1. أحبيب أنت إلى الحسين حبيب

    إن لم ينط نسب فأنت نسيب

    O beloved, you are dear to al-Husayn, O beloved

    If lineage does not connect us, you are still a relative

  2. يا مرحباً بابن المظاهر بالولا

    لو كان ينهض بالولا الترحيب

    O welcome, son of glorious deeds, O guardian

    If the guardian had risen to protect, what a welcome it would have been

  3. شأن يشق على الضراح مرامه

    بعداً وقبرك والضريح قريب

    It was difficult for the young men to achieve their goal

    After you - may your grave and tomb be near

  4. قد أخلصت طرفي علاك نجيبة

    من قومها وأب أغر نجيب

    My eyes have been loyal to you, O noble one

    From her people and a noble father

  5. بأبي المفدّي نفسه عن رغبة

    لم يدعه الترهيب والترغيب

    By my father who sacrificed himself out of desire

    Neither intimidation nor enticement made him deviate

  6. ما زاغ قلباً من صفوف أمية

    يوم استطارت للرجال قلوب

    No heart wavered from the ranks of the Umayyads

    When hearts took flight for the men

  7. يا حاملاً ذاك اللواء مرفرفا

    كيف التوى ذاك اللوى المضروب

    O bearer of that fluttering banner

    How twisted is that battered standard

  8. للَه من علم هوى وبكفه

    علم الحسين الخافق المنصوب

    By God, he knew love in his grasp

    Al-Husayn knew the fluttering heart was hoisted

  9. أبني المواطر بالأسنة رعَّفا

    في حيث لا برق السيوف خلوب

    My sons died defending with tongues as weapons

    Where there is no flashing of swords

  10. غالبتم نفرا بضفة نينوي

    فغلبتم والغالب المغلوب

    You overpowered an army on the bank of the Euphrates

    So you overpowered while the victor was overpowered

  11. شكت الطفوف طفيفها فأكالها

    بكم أبي الضيم وهو غريب

    The infants complained of their weakness, so

    With you, the protector of the oppressed, even when a stranger

  12. ما منكم إلّا ابن أمّ للردى

    ليث أكول للعدى وشروب

    None of you but the son of a mother inclined to evil

    A ferocious lion, ravenous to enemies and drinking their blood

  13. كنتم قواعد للهدى ما هدَّها

    ليل الضلال الحالك الغربيب

    You were pillars of guidance, but the nights of misguidance destroyed them

    The deceitful, deadly, confusing night

  14. شاب وأشيب يستهل بوجهه

    قمر السما والكوكب المشبوب

    A youth and an elderly man water their faces with blood

    The moon of the sky and the overthrown planet

  15. لولا فخامة شيبهم وشبابهم

    شرفا لرق بهم لي التشبيب

    Were it not for the dignity of their elderly and youth

    Their nobility would have been too delicate for me in my youth

  16. فزهيرها طلق الجبين وبعده

    وهب ولكن للحياة وهوب

    So Zuhayr, bare-headed and after him

    Wahab, but he yearned for life and shrank back

  17. وهلالها في الروع وابن شبيبها

    وبريرها المتنمر المذروب

    And its crescent moon in terror, and the son of Shabib

    And its ferocious lion Habib who was banished

  18. والليث مسلمها ابن عوسجة الذي

    سلم الحتوف وللحروب حريب

    And its Muslim, the son of Owsja who

    Handed over the reins and was up for the wars

  19. آساد ملحمة وسمّ أساود

    وشواظ برق صوارم ولهيب

    The resolute heroes, branded with heroism

    And lightning swords, gleaming blades and flames

  20. الراكبين الهول لم ينكب بهم

    وهن ولا سأم ولا تنكيب

    The fearsome riders were not slowed by them

    Weakness, boredom or defeat

  21. والمالكين على المكاشح نفسه

    والعاتقين النفس حين تؤوب

    Those who competed on the battlefield themselves

    And hugged death when it came

  22. والمصدرين من المغيرة خيلها

    والخيل شوط مغارها التخبيب

    Those who lunged with their mares

    And the mares' galloping strides incited them

  23. متابعدات في الغوار نوازع

    ألوى بها الأساد والتقريب

    Wide apart in the dust, pulling the reins

    The lions twisted and turned them

  24. قوم إذا سمعوا الدروع كأنهم

    تحت الجواشن يذبل وعسيب

    A people who, when they heard the clash of arms, it was as if

    Beneath armor, they withered and became feeble

  25. أو أنهم في السابقات أرقم ال

    وادي يباكرها الندى فتسيب

    As if in the first ranks, the sand grouse does not

    Drink the dew in the valley and fly away

  26. ساموا العدى ضرباً وطعناً فيهما

    غنيّ الحسام وهلهل الأنبوب

    They made the enemies taste striking and stabbing

    The swords clashed and the spears penetrated

  27. من كل وضاح الجبين مغامر

    ضرباً وللبيض الرقاق ضريب

    Every bare-headed risk taker

    Struck and ripped the slender white banners

  28. متخبب ذملا يحفز مهره

    خببا وآخر خلفه مخبوب

    A prowling lion spurring its steed

    Galloping, and another behind him bent over

  29. ومحبب لهوى النفوس محكم

    فيها كما يتحكم المحبوب

    One who loved the souls of the people firmly

    Controlled them as the beloved controls

  30. إن ضاق وافي الدرع منه بمنكب

    ضخم فصدر العزم منه رحيب

    If the armor became too tight around his broad shoulders

    His resolute chest was still expansive

  31. ما لان مغمز عوده ولربما

    يتقصف الخطي وهو صليب

    The supple rod never bent

    And sometimes the slender one prostrates like a cross

  32. ومعمم بالسيف معتصب به

    واليوم يوم بالطفوف عصيب

    Turbaned by the sword, masked by it

    And today is an arduous day for the youth

  33. ما زال منصلتاً يذب بسيفه

    نمراً وأين من الأزلّ الذيب

    He continuously slaughtered with his sword

    A tiger, and where is the lifelong wolf from?

  34. تلقاه في أولي الجياد مغامرا

    وسواه في أخرى الجياد هيوب

    He met him in the first rank, venturing

    And made him equal in the last rank, howling

  35. يلقى الكتيبة وهو طلق المجتلي

    جذلان يبسم والحمام قطوب

    He met the battalion while bareheaded

    Smiling, while the doves were cooing

  36. طرب المسامع في الوغى لكنه

    بصليل قرع المشرفي طروب

    The clashing of weapons delighted the ears

    But it was the ringing of spears that was harmony

  37. واهاً بني الكرام الأولى كم فيكم

    ندب هوى وبصفحتيه ندوب

    Oh nobility, how much yearning and

    Scars of love are in you, and scars on my cheeks

  38. أبكيكم ولكم بقلبي قرحة

    أبدا وجرح في الفؤاد رغيب

    I cry for you, and you have a wound

    In my heart forever that causes pain

  39. ومدامع فوق الخدود تذبذبت

    أراطها وحشاً تكاد تذوب

    Tears flowed down my cheeks

    I held them back, about to melt

  40. حنَّ الفؤاد إليك فتعلمت

    منه الحنين الرازحات النيب

    My heart yearned for you, so it learned

    From it the sighs, the moaning of distress

  41. تهفو القلوب صوادياً لقبوركم

    فكأن هاتيك القبور قليب

    Hearts wander like torrents to your graves

    As if those graves are my heart

  42. قربت ضرائحكم على زوارها

    ومزورها للزائرين مجيب

    Your tombs have drawn their visitors near

    And respond to those who visit them

  43. وزكت نفوسكم فطاب أريجها

    في حيث نشر المسك فيه يطيب

    Your souls have become fragrant so their scent is pleasing

    Where the musk is spread and makes it fragrant

  44. جرَّ عليكم عبرتي هدّابها

    فجرى عليكم دمعيَ المسكوب

    My crying dragged its train over you all

    So my copious tears flowed over you

  45. بكرت إليكم نفحة غروية

    وسرت عليكم شمأل وجنوب

    A breeze of passion blew over you

    And a warm southern wind passed over you
