

او لو الخصاصة بالجدوى يلبيها

A caller, if drought seized him in barren lands,

Or even if lack responded to his call.

اغرّ تستمطر العافون من يده

سحائباً يرتدي بالنجح راجيها

He makes clouds rain favour from his hand,

Clouds clad in success he who hopes for it.

ذو عزمة كغرار السيف مردفة

بهمة هامة الجوزا تناجيها

With determination like the sparks of a sword in succession,

With an ambitious ambition like Capricorn's that speaks to it.

يلقى مراس الليالي غير محتفل

طلق المحيا وقد القت مراسيها

He meets the nights of time not celebrating,

With a shiny forehead that has cast its anchor.

يسمو به الشرف الوضاح محتضناً

مجداً يهزُّ به اعطافه تيها

The obvious nobility carries him high,

Embracing a glory that shakes its shoulders around it.

مجداً اذا ما الثريا طاولته علاً

تحدَّرت للثرى تهفو خوافيها

A glory that if the Pleiades reached,

It would fall to the ground yearning for its hidden places.

يا فرع دوحة مجد طاب مغرسها

مذ طاب بالرند والنسرين ناديها

O branch of the date palm of glory, its rootedness is good,

Since it was fragrant with basil and lily its habitats.

واريحياً يوفي الوفد نائلها

براحةٍ سال سيل اليمن واديها

And comfortably does the delegation fulfil its purpose,

With ease the torrents of Yemen flowed through its valley.

خلائق لك لم تبرح تفوح شذىً

ولم تزل نفحات المسك ترويها

Creatures never ceased to diffuse aroma for you,

The breaths of musk never ceased to water it.

احرزت فضلاً وافضالا ومكرمة

فحزت جمَّ مزايا لست احصيها

You have gained virtue and grace and honor,

You have won all the best qualities I cannot count.

علامة العلماء الحبر من خضعت

له الافاضل دانيها وقاصيها

The sign of scholars is the ink that humbled

The gentle and far to you.

قم للعلوم فقرّط اذنها حكماً

تتلى فيسترقص الاسماع تاليها

Rise to science and listen carefully

To be recited, so the hearings would scrutinize the succeeding parts.

وحلِّ ما كان منها عاطلاً بشبا

فكر بمثل مضاء السيف يمضيها

And solve what was invalid of it with the youth,

A mind like the brightness of a sword that runs through it.

هي النجوم وشمس الفضل مطلعها

والبدر وجهك يزهو في نواحيها

It is the stars and the sun is its rise,

And the moon is your face shining in its sights.

والشهب يخفي سناء الشمس طلعتها

فاعجب لشهب سناء الشمس يبديها

And the meteors hide the sun’s radiance when it rises,

So it is strange the meteors show the radiance of the sun.

مهما دجت لا هيل الغي مظلمة

انار صبح المحيا منك داجيها

No matter how dark the ignorance and misguidance,

The morning of your smile illuminated its darkness.

وكلما اثبتت من باطلٍ كذب

في الصحف منك يراع الحق ما حيها

And whenever falsehood established lies in the pages,

The truth that you pastor exposes it.

ورب طاوٍ يكدّ العيس تحسبه

موكلاً بفجاج الارض يطويها

And perhaps a misguided person constantly troubles the people,

Thinking he is assigned to corrupt the earth and fold it.

تخطو على لغبٍ عرض الفلاة به

خوص مناسمها تفلى نواصيها

You walked on the surface of the desert with him,

Khus leaves touch its brink.

تقاذفت فيه والآفاق شاحبةٌ

في البيد زيافة تطوي فيافيها

You were tossed there while the horizons are pale,

In the wilderness, a twisting and turning mirage.

حتى اذا لم يدع فيها السرى مرحاً

القى عصا السيى في مغناك حاديها

Until no joy remains there,

He threw his shepherd’s crook in your resting place guiding it.

فقمت توسعها والثغر مبتسمٌ

عرفا بملثومة يبكي الندى فيها

So you stood expanding it while the mouth smiles,

Knowingly, the dew in it cries.

فقل لمن رام جهلاً ان يباريه

اقصر يداً ويك واعطِ القوس باريها

Tell whoever foolishly tries to compete,

To shorten his hand, bend his bow and make it compete.

يا ابن الأولى رفع الباري لهم رتباً

ترَّفعت صعداً عمن يباريها

O son of the most high, the Creator raised ranks for them,

It ascended difficult paths from those who compete with it.

حبست وديَ الا عنك حيث ارى

للفنس ذلك تهذيباً وتنزيها

I withheld my love except from you when I saw

Adornment for the idols in that.

وبين جنبيَ نفسٌ كلما ظمئت

في المجد بات لبان العز يرويها

And in my self whenever it thirsts

For glory, the milk of honour quenches it.

لا يطَّبيها بُريق خلَّب قدحت

زند السحاب به للعين تمويها

It is not pleased by the glittering goblet,

The sparks of clouds in it dazzle the eye to blind it.

جنبتها زخرف الآمال حيث ارى

من السفاهة بالآمال اغريها

I spared it the ornament of hopes when I saw

How hopes make it foolhardy.

ولست يا ابن ابي العليا اخا أَرب

يميتها الوعد والانجاز يحييها

And I am not, oh son of Abi Ali, a compatible brother

Whom promises kill and fulfilment revives.

هدية ارتجي منك القبول لها

إِن الهدايا على مقدار مهديها

I wish to accept this gift,

Gifts are as per the status of their giver.

وافاك ذا العيد يزهو في تطلعه

ببهجة تملأ الدنيا وما فيها

And this feast came to you shining in its rise

With delight filling the world and what is in it.

يرنو اليك بعيني شادن رشأ

احوى المدامع ساهي العين ساجيها

Looking at you with happy eyes full of joy,

Bearing tears, relaxed eyes pouring them.

والعيد عبدك تنهاه وتأمره

الى أَوامر بالمعروف تنهيها

And your feast is your servant, you end it and order it

To acts of kindness you direct it.

فالبس له جدد الابراد وانضِ به

مخرقات على الاعوام تلقيها

So clad it in new clothes and be gentle with it

Throwing parties over the years receiving them.

واسلم ودم واعط واسعف واستدرَّ حياً

فالسحب عنك غدت تروى غواديها

And greet and shed blood and give and help and attract cordially,

The clouds over you have become watering its valleys.
