حبيب لقلبي ما أقام حبيب

علقت به والعاشقون ضروب

My heart's beloved did not stay, a beloved

I clung to him while lovers are of kinds

إلى الجانب الغربي من نحو أرضه

تهبُّ بأشواقي صباً وجنوب

Towards the west side of his land I yearn

With passion blowing north wind and south

فمن ليَ أن ألقاه والوجه ضاحك

ووجه عذولي قد زواه قطوب

So who can I meet with a smiling face

While my bashful face frowned with grief

ولم الزمنَّ الدمع عيناً كليلة

تغالب خيل الدمع وهو غلوب

Why did time make my eyes teary

As tears battle and defeat is sure

إذا لم تكن فالعيش ليس بطيب

بلى كل شيءٍ في لقاك يطيب

If you are not here living loses joy

Rather everything with meeting you thrives

وليس غريب أن أبثك لوعة

ولكن كتمان المحب غريب

It's no surprise I tell you my agony

But a lover hiding his love is strange

وقد كان لي قلب جليد على الهوى

وصدر إذا ضاق الخناق رحيب

My heart once was icy to passion

My chest when distressed was always wide

فمالك يا ظبي الصريمة نافر

كأني إذا ما رمت وصلك ذيب

So why my shy gazelle are you so aloof

As if I when I aim to join you melt away
