1. والي الولاة إليك مظلمتي

    أشكو بعين الواحد الأحدِ

    To the governor of governors, I bring my grievance

    I complain to the One, the Unique

  2. لرواقك الشاكون قد عمدوا

    ورواق عدلك مشرع العمدِ

    Those who frequent your halls have schemed

    While the halls of your justice stand open

  3. بلدٌ بها يرشى علانية

    والمرتشي هو حاكم البلدِ

    A land where bribery happens openly

    And the bribe-taker rules the land

  4. كيدٌ ولا فرعون كادبهِ

    موسى بنفث السحر في العقدِ

    A plot like no plot Pharaoh schemed

    Against Moses with his spellbinding knots

  5. سلطان حق أنت تظهره

    بالعدل والسلطان والرشدِ

    You are the sultan of truth made manifest

    Through justice, authority, and righteousness

  6. وبعدَّةٍ للرأي كالئةٍ

    للملك لا بالجند والعددِ

    With counsel fit for weighing matters

    Not through soldiers and number

  7. أن الممالك منك ينظمها

    سيفٌ ورمحٌ في يدي أسد

    Kingdoms are set right by you

    With sword and spear in the hand of a lion

  8. الدولة العليا بك اعتضدت

    يا ساعدا ما فتَّ بالعضدِ

    The supreme state is supported by you

    O mighty arm, unfailing in strength

  9. ما زلت تطرد كل مغتشم

    باغرّ أو بأصم مطردِ

    You keep expelling each usurper

    With snarling mouth or casting out the deaf

  10. المغنيات السمر في سلب

    والغانمات الخيل في طردِ

    The dark-skinned singers you despoiled

    The war mares you captured in raids

  11. صنت الثغور بكل منصلتٍ

    وغوار كل مغاور جلدِ

    You protected the frontiers with each sharpened blade

    And the boldness of every bold warrior

  12. وبجدّ صافي اللون ليس به

    صدء لنهل دم العدو صدي

    With pure white seriousness, in it no blemish

    Of the blood of enemies, clashing and echoing

  13. قد قلت للنفس أقصدي تجدي

    باب الوزير لكل مقتصدِ

    I said to myself: Seek him, you will find

    The vizier's door open to all who seek

  14. أني مددت إلى رجاك يدي

    يا واليَ الإسلام خذ بيدي

    I stretched my hands out beseeching you

    O Guardian of Islam, take my hand

  15. لك في الرعايا طول بسطيد

    طالت ببسط العدل كلّ يد

    Watch over the subjects, your eye uplifted

    Blinking from wakefulness and sleeplessness

  16. ترعى الرعية منك عين علاً

    مكحولة الأجفان بالسهدِ

    Your watchful eye forgot no one

    Whether near or far, all came under its care

  17. لم تكرَ عينُ علاك عن أحد

    إن حلَّ في قرب وفي بُعد

    A body without a head, if it loses

    Its protector, is like a head without a body

  18. جسدٌ بلا رأس إذا ترك ال

    مظلوم أو رأس بلا جسدِ

    Likewise, armor cannot protect a body

    If the armor lacks gems

  19. وكذاك درع لا تقي بدناً

    فيها تكن درعاً بلا زردِ

    By God, the month of Muharram, they treated as lawful

    The sanctity of the Eternal, the Self-Sufficient

  20. للَه شهر محرم فلقد

    فيه استحلّوا حمرة الصمد

    And on its tenth day, a band

    Slew the martyrs of Karbala together

  21. واست بعاشر يومه نفرٌ

    شهداء يوم الطف أواحد

    By it, they permitted forbidden bloodshed

    Mindlessly, without law or punishment

  22. فلقد أباح به حرامَ دمٍ

    هدرا بلا عقلٍ ولا قودِ

    Until the vizier appointed guards for it

    And God sees all with His watching

  23. حتى إذا بعث الوزير له

    رصداً وعين اللَه بالرصدِ

    So the punishment for a misdeed came quickly

    And saw the punishment before tomorrow

  24. فتعجلت لعمٍ عقوبته

    فرأت عقاب اليوم قبل غدِ

    Oh how woeful! He overreached his hand

    He got what he got from his envy

  25. يا بئسما قد قدَّمت يده

    قد نال ما قد نال من كمد

    For cursed envy called him

    And man is molded towards envy

  26. فلقد دعاه لشقوة حسد

    والمرء مجبول على الحسد
