1. ألا أي يوم جدَّ فيه ابن أحمد

    ترى ما به أيدي الجياد الضوامر

    Behold! What day did the son of Ahmad prepare

    Where the hands of fierce horses can be seen?

  2. ليوم أراش الكفر منه مهاضةً

    فكان على الإسلام أشأم طائرِ

    A day that turned the faces of disbelief pale

    And was an ill omen for Islam's bird

  3. وخُيِّر ما بين اثنتين وقد زكت

    نقيبة طلاع إلى العز ثائرِ

    He was given a choice between two pure paths

    A rising star reaching for glory

  4. فجنبها عن خطة الضيم وانتضى

    عزيمته واختار قرع البواترِ

    He turned away from the path of oppression

    His determination resolved, and he chose to face adversity

  5. وأنى لها أن يركب الذل ضارعاً

    أبي أبى إلّا فروع المنابرِ

    How could he ride the waves of humiliation

    When he refused all but the pulpits' branches?

  6. فأهوى إليها يشمل بغلمة

    تخوض ببحرٍ من دم الشوس زاخرِ

    He lunged at it, leading a band

    That swam in a sea of the brave's blood

  7. فمن كل قاني البرد أبيض ماجداً

    يتوَّج في الهيجاء زرق المغافرِ

    You see every gatherer of the cold steel glorified

    Crowned with the blue of the armor

  8. إذا ما سطا أعطى المهند حقه

    واضمر للعسال عطّ الضمائرِ

    When he drew his sword, he gave the polished blade its due

    And harbored good will for the valiant in his soul

  9. فللَه في فتيان صدقٍ توازروا

    لنصر ابن طه قبل شدِّ الميازر

    To the loyal youth who supported

    The son of Taha before the tightening of belts

  10. إذا انتدبوا تحت العجاج تطالعت

    فوارسهم تهفو بشعث الغدائرِ

    When they were called under the standard, their horsemen appeared

    Galloping in the disheveled remains of the departed

  11. رجال إذا اشتدَّ الضراب رأيتها

    تشدُّ كأمثال النسور الكواسرِ

    Men whom when the striking intensified you saw

    Swooping like predatory eagles

  12. وإن هي أمَّت معرك الحرب ثلّمت

    حدود المواضي في نحور القساورِ

    And if the battle provoked them, their onslaught

    Would breach the bounds of the cooking pots in the necks of the leaders

  13. يغوص بها الضربُ الدراك فتلتوي

    تلوَّي مكمور الحشا والخواصر

    The clubs strike them, but they coil and twist

    Like the twisting of a firmly braided tether

  14. إلى أن تهاوت بالقنا الملد بعدما

    أطنَّت أنابيب القنا المتشاجرِ

    Until the fortified citadel collapsed after

    The intertwined tubes of the cannons clashed

  15. فتلك بجنب الطف أضحت جسومهم

    عواري لو لم ترتدِ بالمفاخرِ

    So next to the baby their bodies became

    Bare and naked, had they not been covered in pride

  16. تروح عليها الصافنات وتغتدي

    برض القوى منها بوطء الحوافرِ

    The biers would parade over them as they slept

    And the hooves would trample their mighty corpses

  17. وتشرق في أوج العواسل منهم

    وجوه كأمثال النجوم الزواهرِ

    And in the thick of the melee their faces shone

    Like brilliant glittering stars

  18. ولهفي لربات الخدور وقد بدت

    سوافر تدعو بالليوث الخوادرِ

    My longing for the ladies of the veiled tents who called

    For the brave lions to attend to them

  19. بني غالب يا خير من عرَّقت بهم

    مناجيب فهرٍ كابراً بعد كابرِ

    O clan of Ghalib, the best clan that ever

    Saddled a refractory camel after a refractory camel

  20. رقدتم وهبَّت في الطفوف أمية

    تجرُّ علينا جائحات الجرائر

    You rested, and Umayyad sprang up in ambush

    And dragged upon us the calamities of ruin

  21. قضت وترها منكم على القلب وانبرت

    تقنعنا عن قلب حرّان واتر

    They cut their bowstring from you to our hearts and turned

    To make us forget our burning, wounded hearts

  22. تشج بقضب الهند منكم حناجراً

    وقد كنتم منها شجىً في الحناجر

    They provoked from you with an Indian cane throats

    While you had been provocation in their throats

  23. تجشم فينا بطن كل مفازة

    وتقطع فينا ظهر أقتم غابرِ

    They condemn us to traverse every rough terrain

    And cross the back of every gloomy ruin

  24. ترامى بنا أيدي المطي سواغباً

    تشقُّ بنا في السير قلب الهواجرِ

    With us they cast the hands of far-striding horses

    Tearing through us the heart of the desolate plains

  25. تحنُّ وقد أورى المصاب فؤادها

    حنين هوامي العيس عبرى النواظرِ

    They sing mournfully, though grief has blinded them

    With the yearning of she-camels bereft of their young
