كل صنع مصور في الوجود

هو صنع المصوِّرِ الموجود

Every creation depicted in existence

Is the work of the Existent Depictor

غير أنّ الإفرنج تعملُ فكراً

بمجاري التصويب والتصعيدِ

Yet the Franks construct a thought

Through the conduits of aiming and ascent

فكأنّ الأشكال ألقت إليها

قبل كون الأشياء بالإقليد

So it's as if the forms cast themselves unto them

Before the things were by molded clay

فتحوا مقفلاتِها بعقولٍ

قد ترقت لعالم التجريد

They unlocked their complexities with minds

That have risen to the world of abstraction

قل همُ لا تقس بهم من عداهم

بفنونٍ من مبدءٍ وَمعيدِ

Say they cannot be compared with others

In arts from a Beginner and Restorer

المحيطون بالكواكب بيضاً

وأولو الزيج في الليالي السودِ

Surrounding the planets white

And the possessors of conjunctions in the black nights

كل آنٍ لهم وكل زمانٍ

في الجديدين خلق فكر جديدِ

Every moment for them and every time

In the two news a new thought created

كيف تنقاد قلعة من حديدٍ

أو حديدٌ ينساب فوق حديدِ

How can a fortress of iron be tamed

Or iron flowing above iron

أبدلوها من الصعيد حديداً

فاعتلت صهوة الحديدِ الحديدِ

They changed it from rubble into iron

So it stood atop the summit of iron

سبحت في النحاس سبحاً طويلا

كسفين جرت بماء صديدِ

It swam in the copper a long swim

Like a ship that sailed in molten copper

لم تُخدِّد وجهَ الثرى بخدود

وهي إذ ذاك آية الأخدود

It did not sharpen the face of the earth with cheeks

While it was then a sign of the ravine

قيدوا موضع الخلاخل منها

بقيودٍ فاطلقت بالقيودِ

They confined the place of its crevices

With shackles so it broke free with shackles

وحصان تفحَّلت كحصان

أو كفحل عودٍ من البدنِ عيد

And a steed adorned like a steed

Or a stallion, a distanced perfume

بيد هل كيف حُصِّنت إذ تخلت

بحصانين في الموامي البيد

But by what means was it fortified when it abandoned

With two steeds in the desolate places

عقدوها لمقربين ولما

يقربها لقرب حلّ العقود

They contracted it for intimates and what

Draws it near to the proximity of untying knots

أسرعت تطلب اختها بعنيقٍ

لِعناق وضم جيد لجيدِ

It hastened seeking its sister with a neigh

For an embrace and pressing of cheek to cheek

لم تخن عهدَ تربها بوعودِ

وهي إذ ذاك لم تفِ بالوعود

It did not betray its upbringing with promises

While it was then did not fulfill promises

جعلوا مجمع اللقاء افتراقاً

بحدود فلم تقف بحدودِ

They made the place of meeting separation

With boundaries yet it did not stand at boundaries

فالوراء القريب غير قريب

والأمامُ البعيد غير بعيدِ

For the distant is not far beyond

And the front near is not near

أين منها البريد وهي على أر

بع تمشي وأين مشيُ البريدِ

Where is the mail from it while upon four

It walks and where is the walking of mail

والمليك الوقود هل كيف ين

قاد انسحابا كسوقة بمقودِ

And the machine fuel how can it possibly

Be tamed retreating like one holding reins

بين ما عطلت بغير عديدٍ

إذا تعدت بعدّة وعديدِ

Amongst what it disabled without troops

When it transcended with numbers and troops

أقبلت ترعد الفرائص منها

فاصتطارت فرائس الرعديدِ

It came thundering down the horsemen from it

So the horsemen of thunder took flight

لا كمثل القطيع أوجع ضربا

في جلودٍ بقطعه من جلودِ

Not like a flock oh how painfully struck

In hides by cutting it from hides
