1. من صاح بالدين والدنيا إلا اعتبرا

    جرى المقدر محتوما خذا وذرا

    He who censured religion and worldly affairs except as a lesson

    Fate ran its destined course, so take and leave

  2. من قالَ للفلكِ العلوي مجترأً

    إن القضاء على مجري القضاء جرى

    He who insolently said to the highest orbit:

    "Surely fate follows the course of fate"

  3. منغال من هاشم البطحاء سيدها

    البحر والبدر الضرغامة الهصرا

    The one depressed from Hashim, the lord of Bat'ha

    The sea, the moon, the Pleiades and Cancer

  4. تنفس الصبح حزنا حال منه ضحى

    وجهٍ نفست عليه الشمس والقمرا

    The dawn sighed sorrowfully when it shone upon him

    A face which the sun and moon breathed upon

  5. إن عرّس الركب ليلا في معرسه

    لا ينحر البدن حتى ينحر البُدَرا

    If the riding party camped at night in its campsite

    The body isn’t slaughtered until the full moon is slaughtered

  6. القاتل المحل في الأزمان إن دثرت

    والمحيي من أزماتِ الدهر ما دثرا

    The killer of eras, if they are clothed

    And the reviver from the calamities of time, whatever is clothed

  7. يا عثرةً لم تقل من بعد عاثرها

    يا لالعاً بعدها للدهر إن عثرا

    O downfall that did not say after its downfall

    O brilliance for time if it stumbles

  8. كم قلتُ حين نعى الناعي عجمت فماً

    أكفف نعيت نزار العرب بلُ مضرا

    How often I said when the mourner mourned, my mouth silenced

    I will restrain my mourning, the Arabs' mourning for Al-Mudar

  9. ينعاك نعي ذباب السيف قائمه

    والكف ساعدها والساعد الظفرا

    Your mourning is mourned by the wailing of the sword looming

    And the palm its handle, and the forearm the fingers

  10. ينعاك نعي قناة الخظ فقرتها

    والقوس حنوتها والمعجس الوترا

    Your mourning is mourned by the bow's curvature

    And the bow bent, and the taut string

  11. ينعاك نعي فتاة الحي واحدها

    ولهي عليه تذيل الدمع منهمرا

    Your mourning is mourned by the maiden of the tribe on her own

    As she trails her flowing tears upon it

  12. ينعاك لليل إذ تحييه مبتهلا

    حتى تميت به آناءه سهرا

    Your mourning for the night when you supplicated it

    Until you died by its hours of vigil

  13. ينعاك للصبح ردّ الليل حاجبه

    حتى تمنطق بالظلماء واتزرا

    Your mourning for the dawn, returning the night’s frown

    Until it loosened its darkness and unveiled

  14. يا صفقة الدين قد قلَّت بضاعته

    لك الأنام فدىً إن قلَّ أو كثرا

    O deal of the religion, its goods have diminished

    You are ransom for the people if few or plenty

  15. غادرت سفر ذوي الامال أعينه

    صور إليك يرى وجدانه صورا

    You left the journey of the hopeful, their eyes weeping

    Your image appears to them, they see their fervor

  16. إن صاخ للناس سمع أو رنا بصرٌ

    فأنت للناس كنت السمع والبصرا

    If he appealed to the people, a hearing or a seeing glance

    You were to the people both hearing and sight

  17. ما بعد محياك للمهدي محبرة

    لمن ينير ويسدي بعك الحبرا

    After your erasure, what use are the ink wells

    For one who illuminates and donates ink through you

  18. أو بعد جدواك للراجعين غيث جدىً

    أو بعد علياك للاجين ليث شرى

    Or after your striving, a useful downpour

    Or after your ascent, a fierce lion for the seekers

  19. يا معلق الناب في قلب الردى عجباً

    هل كيف أعلق فيك الناب والظفرا

    O you who hung the muzzle in the hearts of the hostile, how strange!

    How can I hang the muzzle and fingers upon you?

  20. لو كان يحمي من الأقدار مقتدر

    لردَّ باسك عنك الحتم والقدرا

    If one powerful over fates could protect

    He would have averted destiny and fate from you

  21. يا مزجر النضو فيه قاطعا شققاً

    لم يحتفل بعياف الطير أن زجرا

    O reprover of evil wherein he cut paths

    Not celebrating the cawing of birds when reproving

  22. عرج لمكة والبيت العتيق وقف

    لوث الأزار وعز الركن والحجرا

    Make pilgrimage to Mecca and the Ancient House, stop

    Defile the loincloth, honor the cornerstone and stones

  23. قف موقف الفاقد الحران فيه وقل

    ما بعد فقد أبي المصرين أمّ قرى

    Stop with the sorrow of the bereft therein and say

    After the loss of the father of the two holy sites

  24. واثن العنان لسامراء ننشدها

    من كبَّ للحسن الزاكي جفان قرى

    Restrain toward Samarra, we chant it

    The one who bridled the radiant, pure Hassan

  25. بالهون تصبح سامراء سامرها

    يطارح الهمّ والأحزا والكدرا

    Samarra by grief becomes its own grief

    Casting off worries, distress and gloom

  26. من حافظ للملوك الأرض سلطنة

    قد ضاع من يدها من يمنع الخطرا

    The one who protected the kings’ authority

    Whose hand it escaped from, preventing harm

  27. من للمالك يرعاها رعايته

    بناظر في خفايا السر قد نظرا

    The one who tended it with his care

    Looking into the secrets of the mysterious matter

  28. هيهات مثلك في الدنيا يُرى بشر

    يا معوزا سعة الدنيا بها بشرا

    Alas, the like of you is not seen in the world

    O you who filled the world with good news and glad tidings

  29. نقلّ منك على قدس لو انتدبا

    قدس ويذبل نهضاً فيه ما قدرا

    Were you carried from it to Jerusalem, it would have withered

    Not bearing your body, soul, and frame upon its shoulders

  30. سل حامليه على الأعناق هل حملوا

    على العواتق جسم الروح والزبرا

    Ask its bearers on their necks, did they carry

    The scrolls of Abraham and the surahs?

  31. هذا محمدُ محمول له جسد

    وأروا به صحف إبراهيم والسورا

    At your tomb they bent the spearheads in devotion

    Muting the flutes and the remembrance of dhikr

  32. ثنوا بقبرك صدر الرمح منأطرا

    صم الأنابيب والصمصامة الذكرا

    O you who secluded the remaining group in its loneliness

    And gathered the departed group around you in camaraderie

  33. يا موحش النفر الباقي لوحدته

    ومونس النفر الماضي له سمرا

    Surely knowledge, when it surveys the valleys

    God made the flowers and breasts barren therein

  34. إن العلوم إذا لاحظت أودية

    أحله اللَه منها الورد والصدرا
