1. أفضُّ حديث الحب بيني وبينها

    فأنشر ما تطوي عليه الضمائر

    I pour out words of love between us

    And reveal what consciences conceal

  2. تريك محيا يخجل الشمس طلعة

    على ضوئه أضحت تحوم الغدائر

    You see a shining moon ashamed of sunrise

    The planets orbit its glowing light

  3. وترنو على بعدٍ إلي بناظر

    تحدث عنه المرهفات البواترُ

    And from afar yearn towards me with glances

    That set astir the keenest sentiments

  4. وترتاع أحياناً لدى السرى ريبة

    كما ارتاع ظبي من تهامة نافرُ

    At times you start, fearing intimacy’s unease

    As a gazelle startled by a hissing snake

  5. أضاميم أسراب تبكر كالقطا

    فتخطفها منا البزاة البواكرُ

    Clusters of troops that rise early like wildcats

    Seizing them from us, the early risers

  6. نظائر أقمار السماء إذا بدت

    وليس لأقمار السماء نظائر

    Peerless moons when they appear in the sky

    For the moons in the sky have no equals

  7. صحيحات بيضات النهود كواعبٌ

    سوى أنّ أجفانا لهنَّ كواسرُ

    Beauties with the white breasts of gazelles

    Except their eyelids veil them

  8. خفيفات مستنّ الوشاح إذا مشت

    ثقيلات ما التفت عليها المآزرُ

    Lightweight when the wrap clads their walk

    Heavy, not needing sashes’ support

  9. نحيفات ما بين الحشا وهي بدَّن

    ضعيفات رجع الطرف وهي قوادر

    Slender, not thin between puberty and plump

    Delicate, turned back but well-prepared

  10. بلينا بما تبلى المحاجر عنوة

    فمن بعد ما تجني علينا المحاجر

    Softened like chiselled marble perforce

    So after the chisels test us no more

  11. إذا مدّت الأجياد قلن جآذر

    عواطٍ ولكن أين منها الجآذر

    If the steeds raced, they’d say, halt your zeal

    Champing but where are the bridle-rings?

  12. وإن رنّ خلخال اللجين بسوقها

    تجبه نضار بالأكف الأساور

    If the delicate anklet were to ring in the market

    A vigilant guardian would hide it in his grip

  13. غرائب حسن بينهن تعاقد

    على الهجر رودٌ كلهن غرائر

    Wonders of beauty contracted among them

    On estrangement, all tending to estrange

  14. أما ومنىً والركن والبيت ذي الصفا

    وأكرم ما ضمَّ الصفا والمشاعر

    By my vow, and your vow, and Safa’s hill

    And the most hallowed shrine and its precincts

  15. لقد ساغ لي منها على السخط والرضا

    ذعاف نوىً تنقدُّ منه الحناجر

    You have let me taste, in consent or ire

    A drought still fresh enough to sear the throat
