1. عليك بملعب الرشأ الربيب

    وصد النفس عن مغنى لعوب

    Seek out the meadows of soft grass,

    And restrain yourself from childish play,

  2. وما قولي وقد ذهبت شعاعاً

    يا نفس اذهبي جزعاً وذوبي

    And though my words have faded like rays of light,

    Oh soul, go grieving and melt away.

  3. وجيران بجنب منىً سقاهم

    بصبه رباب حيا سكوب

    While my neighbors, whom bounty has watered,

    Were revived by a sip of the cupbearer.

  4. مضى عصر الشباب الطلق نهباً

    بأسرهم وذا عصر المشيب

    The free time of youth has passed as plunder,

    With its people, and now it's the era of old age.

  5. تذب عن اللما المعسول منهم

    لحاظ جآذر بلحاظ ذيب

    The gazes that drip honey have avoided me,

    While the looks of the censurers scorch like flame.

  6. أيا ريم الأجيرع حبذا لو

    بقلبي ترتعي حب القلوب

    O doe-eyed one, how I wish

    That you would graze in my heart upon love.

  7. وترعي الطرف زهر أريض روض

    بمرعى فوق خدك غير موبي

    And you would graze your eye upon a flower of tender meadow

    In a pasture above your cheek that knows no misconduct.

  8. أحبك ما بدت في الأفق شمس

    ومال أخو الغزالة للمغيب

    I loved you since the sun rose on the horizon,

    And the deer’s brother inclined toward sunset.

  9. أحلئ عن ورودك ثم أدنوا

    دنو الطير حام على قليب

    Draw near to your roses, then come close

    As a bird in love hovering over its nest.

  10. حناناً كم قرعت عليك نابا

    وكم رحلت يوم نواك نيبي

    How often have I knocked insistently upon you

    And how often on the day you turned away did I hobble away!

  11. غداة قطيع رمل الجزع صفحا

    تنافر قاطعاً رمل الكثيب

    On a morning when the sands of grief parted ways

    Breaking off from the sands of the dune.

  12. واعفر من ظباء القاع خشف

    يشير إليَّ بالعنم الرطيب

    More yellow than the beasts of the wasteland

    It beckoned to me with its moist tuft.

  13. ترصد رقدة الرقباء حتى

    ذا ما هومت عين الرقيب

    I lay in wait for the slumber of the heads

    Until the watcher’s eye dozed off.

  14. أتى والليل رطب الذيل يمشي

    على وجل بمهزوز قضيب

    And the night came, its tail dripping wet, walking

    Hesitantly, on tiptoe with tottering staff.

  15. والوى الجيد تذرف مقلتاه

    وحيا بالخضيب وبالشنيب

    It bent its neck shedding its tears

    Lamenting with whimpers and moans.

  16. فقمت إليه أرشف منه ريقاً

    ألذَّ من المدامة للشروب

    So I stood, more wakeful than it, to take a sip

    Sweeter than wine for drinking.

  17. وبتنا حيث لا عين ترانا ال

    عشية غير معقوص السبيب

    And we stayed where no eye could see us

    Except for the morning breeze blowing from the south.

  18. بليل لا نراقب فيه إلا

    نسيم الصبح هب من الجنوب

    It conversed with me, and I was distracted

    From it by the false dawn.

  19. يصادقني الحديث به وألهو

    أموه عنه بالفجر الكذوب

    Until its eyebrow rose like the sun,

    And the star turned its wing toward setting.

  20. إلى أن لاح حاجبه طلوعاً

    ومال النجم يجنح للغروب

    Then I stood to bid farewell, stroking

    A branch that the cold night had withered.

  21. فقمت مودّعاً أملود غصن

    سرى بمسيَّر البرد القشيب

    And I returned alive, nothing clinging to my chill

    Except a fragrance clinging to my clothes.

  22. وجئت الحي لم تعلق برودي

    سوى عبق تعلق بالجيوب
