1. درى الدهراي غشمشم أردى

    وأيّ شمام لهاشم هدّا

    The days have turned against me like warriors,

    And which brave warrior withstands spears?

  2. ويا هل درى أي مارنَ دقَّ

    وأية كفّ أطار وزندا

    Do you know which lofty ships the seas wrecked?

    And which palm was plucked and its dates scattered?

  3. أما آن للدهر أن يستردا

    فيلوي وعيداً وينجز وعدا

    Will not time reclaim what it gave?

    Twisting its threats and keeping its vows?

  4. هو الدهر لأسهمه يُتقى

    وإن قيل نهنه رمى السهم عمدا

    Time is to be feared for its arrows.

    And if it's said it shot arrows deliberately,

  5. فما عاد إلا أصاب واصمي

    وما كفّ إلا أعاد وأبدى

    Then it only struck and my kinsmen were hit,

    And it only folded what it spread and initiated,

  6. وما ناب إلا انثنى ظافرا

    يحكم ظفرا وناب أحدّا

    And it only turned victoriously,

    Governing victory and excelling.

  7. وما نحن إلا كشاء الرعاة

    يروِّعُنا الموت شلّاً وطردا

    We are but like shepherds' sheep,

    Death frightens us, dispersing and expelling.

  8. وما الموت إلا كغرب الحسام

    فما غبَّ إلا ليأكل غمدا

    And death is but like the setting of swords -

    It only disappeared to sheathe itself.

  9. ولا بدّ للمرء من كبرة

    وأنّي ولم يلف عن ذاك بدّا

    Man is destined for a final calamity,

    And how can one evade what is inescapable?

  10. وهل يُفلتُ المرء من صرعةٍ

    يوسّد فيها على الترب خدّا

    Can a man elude the convulsion of death

    Where he lays his cheek in the dust as a pillow?

  11. فليت بنات ليالي الخطو

    ب تمنِّع وصلا وتمنح صدا

    If only the nights of calamities would forbid

    Reunion and allow separation.

  12. وأعظمُ ما هدّ ركن الجلاد

    وأوهن عظماً ومزّق جلدا

    The greatest thing that shook the pillar of severity

    And weakened the bone and tore the skin,

  13. وجدّد ثوب عنّا مُخلقا

    واخلق ثوبَ عُلىً مستجدّا

    And made a new robe out of the old one

    And tailored a splendid new robe,

  14. مصاب أصاب أهيل الغري

    وغار فطبَّق غورا ونجدا

    Was the affliction that befell the people of the valley

    And dwelled in the valley and highlands.

  15. رمى مضرا وقريش البطاح

    وصكّ نزار العلى ومعدّا

    It struck Mudar and Quraish of the sands

    And Nizar's heights and Ma'ad's plains

  16. بما رد خطبٍ دهى الخافقين

    مشيباً فلم يعدُ شيباً ومردا

    With what silenced the eloquent tongues

    And did not leave eloquence or ability to respond.

  17. طوى من غوارب بحر العلوم

    خضمّاً إذا جزر البحر مدّا

    Folding the turban of the sea of knowledge

    When the sea was at ebb and flow.

  18. وما غاض حتى اكتست من ندى

    يديه الأباطح شيحا ورندا

    It did not recede until my hands were adorned

    By its dew, sleek and soft.

  19. لقد فلّ مقضب شرع النبي

    وقطع بالرغم للدين سردا

    The Prophet's canon is ruined

    And the religion's path is forcibly severed.

  20. وأصدأ إفرند صقل الحسام

    فاثكل غرب الحسام الفرندا

    The polishing sword is rusted

    So the foreign sword triumphed over the native one.

  21. قضى من يرد عوادي الخطوب

    ويلجم منها أقبّ ونهدا

    It fulfilled whoever would restore calamity

    And restrain whichever exuberance and bosom.

  22. قضى مَن إذا اعتركت رَوعةٌ

    أعدّ جنانا لدى الروع جلدا

    It fulfilled whoever if terror descended

    Would prepare reprisal at the place of terror.

  23. مُرمّاً يصافح وجه الثرى

    بوجه كشقة بدرٍ تبدّى

    Kissing the earth’s face with a face

    Like the full moon's disk appearing.

  24. وما كنت أحسب ثغر المنون

    يُعلق فيه نواجذَ دردا

    I did not expect the mouth of death

    To be adorned with such pearls.

  25. بيوم أطال غليل الصدور

    وقلَّص عن ساق ذي الفضل بُردا

    On a day that prolonged hearts' anguish

    And diminished the chill toward the virtuous.

  26. تعطل بعدك جيد العلوم

    وقد كنت في منحر الفضل عقدا

    After you, the necklace of knowledge is paralyzed

    While you were its pearl in the necklace of merit.

  27. فيا بدر هلا أقابل بدراً

    لوجهك أم هل أطالعُ سعدا

    O full moon, should I sight another full moon

    Or look upon a star to replace your face?

  28. فقدتك فقد الربيع الغمام

    وقد غبّ صوبُ الغمام فاكدى

    After you, I take no joy in calamities

    And I resent time past that is gone.

  29. فبعدك لم استرب بالخطوب

    ولست أعادي زماناً تعدى

    Should I be arrogant with a haughty nose

    And secretly harbor rancor toward fate?

  30. وهل اشمخنَّ بأنف أشم

    وأضمر بعدُ على الدهر حقدا

    I remain deceiving the tricks of time

    And walking counter to fate and its expelling.

  31. بقيتُ أخادع كيد الزمان

    وأمشي على الدهر عكساً وطردا

    As if I mounted the hillsides of misguidance

    Seeking direction but finding no guidance.

  32. كأني امتطيت قرى ضالع

    تدحرج يطلب في السير وخدا

    How honorable you were when calamities came;

    My aspirations sought honor and were content.

  33. وكم عزة لك قعساً أبت

    طلابي من مشرع الذل وردا

    I disdain that after glory came abundant

    Wailing the day glory perished.

  34. لعزّ على المجد أن يكثر ال

    عويل بيوم بعد المجد أودى

    If the guiding moon has set, a guiding lamp remains

    Whose guidance from that moon guided us better.

  35. لئن غاب بدرُ هدى نيرٌ

    هدينا ببدر هدىً منه أهدى

    A youth who gathered merit’s edges -

    Sublimity, knowledge, jest, and seriousness.

  36. فتى جمع الفضل أطرافه

    علاءً وعلما وهزلاً وجدا

    A youth the ages fruitlessly imitated,

    Thus he lived peerlessly unique.

  37. فتىً عُقمَ الدهر عن مثله

    فعاش كمثل الجمانة فردا

    O son of daring Hāshimite leaders

    Who trod upon defiance with guidance.

  38. فيا ابن المغاوير من هاشم

    ضواري تضري على الزجر هدا

    With thick shoulders among those who competed

    For the highest rank, honor and glory.

  39. وضخم المناكب من زاحموا

    مناط الكواكب عزا ومجدا

    You see them intercept like claws

    When the valiant meet for combat.

  40. تراهم إذا اعترضوا في اللقا

    شناخيب شمّاً صياخيد صلدا

    Obeyed, clement, obeyed and mild,

    Gracious, noble, generous, praised.

  41. مطاعينُ جردا مطاعيم بزلا

    مواهيب عرفا مكاسيب حمدا

    Bear patience and know that the course of events

    Only struck and caused grief when it turned.

  42. ردِ الصبر واعلم بأن الردى

    فما اعتدّ إلا أصاب وأردى

    Restrain your tears for he is the pigeon

    Who passed having been neither free nor enslaved.

  43. وكفكف دموعك فهو الحمام

    يمرّ فلم يبق حرّاً وعبدا

    None escaped the line of his plan

    Even if he fled a course and hastened.

  44. ولم ينج من سامهُ خطة

    وإن جرّ مجرىً وسوّمُ جردا

    None of us remains capable

    Of armor or grasping a sword.

  45. ولم يبق منا على حاسر

    ولا دارع أحكم الزعف شدا

    The same to us are the vulnerable man

    As the armed and ready man.

  46. وسيان منا امرء أعزل

    وشاكٍ له بالسلاح استعدا

    He who passed safely will not be harmed,

    A father like Ali or Ahmed my grandfather.

  47. وما ضرَّ من قد مضى محرزا

    أباً كعليٍّ وأحمد جدا
