1. يسأم الموت ميتة المشروف

    انما الموت مولعٌ بالشريفِ

    Death tires of the death of the drunkard

    Rather, death is enamored of the noble

  2. يتخطَّى الحمام صفّ الذنابي

    عاثراً صرفه بشم الانوفِ

    The pigeons bypass the ranks of flies

    Stumbling, it distracts them with the scent of mouths

  3. ينثني الخطب آنفا عن وضيعٍ

    لذرى السامة الرفيع المنيفِ

    Speech bows, resentful of a mean person

    Of the sublime, elegant, graceful one

  4. طائف طاف لا بانزر صاعٍ

    كائلٌ كال لا بكيلٍ طفيفِ

    A wanderer wandering, not staying in a place

    Speaking without measuring or weighing

  5. مالنا بعد ذا سوى عضّ كفٍّ

    لو كفى بالفقيد عضُّ الكفوفِ

    After this, what do we have left but a handful

    If a handful of hands were enough for the deceased

  6. لا تكلف حمل الرزية قلبي

    ليس من طاقتي ولا تكليفي

    Do not burden my heart with carrying sorrow

    It is not within my capacity or duty

  7. كنت خدني وصاحبي وعقيدي

    واليفي الف الصبا وحليفي

    You were my friend and companion and confidante

    And my intimate friend of youth and ally

  8. هل ربيع وقد رحلت ربيعي

    ام مصيفي وقد نزحت مصيفي

    Is it spring when my spring has departed

    Or my summer when my summer migrated?

  9. ايها المعجل المجدُّ حثيثاً

    بعلاه الى المنون عزوف

    O you who hastens glory impatiently

    To the death that rejects high status

  10. قد وصلت السرى لحيٍّ مجدٍّ

    وتركت السرى لحيٍّ خلوف

    You have reached the lofty glory

    And left behind lowly status

  11. نازحَ الدار عن توحش ربع

    قاصداً أنس مربعٍ مألوفِ

    Departing the house for the desolation of a quarter

    Seeking the familiarity of a known enclosure

  12. ما تسرَّعت عن أناتك الا

    اخترت غنماً تسرع الغطريفِ

    You did not hurry away from me except

    You chose sheep that hurry the shepherd

  13. لم توَّفى نصاب سنّك حتى

    غبت بدراً على الاهلَّة موفي

    You did not complete the term of your years before

    Disappearing like a full moon at its apex

  14. من رمى البدر بالخسوف وثنى

    فرمى الشمس عنوة بكسوف

    Who eclipsed the moon and bent

    Then by force eclipsed the sun

  15. اجلٌ لا يردّ في الفِ فكرٍ

    لابن سينا والف رأي حصيفِ

    A term that cannot be reversed by a legion of thoughts

    Not even for Avicenna and a thousand wise opinions

  16. احرفٌ لفظها البسيط معمىً

    لا ارى قارئاً لتلك الحروف

    Letters whose pronunciation perplexes the simple

    I do not see a reader for those letters

  17. لا يردُّ الحمام في قرع نبلٍ

    او وشيج مقوِّم او سيوف

    The pigeons do not ward off the striking of swords

    Or straight polearms or swords

  18. او دروع زغف لداود حيكت

    او حصون منيعة او كهوف

    Or coats of mail forged for David

    Or fortified citadels or caves

  19. لو حمى المرء نفسه بحصون

    لاحتمى بالغريف ليثُ الغريفِ

    If a man protected himself with fortresses

    The lion of lions would protect itself with its claw

  20. يصرع الفارس المدجّج منَّاً

    وهو شاكي السلاح بين الصفوف

    It fells the heavily armored horseman

    Complaining of weapons amidst the ranks

  21. والمنايا تطوف مستيقظات

    برقودٍ مثل الخيال المطيفِ

    And deaths wandering awake

    At a bivouac like a haunting specter

  22. جادحاتٍ لها عُصارةَ كاسِ

    بنقيع السم الذعاف مدوفِ

    Seething with the quintessence of a cup

    Of lethal poison, stored
