    From you, breaths ascend and descend

    With directing, and heartache

  3. هل فراخ الهام قد طارت به

    لا يقرُّ القلب او يفرخ روع

    Did the thoughts take flight with it

    The heart settles not, nor hatches fear

  4. كلما اطوى الجو يزداد نشراً

    كيف لو انشر ما تطوي الضلوع

    The more I fold the atmosphere, the more it spreads

    How so if I spread what ribs enfold

  5. يا بنفسي بالرياض الحوِّ ذا

    غيدٍ يستن والروض مريع

    O my soul, roam the loved meadows

    Where gazelles graze, and the garden flourishes

  6. وبذاك الربرب العين طلىً

    طامح العين الى الركب مروع

    And that pheasant, roving of eye

    An eye coveting the caravan, alarmed

  7. يا اخا الظبية ختلا ونفاراً

    لا عدا مربعك الغيث الهموع

    O brother of the doe, secluded and aloof

    No harm to your square from pouring rains

  8. يا غزالاً بثنايا توضح

    ان يشطُّ الورد والمرعى شسوع

    O gazelle in thickets appearing

    When the roses bloom and pasture turns lush

  9. لك من مهجتي الحرى ومن

    عيني العبرى مصيف وربيع

    You have from my essence the heat, and from

    My eyes the tears, a summer and spring

  10. لك من احناء اضلاعي ندوبٌ

    رشحٌ قيحا وفي قلبي صدوع

    For you are from my ribcage wounds

    An oozing abscess, and in my heart there are cracks

  11. تحمل الشمأل طيباً لك منه

    في حواشي ريطة الليل ردوع

    The north wind brings you a sweet scent

    In the margins of the night guard's cloak

  12. ضلة تحمل بالسيف صنيعا

    لحظك السيف فما السيف الصنيع

    A stray that carries with the sword a making

    Your glance marked the sword, so what can the sword make?

  13. اين من معناك معنى بدرنا

    هكذا يختلف الحسن البديع

    Where is our meaning from your perfect meaning?

    Thus differs beauty, however ingenious.

  14. ليَ من معقوصك الجعد سفوع

    حين تبدو ومن الخد نصوع

    For me are your curly tresses tumbling

    When you appear, and your cheekbone carved

  15. كم لياليٍ قصرت فيك منى

    ولفود الليل قد طالت فروعُ

    How many nights I wished in you were short

    Yet the night's tents stretched far

  16. قد شربنا الخمر من فيك وعفنا

    فعمة الكاس وللكاس شروعُ

    We drank wine from you and wavered

    Lost in the cup, though the cup overflows

  17. كم خليع جرع الحب أذىً

    ما لقي في حبك النضو الخليع

    How many disgraceful tasted love's harm

    Not finding in your love the gentle, noble way
