A slender maiden of Turkish descent enchanted me,
And poured out her tears like gentle rain.
Her eyes were kohl-dark, her hair jet black,
Slender of form, shapely of body.
The morning breeze swayed her to and fro,
Like strands of yarn gently stirred by the wind.
So the doves in the branches stayed still,
Charmed by her graceful movements.
Her cheeks were radiant,
And the mole on her cheek was sweet musk.
I desire union with her, and she desires to abandon me.
Where are her true feelings amidst what I desire?
I speak while my love is plundered by rivals,
And tears from my eyes pour down in streams.
Woe to love, if I listen to blame -
I turn a deaf ear and establish a firm resolve.
My heart since we parted has been in agony,
Wounded by the feed of sadness.
My eyes have not ceased shedding copious tears,
As if my weeping is a steady, flowing stream.
I spent the night sleepless and anguished,
With the stars keeping me company in my vigil.
