أعجم النطق فاغتنمه غناء

واجتل الوجه روضة غنّاء

Incomprehensible in speech, so take advantage of his singing,

And adorn the face, garden of a singer.

اعجمي يعن للعرب داء

اقتل الداء ما عناك دواء

My incomprehensibility means an affliction for the Arabs,

Kill the affliction, what concerns you is the cure.

فارسي تفرَّس الصدغ منه

وجنة تملأ العيون سناء

Persian who spied the cheek from it,

And a paradise that fills the eyes with bliss.

بي محيا أسنى من النار خدّاً

صبغ الجلنار فيه حياء

In me a lively fire that burned a cheek,

The dyer dyed shyness in it.

ذهبي الخد الأسيل يسيل التب

ر من سبك خده كيمياء

My golden cheek flows easily the drops

That dripped from melting his cheek like alchemy.

قمري إن جال لحظي فيه

ضرج اللحظ كوكبيه دماء

Moon-like, if my glances shone in it

The glances stained it like its planets blood.

وأثيت الجثل المرجل أرخى ال

جعد منه على الصباح مساء

I made the curled curl hang down

The disheveled from it in the morning evening.

باكر اللهو فرصة من حبيب

عاد ضرب الهوى به أهواء

Early playfulness, a chance from a loved one

Who returned, passionate love struck him like winds.

صدح الطير والكؤوس استدارت

ونسيم الخريف رق صفاء

The birds chanted and the cups revolved around,

The autumn breeze gently blew pure air.

املء الكاس لا عدمتك راحا

واسقني الراح خدك اللألاء

Fill the cup lest you miss comfort

And give me comfort, your rosy cheek.

وأدرها من الخدود حميّاً

فهي النار لقبوها الماء

And pass it from the cheeks, hot

For it is the fire, though called water.

بنت بسطام قام فيها ابن كسرى

كاسراً جفن عينه اغضاء

Daughter of Bastam, in whom the son of Chosroes rose up

Breaking the eyelid of his eye out of hatred.

ونديم نادمت في غاس اللي

ل كأني أنادم الجوزاء

And a boon companion I conversed with in the darkness of night

As if I conversed with the brightest star.

قابل الليل صادعاً لدجاه

بذكاء قابلتها حرباء

Meeting the night challenging darkness

I met it cleverly like a skillful warrior.

وجلا الصبح في ذبالة خد

شعشع الأفق بالشعاع جلاء

And the dawn shone in the darkness of a cheek

The horizon glittered with rays clearly.

يعجم اللفظ باندماجة نطق

لغط ورقاء طارحت ورقاء

Speech becomes confused by the blending of pronunciation

Mumbling and murmuring it threw away papers.

نغمات الناقوس أو بغمات الس

ساغب الخشف حين يرعى الكباء

Like the tones of a bell or the groans of

A complainer when he herds sheep.

جرد اللحظ أبياَ مشرقيّاً

وثنى العطف لدنة سمراء

The glance stripped bare, shining,

And the charm bent, gentle, brown.

جاعل في القناة لين استواء

جاعل في سراة صلبي انحناء

Making the canal soft and level,

Making the plateau hard and bent.

واقف باعتدال قد رشيق

موقف فيه ضلعي العوجاء

Standing upright, proportionate,

A stance in which my crooked ribs bowed.

النجاء النجاء من سل سيف ال

فتح إن سله النجاء النجاء

Salvation, salvation from drawing the sword of

Victory, if drawn, is salvation, salvation.

والفناء الفناء من هز رمح ال

قدان هزه الفناء الفناء

And annihilation, annihilation from shaking the spear of

Stabbing, if shaken, is annihilation, annihilation.

لابس بردة الجمال قباء

نازع بردة الجميل رداء

Wearing the robe of beauty, a cloak

Competing with the robe of beauty, a gown.

ليس بالبدع إن أمت فيه حيّاً

ما على الصب إن يموت عناء

It would not be novel if I lived happily in it

It is not strange for youth to die of bliss.
