1. قسماً باللوح والقلم

    مالكي افتى بسفك دمي

    I swear by the tablet and the pen

    My angel gave judgment to shed my blood

  2. جلّ من في الحسن صوّره

    فتنة للعُرب والعجم

    He who is most handsome in appearance

    Temptation for both Arabs and non-Arabs

  3. وغرير ضوء غرَّته

    قد حكاها البدر في الظلم

    And the reflection of a light that has deceived him

    The full moon told of it in the darkness

  4. فانعطف يوماً لمرتقبٍ

    كاد أن يقضي من الالم

    So one day he turned to the awaited one

    He almost ended the pain

  5. قصرت عن وكف ادمعه

    معصرات المزن والديم

    His tears were insufficient to express the crushing sorrows

    The presses of grapes and blood

  6. يشتكي من ودّ ذي غنج

    ودُّه كالظل لم يدم

    He complains of the love of the one with gentle voice

    His love is like a fleeting shadow

  7. فتكت فينا لواحظه

    فتكات الصارم الخذم

    So her glances murdered us

    The murderous blows of a sharp sword

  8. افهل يدري غداة نأي

    اودع الاحشاء في ضرم

    Does he know the next morning when I move away

    I entrusted my inner self in agony

  9. سلبَ الارواح راحتها

    رشأٌ في راحتيه دمي

    Depriving the souls of their comfort

    My blood spilt into his comfort

  10. كنتُ ثبت الجاش ذا همم

    لم يدع لي البين من همم

    I was one of strong determination

    Worry left me no determination

  11. ناعس الاجفان صل دنفاً

    ساهر الاجفان لم ينم

    With tired eyelids, he prayed humbly

    With sleepless eyelids, he did not sleep

  12. صل معنَّى القلب مكتئباً

    زدته سقما على سقم

    The core of my heart prayed depressed

    Increasing its illnesses upon illnesses

  13. كيف يصغي العذل ذو أرق

    قلقٌ اذناه في صمم

    How can the sleepless lover listen

    His ears blocked in deafness

  14. يالقومي من لمحتكمٍ

    جائر في الحكم من قدم

    Oh my people, from the injustice

    Of one unfair in his rule from the beginning

  15. رب ذي قرن يلوم فتى

    واذا ما لام لم يلم

    One with horns blames a young man

    And if he blames, he is not blamed

  16. ان يشم من مغرم طمعا

    شابتا قرناه في اللمم

    If he smells greed from a lover

    His horns whiten in covetousness

  17. وبنفسي افتدي عرباً

    نزلوا اكناف ذي سلم

    And I ransom Arabs with my soul

    Who descended under peaceful protection

  18. هب نأوا عن ناظري فلكم

    ضربوا في القلب من خيم

    Go away from my sight for you

    Have struck at the heart from the tents

  19. ليَ قلب ظلّ اثرهم

    بين تلك الكثب والاكم

    For me is a heart imprinted with their traces

    Among those hills and sorrows

  20. حكم الباري بفرقتنا

    ولكم الله من حكم

    The judgment of God dictated our separation

    And for you is God’s judgment
