1. أعلمت من هنَّا وهنَّا

    أضنيتني حاشاك ضنا

    I have learned from here and there

    You have saddened me, far be it from you, sadness

  2. قم فازجر الطير البوارح

    سانحاً رشأً اغنَّا

    Arise and repel the predatory birds

    With a flowing, melodious voice

  3. واعتنَّ كالطيف الطروق

    بمقلة الصب المعنى

    And take care, like the gentle breeze

    Of the eyelash of youthful meaning

  4. واهزز ليَ القد الرشيق

    مثقف الانبوب لدنا

    And shake for me the slender, well-formed body

    Cultured and refined

  5. ارعيك مني مقلة

    واسدُّ عن واشيك اذنا

    Regard me with a eyelash

    And block your ear from hearing ill of me

  6. واسرّح اللحظ الطموح

    بذلك الجعد المثنى

    And unleash the ambitious glance

    With those curled twin locks

  7. آليت اقرب دانياً

    او راشفاً من فيك دنّا

    I have become the closest confidant

    Or the most compassionate towards your distress

  8. واعضُّ فيك اناملا

    صفرا تشير اليك غبنا

    And I bite my fingers in you

    Yellow, pointing to you in sorrow

  9. فلضلَّ من قد قاسني

    ولبانتي في قيس لبنى

    So he who has tested me has strayed

    And my affliction in Qais is evident

  10. او بابن عجلان وإن

    ورد الحمام وما تأنى

    Or Ibn 'Ajlan even if

    The pigeons return and do not tire

  11. حمَّلت قلبي ثقل ما

    قد خفَّ منها الطود وزنا

    I have burdened my heart with a weight

    Lighter than which is the mountain and heaviness

  12. يشتق من معناك معنى ال

    حسن لي لفظا ومعنى

    It derives from your meaning a meaning that

    Is no fine expression or meaning for me

  13. امَّا تراني ناحلاً

    او خاضلاً بالدمع ردنا

    Whether you see me conversing

    Or failing, with tears flowing

  14. او رافعاً من ناظر

    من كاسر بالغنج جفنا

    Or raising from my eyes

    Those broken by coquetry and sorrow

  15. أمحمد قد راق شعرك

    في الورى لفظا ومعنى

    O Muhammad, your poetry is pleasing

    In the world, in expression and meaning

  16. جاريت فيه زهيره

    ولعزَّ فيه زهير خدنا

    In it flow Zuhair

    And charm with coquetry, Zuhair's cheek

  17. احرزت من قصباته

    متفنناً فناً ففنا

    From its canes I have gained

    Artistry upon artistry

  18. زدنا من النظم الذي

    هو منقص بزياد زدنا

    Increase for us from the poetry which

    Is deficient, with additions increase for us
