1. قم فاطوِ من نشر الشذا ما فاحا

    وانشر لنا معقوصك الفياحا

    Arise, O Zephyr, and scatter fragrance around,

    And spread for us your perfumed eastern breeze,

  2. وامط لثام الورد عن متفتق

    ورد تفتحه الصبا نفاحا

    Remove the veil from the unveiled rosebud,

    A breeze opened by the morning blow.

  3. زاهٍ يلوح بمذهبين تدبجا

    ديباجتين بأطلس قد لاحا

    A river flows in two colors interwoven,

    An interwoven brocade that shone,

  4. أعنادل البان اصدحي سحراً على

    عذب الغصون ورددي الأصداحا

    High slim branches call at dawn,

    On the sweet boughs echoing with delight.

  5. طاب الصفوح بصبح سالفة الحمى

    فادر صبوح الصرخدي صباحا

    The mornings shined in recovered warmth,

    So serve a morning drink O bartender!

  6. فكأنما الأقداح حين يجيلها الس

    ساقي يجيل قداح لا أقداحا

    As if when the goblets are heated by the wine,

    The pourer heats goblets not real goblets.

  7. وكأن طاووس السقاة جلا الطلا

    طاسات راح أترعت أرواحا

    And as if the peacock of cupbearers wore

    Bowls that bare souls had sipped.

  8. وكأننا والشرب مال بهامنا

    انضاء شرب قد رزحن طلاحا

    As if we and the tilting cups towards us

    Drew a tilt that made us stoop.

  9. أمليحة الحيين هل بك راجع

    عصر حلبت عصيره أفراحا

    O beautiful fawn, are you coming back

    An era whose pressed juice was joys?

  10. عصر المشيب أردد عليَّ شبيبتي

    نفَّرت يا عصر المشيب ملاحا

    The era of gray hairs send back my youth,

    You denied it O era of gray hairs.

  11. ولقد خلعت على المشيب رداء ذي

    وصب تعذب في الصبا والتاحا

    And you had put on gray hairs a garment of

    Pure melting in youth and bending.

  12. فالعين من عينيك تشرب قرقفا

    والراح من خديك تحمل راحا

    So the eye drinks chills from your eyes,

    And the spirit carries comfort from your cheek.

  13. فانصع لنا خدّاً يشف شقائقا

    والمع لنا ثغرا يرفُّ اقاحا

    Sparkle a cheek that heals hearts,

    Shine a mouth that softly smiles.

  14. نجني جنيَّ الورد منه مفتحا

    غضا ونقطف يا نعاً تفاحا

    We pick the blooming roses, still buds,

    And gently pluck, O Naeem, apples.

  15. ولقد يعز عليك لو شاهدتني

    بجوانح ذلّاً خفضن جناحا

    It hurts you if you saw me

    With wings humbly folded.

  16. أترشف النزر البكي كعاطش

    يترشف الأثماد والضحضاحا

    I sip the few tears like a thirsty man

    Sipping the water-skins and pouches.

  17. لن يسترنَّ الحب خلة أهله

    حتى يكون لاهله فضاحا

    Love won’t hide the rendezvous of lovers

    Until it exposes them.

  18. ولرب اعفر من تهائم وجرة

    قد راح يمرح غدوة ورواحا

    Many shaggy camels ferociously walk

    Frolicking morning and eve.

  19. ومدفع الأوراح ودَّ لوانه

    بالريط ينهض والشفوف مِراحا

    The repeller of passions colored its periods

    With saliva, it rises and overflows.

  20. فلوى يديه عليَّ طوقاً مذهباً

    ولويت فضل يدي عليه وشاحا

    He twisted his arms around me a gilded necklace,

    And I twisted the end of my hand over him as a wrap.

  21. خرج المخلخل والنطاق بخصره

    قد جال ينطق مفصحاً أفصاحا

    The anklets and belt on his waist

    Rattled, articulating eloquently.

  22. خرست هزارة منحني خلخاله

    وشدا هزار نطاقه صيداحا

    The jingling bells of his bending anklet

    Tied up, jingling joyfully.

  23. وبمسرح الوادي الأغن أغن من

    سرح يناقل ربربا سناحا

    In the valley’s lively theater, a singer sings

    Songs and anthems more melodious than a flock.

  24. وبمسقط الرضراض من رمل الحمى

    ذعر تلبث ينشق الأرواحا

    On the terrace of the Pleiades in the heat’s sand,

    Afraid, remaining, cleaving the spirits.

  25. مستشرفا فواق اليفاع مخاتلا

    أحوى يصرف أكحلاً طماحا

    Watching the range of the towering dunes, avoiding

    The pitfalls, turning away ferociously.

  26. أتبعته النظر الحديد وراءه

    صلتان جاب روابياً وبطاحا

    My sharp sight followed him behind,

    Two braids swept the meadows and lowlands.

  27. ورد العذيب فصحت يا قناصه

    ظبي النقيب علىالموارد طاحا

    The brown oryx cried so I called: O hunter

    My oryx fell on the water-spring and died.

  28. أشكو إليه كواسرا أجفانها

    ترنو إلي مع العشي صحاحا

    I complain to him of deadly eyelashes

    That glance at me in the dusk askance.

  29. أرسلت لي تلك الضعاف قوادرا

    فاتحتها قدراً عليَّ متاحا

    Those weak ones sent me cauldrons

    I opened them, finding harm from them.

  30. مازلت يا شاكي السلاح باعزل

    حتى بشاكلتيه صرت سلاحا

    O you who blame weapons, I kept dodging,

    Until with my dodging, I became a weapon.

  31. تنضي اللحاظ السود بيض صوارم

    وتهز أعطاف القدود رماحا

    The black eyelids shine with the whites of swords

    And the bending of the necks shake spears.

  32. أتصفح الأجفان منك صفائحاً

    صقلت لها أيدي القيون صفاحا

    I browse your eyelids like polished blades

    That the hands of smiths polished smoothly.

  33. يكفيك نجلاواك عنك تكافحا

    هلا كففت وقد كفيت كفاحا

    Reproaching you wearies me to the point

    I reproached while I wearied of reproach.

  34. لنصبتني شبح السهام صوائبا

    سميت فيها الخمسة الأشباحا

    Had you not made me a target of arrows

    I would not have called the five mirages.

  35. ما زالت سوق الحب يوكس صفقتي

    حتى أقمت الوصل فيه رباحا

    The love market kept refusing my deal

    Until I produced profit in it.

  36. سنح الغزال لركب هاشم بالمنى

    فانصاع ركب منى به مرتاحا

    The oryx knelt for the Hashimi caravan in Mina

    So the Mina caravan knelt to it relieved.

  37. أسليل صالح والفتى الضرب الذي

    نفحت مخائل عارضيه سماحا

    Grandson of the righteous Suleiman, whose qualities

    His cheek moles diffused generosity.

  38. فلقد حلبت الفضل ضرعاً حافلا

    حتى شربت الدر منه ضراحا

    So you milked virtue a brimming udder

    Until you drank the essence from it fresh.

  39. أمحمد ولأنت من هالاته

    قمر به سدف الظلام انزاحا

    O Muhammad, you are from his auras

    A moon dispelling the darkness of night.

  40. سلك الأنام بك السبيل فعاذر

    لو لقبوك الأبيض الوضاحا

    People walked your path so forgive

    If they titled you the eloquent white moon.

  41. بك يجلي للناس صبح هداية

    أيام وجهك ينجلي مصباحا

    Through you the dawn of guidance shines for people

    When your days shine illuminating a lamp.

  42. لا يحسن الوجه الجميل لناظر

    حتى به تروي الوجوه قباحا

    A beautiful face looks not good to a seer

    Until through it he quenches ugly faces.

  43. بيضت في الأواحا ما قد سودوا

    ولظلَّ قوم سودوا الألواحا

    You whitened in tablets what they blackened

    And removed the shadows of people who shadowed the tablets.

  44. كم حامل للظعن وهو مخنث

    زوجته ذكر السيوف نكاحا

    How many carrier of rumors while impotent

    I married to the mentions of swords in marriage.

  45. ما زال يكتم حمله متحاملا

    تسعاً وأدركه المخاض فباحا

    He kept hiding his pregnancy pretending

    Until the contractions seized him so he yelled.

  46. إن كنت تعرف من سجاح وكذيبها

    في القلوب فاقرن كذبه وسجاحا

    If you know the lies and falsehoods of a slanderer

    Then pair their lies and falsehoods.

  47. ما رى المكاشح بهرة بوداده

    ثم امترى شوء بوبك الدلاحا

    The critic did not see the shine of cordiality

    Then pretended to be fiery in antagonism.

  48. لقحت بك الامال وهي عقائم

    إذا كنت للأمر العقام لقاحا

    Your hopes were pollinated while virgin

    If you were the pollinator of hopes.

  49. كم مقفل للفضل ارتج بابه

    حتى سننت لفتحه مفتاحا

    How many generous door was locked

    Until I made its key for its opening!

  50. لك والحسني حضيرة علوية

    مثلت إلى جنب الضراح ضراحا

    For you and Al-Hussein a spiritual retreat

    That neighbored the good water-spring a water-spring.

  51. با ابن الأولى نشأوا جوارح للعلى

    توسي الجراح وللعدو جراحا

    O son of the foremost, their limbs arose for the Sublime

    Binding wounds, and inflicting wounds on the enemy.

  52. وابن الذين استنبتوا ظهر الربى

    وسقوا ببطن الواديين بطاحا

    The son of two who planted the land’s back

    And irrigated the two valleys’ guts with water-springs.

  53. سقنا إليك الشعر لا لبضاعة

    تدعوك فادعو السائق الملحاحا

    We conveyed poetry to you not for trade

    Calling you so call the insisting carrier.

  54. للنجح نطلب غير أن طلابنا

    لك أن تصيب على النجاح نجاحا

    For success we seek but our seeking

    Is for you to achieve success on success.

  55. لن نحفلنَّ ببارح أو سانح

    أو ناعب متعرض قد صاحا

    We will not care for fleer or critic

    Or blamer who yelled and shouted.

  56. واسلم سلمت من الزمان يا سعد

    بك قد نفت أفراحه الأتراحا

    Be safe. You are safe from the times, O Saad,

    Through you its joys dispelled sorrows.
