1. رأيت الدهر كيف غدايرينا

    على العدوى له الداء الدفينا

    I saw time turn against me

    With contagious disease it concealed its malice

  2. اسرَّ ضغونه حتى اذا ما

    تنمر واثباً بثَّ الضغونا

    Until it suddenly pounced

    Spreading its malice

  3. تعيفت السراة الطير فيه

    بوارح تفزع الاجد الامونا

    The birds on its branches grew frail

    With claws that startle the gentle and peaceful

  4. نعى ناعيك مكة والمصلى

    وزمزم والمواقف والحجونا

    Mecca eulogized you, and the Mosque

    And Zamzam, the stations, and the throngs

  5. نعى الناعي لك الجيد المحلى

    تعطل منك والعقد الثمينا

    The eulogizer lamented your beautiful neck

    Now disabled, and the precious necklace

  6. نعى الناعي قوامك خيزرانا

    حقرت اذا تثنى الياسمينا

    The eulogizer lamented your tapered waist

    Belittled when the jasmine bends

  7. نعى الناعي خدوداً ام قدودا

    تقصفها يد النكبا غصونا

    The eulogizer lamented cheeks or full moons

    Whose blooms are severed by the hand of affliction

  8. وما اقسى ضمائرنا عليه

    وقد رَّقت وكان ارقُّ لينا

    How harsh were our souls toward him

    When he was gentle and most tender to me

  9. أئنُّ اذا ذكرت له انيناً

    ومن لي ان يعيد لي الانينا

    Whenever I moaned his memory

    My hearing grew deaf to any melody

  10. نوى ظعناً واقسم لو توانى

    حلقت به واوقفت الظعونا

    He intended harm and swore if he delayed

    I would join him and halt the harm

  11. احنُّ وترزم الانضاء فيه

    روازحها فتوسعها حنينا

    Yearning lodges in my throat

    Her young sobbing and moaning

  12. حدا الحادي بها للبين سوقا

    عنيفاً كاد ينزعها الوضينا

    The one who parted us drove her roughly

    Nearly tearing her from my core

  13. فطارت تنبري عنقاً فيا من

    يشدُّ بانفها الحلق البرينا

    She flew stretching her neck, so one

    Who holds the nose rope firmly

  14. ولم تعلق بها الابصار حتى

    تخال يقين اعضدها ظنونا

    Eyes could not look at her until

    They thought her neck columns supported her

  15. اذا خوَّت بجنب القاع كوماً

    تعيد سهول معظمها حزونا

    When she nestled beside the desert, a heap

    Her smoothness restored the desolate hills

  16. فكاد السير يمشقها حروفا

    مرتلة ونقرأها لحونا

    The journey nearly marked her with letters

    Chanted, and we would read verses in her

  17. ركائب غير أن سبحت يداها

    ببحر الآل تحسبها سفينا

    Ships though her hands sailed

    A sea they thought her a boat

  18. من البلد المخوف تقلُّ ركباً

    عليها تقصد البلد الامينا

    From the feared town she carried a rider

    Toward the safe town she headed

  19. ومشتملين بيض الريط لاثوا

    رداء النسك ليس بمحرمينا

    Bearing the holy place clothed in white garb

    Not on pilgrimage, in religious dress

  20. يزّجون المطي بلا لغوب

    لبيت فيه غير مقصرينا

    They roamed where the skilled never prodded them

    Toward beds, intending to rest

  21. سروا في حيث لم تخدِ المهارى

    بهم نحو المضاجع مزمعينا

    A guide lights their path

    When lost he illuminates so they are guided

  22. يسير على الرقاب لهم دليل

    اذا ضلُّوا يضيء فيهتدونا

    Bearing sanctity on their necks, angels

    Covering them, carrying

  23. ومحتمل على الاعناق قدساً

    تحفُّ به الملائك حاملينا

    His coffin sailed, signs

    Guiding us clearly

  24. سرت بسريره للقبر آيا

    تشيع منه فرقانا مبينا

    They buried verses and hidden mysteries

    Safeguarded with him in the soil

  25. لقد دفنوا به سور المثاني

    من التنزيل والسر المصونا

    And laid down a pillar and sword

  26. وواروا بالثرى اسلاً مقاما

    واسيافا يقمن وينحنينا

    That rises and bows

    O how you took his tongue from me

  27. فيا لدنا نزعت له لسانا

    ويا عضباً فجعت به القيونا

    And O grief, you made me despair

    We missed the right path, but by the Guide

  28. رمينا عن ضلال غير أنا

    بمهدي لنا غرضا رمينا

    We missed our purpose

    O pillar, you strengthened a pillar in me

  29. فيا ركنا به عليَّت ركناً

    ويا حصناً هدمت به الحصونا

    O fortress, with him you destroyed fortresses

    I lost you, one tribe, as if

  30. فقدتك واحداً لي في قبيل

    كأني قد فقدت العالمينا

    I lost all people

    I remembered you though mourning deafened me

  31. ذكرتك والنعي اصمَّ سمعي

    فلم اسمع لثاكلة رنينا

    No longer heeding a companion's melody

    I remembered you, the land intends

  32. ذكرتك والبلاد نوىً شطونٌ

    عشية قد نويت نوى شطونا

    Harm at night as I intend harm

    Looking between my breast and heart

  33. تطلَّع بين حيزومي وقلبي

    اواراً لا اطيق له كمونا

    Hidden, unbearable to me

    Give me a glance quickly or else

  34. اعرني نظرة عجلاً والا

    فانَّ العين طامحة جفونا

    My eye is expectant, eyelid lowered

    Restore your face to my eye unveiled

  35. اعد وجهاً لعيني منك طلقا

    اقبِّل بين عينيه الجبينا

    Let me kiss the space between your eyes

    No son, though daughters excuse me, how

  36. أبن لا بنت معذرة وأنَّى

    وعهدي انَّ عهدك لن يبينا

    When your pact with me will not be clear

    I snatched you from me, a precious hostage

  37. غصبتك من يدي علقا نفيسا

    على رغمي وكنت بك الضنينا

    Though against my will, you were dear to me

    I never thought I was so ungenerous

  38. وما ظني اجود بك اغتصابا

    ولكن خيّب الاجل الظنونا

    But fate disappointed assumptions

    A youth pure of lineage

  39. فتى وشجت عروق الرسل فيه

    وآدم لم يكن ماء وطينا

    Though Adam was not water and clay

    Brother of short lineage, but long in glory

  40. اخو النسب القصير وطال مجداً

    فضمَّ ذؤابة الحسبين فينا

    Thus he combined the two pedigrees

    He shone a pedigree whose sides

  41. نضا حسباً تصرَّح جانباه

    كماء المزن منسكبا معينا

    Poured like freely flowing springs

    When forbearance's pebbles overflowed from him

  42. اذا طفحت حصاة الحلم منه

    بها قرع الهجائن والهجينا

    He rang the ignorant and the dim of sight

    He returned the hidden linings of sleeves

  43. يئدُّ مظاهر الادراع منه

    مضمَّرة الحشا قبّاً بطونا

    Folded, hidden garments

    He flowed like the winds in generosity

  44. جرى مجرى الرياح بشوط فضل

    يبزُّ به المسومة الصفونا

    Vanquishing the sheathed swords

    A people swore by his generocity

  45. تبتّ به لعمر الجود قوم

    على سرف النوال معوَّدونا

    Habituated to lavish bestowal

    Those who catch knowledge fish for him

  46. وتعزيه لبحر العلم صيدٌ

    بمستنّ العلوم مدربونا

    Trained in the tools of science

    If counted, each an army

  47. اذا عُدُّ وافهم نفر فرادى

    وان يعدوا حسبتهم مئينا

    Though counted, seeming two hundred

    If they slaughtered villages in a day

  48. وان نحروا بيوم قرىً اطاروا

    عراقيب المطافل عاقرينا

    They left the eyelids of swords bare

    How many prisoners did they free at Badr

  49. فكم فكُّوا من الأسرى ببدرٍ

    قيوداً بعد ما غلقت رهونا

    After shackles had locked wrists

    Most honored of all people, a tribe

  50. اعز الناس كلهم قبيلاً

    لها تعنو القبائل اجمعونا

    All tribes together call them eminent

    When the small spoke for them

  51. اذا عقد النطاق لهم صغيرٌ

    تظل له الأكابر صاغرينا

    The great remained humble

    Whatever I forget, I won't forget a cousin

  52. ومهما أنسى لم انس ابن عمٍّ

    يذكرني العمومة إن نسينا

    Who reminds me of kinship if I forget

    If our souls grew turbulent, we returned

  53. اذا اضطربت ضمائرنا رجعنا

    الى القربى نكلفها السكونا

    To kin, asking them for calm

    We supported each other, inclining

  54. شددنا ازرنا فينا لوانا

    الى الصفح الجميل معاً دعينا

    Together toward beautiful reconciliation

    He journeyed, taking his worldly goods alive

  55. ترَّحل محرزاً دنياه حياً

    واحرز ميتاً اخراه دينا

    And dead, his faith held the reins

    No shame if an eye glanced

  56. فليس غضاضة ان غضَّ طرفا

    وفاز بقاصرات الطرف عينا

    And won the eyes' virginity

    So do not grieve, father of Al-Mahdi, consider

  57. فلا تجزع ابا المهديّ وانظر

    الى امم مضوا امماً قرونا

    Nations who passed, ages past

    You performed Hajj, he alighted at the Mount

  58. حجاك فقد رسا طوداً وانَّى

    تهز الريح طود حجى رزينا

    How can the wind shake a sturdy mount?

    Does fate divert but a torrent

  59. وهل صرف الردى الا غريمٌ

    يطالبنا بانفسنا ديونا

    To claim our souls its debts

    The Zawra’ gave her visitor a cloud

  60. سقى الزوراء زائرها سحاب

    من الغفران منبعث هتونا

    Forgiveness pouring gentleness
