1. بعثت اليكم بالزفير رسائلا

    وبالدمع منهلاً عزاليه سائلا

    I sent you messages with my sighs

    And with my tears an abundant spring imploring

  2. أَأحبابنا إن الدموع التي جرت

    جرت رسلاً ما بيننا ورسائلا

    Oh beloveds, indeed the tears that flowed

    Were messengers between us and missives

  3. لعمر النوى لم تدرِ طارقة النوى

    لقد عركت مني جرانا وكاهلا

    By the life of my desire, the knocking of passion didn’t know

    That it had rubbed my sides and shoulders raw

  4. عشية شيعت الخدود وذائلاً

    على العيس تسري والقدود ذوابلا

    One evening I bade farewell to my cheeks and tresses

    Gliding over the staff, my knots undone

  5. كأن افلتتني ظبية مشرئبةٌ

    تلوع وودعت الغزال المغازلا

    As if an untamed gazelle had escaped me

    Yearning, bidding farewell to the flirting gazelle

  6. وسارقني اللحظ المريب ابن غزلة

    ختولٍ رعى وسط الخميلة جائلا

    And the sly glance stole me, son of a flirt

    Grazing negligently amidst the meadow

  7. وساقت لي الموت الزؤام مروعة

    باسوقةٍ نعمٍ ملأن الخلاخلا

    And death brought me its fearful, horrifying decrees

    With a procession of favors that filled the anklets

  8. على حين اعطيت العواذل طاعتي

    وولهت حتى صرت أهوى العواذلا

    While I had given my obedience to the maidens

    And became bewildered until I loved the maidens

  9. اسلمان إن القلب ليس بسالمٍ

    لديَّ لكم حتى ايمم بابلا

    My friends, the heart cannot be safe

    For you I have no tranquility until I reach ruin

  10. فيا لا عدا الفيحاء رشُّ نوافح

    من الزمن تسقي ارضها والخمائلا

    Oh, nothing rivals the open space where the breeze blows

    Watering its land and the thickets

  11. سقاها فروَّاها الغمام مبكرا

    وروى بها ابكارها والاصائلا

    The clouds watered it copiously before dawn

    Quenching its blossoms and branches

  12. ولاغبَّ ريعان النسيم ملاعباً

    بمحتلها بالأهل منها اواهلا

    The youthful breeze sported playfully

    With its meadows filled with kith and kin

  13. وقفت فابكتني الديار أواهلا

    وقد كنت لا ابكي الديار مواحلا

    I stopped and the abodes wept for me, their loved ones

    Though I did not use to weep for the abodes, their halting places

  14. منازل بين الجامعين كأنني

    قطعت لها حقّاً اليكم منازلا

    The dwellings between the two mosques are as though

    I have a right to them that I've apportioned to you

  15. هبوا ليَ قلباً ليس يسكن فورة

    متى ما أنهنهه استشاط مراجلا

    Bestow upon me a heart that does not settle down

    Whenever turmoil incites it to blaze

  16. أعاد له الهمُّ النزيع نوازعا

    من الوجد تستفري الضلوع مشاعلا

    Worry rekindled its embers

    Making my ribs burst into flames

  17. وهاج ليَ الشوق القديم مبرِّحاً

    بلابل احزان اهجن بلابلا

    And longing for you ignited me anew

    With nightingales of sorrows singing their laments

  18. فمن زفرة في الصدر ترقص لاعجاً

    ومن عبرة في الخد تنفض وابلا

    So from a sigh in my chest dancing frantically

    And from a teardrop on my cheek shedding its showers

  19. ولم ادر اذ هبَّ الشمال بذكركم

    شربت شمولاً ام شربت شمائلا

    I did not know, when the north wind blew your memory

    Whether I sipped something wholesome or poison

  20. ذكرتكم ذكر الخوامس وردها

    عطاشاً وما اعتاضت سواكم مناهلا

    I remembered you like remembering the vanished encampments

    Thirstily, and no spring quenched my thirst but you

  21. ولكنها نفسٌ هوتكم فحسَّنت

    اواخر ايام ذممن الأوائلا

    But it is a soul that fell for you, so it beautified

    The ends of my days over the beginnings

  22. على أن ليس نفساً لو اني سبكتها

    بنعتك نظماً لست احسب قائلا

    Still no soul, even if I poured it

    Into your attributes in verse, do I consider it enough

  23. اعللها بالشعر والشعر قاصرٌ

    اقول لعل الشعر يعقب طائلا

    I try to portray it in poetry but poetry falls short

    I say perhaps poetry will yield some benefit

  24. اعد نظرة حيي الغريَّ فأنني

    هويت لعينيك العيون القواتلا

    Cast another look, revive the stranger, for I

    Have fallen for your lethal eyes

  25. ويمم تلاعٍ الواديين محفِّزاً

    رواحل امثال القسي نواحلا

    And spur on the crossing of the two valleys

    Like the firm pillars of the overhanging cliff

  26. فثمة مغنى للوصي عرفته

    بساحته الأملاك القت كلاكلا

    For there is a haven for the guide I knew

    By his plain, where the angels threw pebbles

  27. تمسَّك به وامسك على الباب لاثماً

    سلاسل كم فكَّت لعانٍ سلاسلا

    Cling to him and cling to the door with a persistent kiss

    Chains that unleashed many chained hands

  28. وطالع لذاك المرقد المجتلي سنا

    تطالع به نورا لعينك كاحلا

    And look upon the illuminated tomb

    Where you look with light for your eye, even when bleary

  29. ودمت بعين اللَه والعين قرة

    تقرّبها حقّاً وترفع باطلا

    And remain in the eye of God while the eye is a joy

    Drawing near to Him sincerely and repelling falsehood
