طربت لعلوي من الريح شاقني

لريا بريا البان من علَمي نجدِ

The winds made my tent quiver,

In the pasturelands of Najd from my homeland.

تنفس يهدي ل عقابل لوعة

بكاتمة للحب والناجيات بنا تخدي

A breeze that brings solace to my grief,

With hidden sorrows of love, we girls endure.

ولما هبطنا الجزعِ من مسقط النقا

وطحنا على شيح الأباطح والرندِ

When we descended from the cliff of Naqa,

And pitched our tents on Shaykh and ar-Randal.

مغذّين نبغي سرحة القاع بالحمى

وللعيس إرسالٌ بذاك الثرى الجعدِ

Seeking the plain of Qa'a with yearning,

And sending the camel mares to that sandy ground.

خمائلُ أزهارٍ وزهرُ حمائِلٍ

مجودةِ أحوى الروض تعبق بالندِّ

Meadows of flowers and flowered meadows,

Fragrant with dew, the garden exudes scent.

فيا لتباريح تروح وتغتدي

عَليَّ بها دَعدٌ لِيَ اللضه من دَعدِ

Oh how wonderful are the nights that depart and return

Bringing to me a smarting pain from their sting.

لَقَد حكم البين المطوّح في الحشا

موءللة يعلقن بالحجر الصلدِ

Separation has judged between us in the wilderness,

Suspending us from a solid rock face.

أراجعةٌ أيّام لهويَ والهوى

باغلمةٍ مُردٍ وملمومةٍ جُردِ

Days of passion and fervent love

In bitter desolation and barrenness.

وهل أطرقن تلك القباب مخاطراً

بمأثورةٍ قضبٍ ومطرودةٍ مُلدِ

Did those domes really venture into dangers

With a transmitted legacy of dried branches?

وَهَل أُسرح العينَ الطليحة مسرحاً

بذي البان ملتفّ الأرجاع بالسَعدِ

Shall I divert my restless eyes in diversion

To the pasturelands folded in Sa'd?

مواطن إلّا في ومجمعِ رفقتي

صفا بهم عيشي وساغ بهم وِردي

I had no homes save in the dwelling places of my friends

While with them my life was pleasant and my wine sweet.

ذكرتُهُم ذكراً على البعد بعدهم

ولَستُ بناسيهم على القرب والبعدِ

I remembered them from afar when far from them

But near or far I do not forget them.

رَعيتُ لهم عَهد الأخاء وإن يكن

تجافوا فلم يرعو إذمامي ولا عهدي

I kept the covenant of brotherhood with them even though

They broke it, heeding not my rope nor covenant.

رَموا بيَ مَرمى الهيم في كلِّ وهدةٍ

خلاءٍ خلَت حتى من البوم والربدِ

They cast me away with the casting of obsessions

In every desolate moment, even devoid of owl and cold.

تلقيتُ فيها لفحَ حرِّ سمومها

بأفئدةٍ يُسدي لها الشوق ما يُسدي

I met in it thehot breaths of their poisons,

With hearts that longing provides what it provides.
