1. درى الدهراي عميد أصابا

    فأوجس منه الزمان انقلابا

    The vicissitudes of fate struck down a pillar,

    So time was shaken with turmoil,

  2. ويا هل درت نكبات المنون

    غداة لوت من لوي عقابا

    Do you know the calamities of death

    When it twisted the neck of a flying eagle?

  3. رمت تاج رأس مليك الورى

    فخاراً ولم تبق غير الذنابي

    It threw down the crown from the head of the king of the world,

    Leaving nothing but eagle feathers,

  4. وعضت بادردها أنملاً

    تمير الرحاب وتروي الهضابا

    It bit off his fingers

    To separate the meadows and water the plateaus,

  5. وحيث أصابته أم المنون

    فكل غدا بأبيه مصابا

    And where the mother of death struck him

    Each tomorrow became a day of affliction for his father,

  6. فخل الجفون تصب الدموع

    برزء أتيح علينا انصبابا

    It left the eyelids pouring out tears

    For a beloved taken from us forcibly,

  7. لقد فلَّ بيضاً وحطم سمراً

    وكسر نبعاً ودقَّ حرابا

    Indeed it destroyed some whites and broke some blacks,

    And smashed a spring and beat down a blade,

  8. وقشع غيثا وعرقب ليثاً

    وزلزل طوداً ودكّ هضابا

    It held back a downpour and lameda lion,

    And shook a mountain and crumbled plateaus,

  9. قضى من يميط حجاب العلوم

    فمن للعلوم يميط الحجابا

    It took the one who could lift the veil of knowledge,

    So who now can lift the veil of knowledge?

  10. وأغلق رب الندى بابه

    فمن للمكارم يفتح بابا

    It closed the door of the Lord of bounty,

    So who will now open the door of generosity?

  11. فقل للضيوف قضى في الطفوف

    أمان المخوف إذا ما استرابا

    Say to the guests: The fearsome protector passed

    Whose presence banished all doubts,

  12. غريباً أرى يا غريب الديار

    برغم المعالي تموت اغترابا

    A stranger it seems, O stranger of the land,

    Despite glory, dying in exile,

  13. فيا راحلاً قد شعبت الفؤاد

    غداة ارتحلت تجوب الشعابا

    So traveler who made my heart riven

    When you traveled, roaming the rugged hills,

  14. ويا قافلاً خلفه الفاقدات

    دعت حسَّراً بأبٍ ما أجابا

    And O caravan left behind by the bereaved

    Who cried in sorrow for a father who did not reply,

  15. لرد الجواب لها نعشهُ

    فول كان نعش يرد الجوابا

    His bier would have answered them,

    But what bier can reply?

  16. وللَه درك من راحل

    اذل طلوباً وعز طلابا

    Woe to the one who left

    Humbled and exalted all who sought him,

  17. ويا لرزايا تشيب القلوب

    إذا ناب رزء له الرأس شابا

    And oh what adversities that whiten hearts

    When a calamity befalls a youthful head,

  18. ونائبة ظل منها الزمان

    يعط بروداً ويقرع نابا

    And a vicissitude whose shadow darkened time

    Giving out cold and striking the fangs,

  19. تداعت تقود إلى يعرب

    رعيلاً تألب خيلاً عرابا

    It gathered to lead to the wastelands

    An army of calamities to block horizons and meadows

  20. تشن إلى كل رحب الفنا

    غواراً يسد الفضا والرحابا

    Why O fate do you turn away the generous?

    Indeed you have exhausted the most steadfast,

  21. فمالك يا دهر تنحو الكرام

    بريب لقد شد ما قد أرابا

    You broke the noble nose of Hashim

    So it had to wrap itself in masks,

  22. هشمت لهاشم أنفاً أشما

    فراحت تلف عليه النقابا

    Who then can repel waves of afflictions

    When they burst forth violently enraged?

  23. فمن ذا يرد عوادي الخطوب

    إذا انبعثت تستتشيط غضابا

    And restrain the gushing mouth

    That bites necks and yearns for slaughter?

  24. ويلجم منها فماً فاغراً

    يلوك الشكيم ويحسوا للعابا

    Mourning the light of the world’s eye

    Extinguishing a flame and covering a flame,

  25. وناعٍ نعي نور عين الزمان

    فاطفي شهاباً وأورى شهابا

    Mourning the best of the victorious clan

    Whose loss to fate was a defeat,

  26. نعى أغلباً من بني غالب

    يغالبني الدهر فيه غلابا

    Mourning for Hussein the breeze of morning

    Blowing over him and moaning grievously,

  27. نعى للحسين نسيم الصبا

    هبوباً عليه وعزا مهابا

    Two leaders, each a sea of knowledge

    To the brim with deep obscured knowledge,

  28. أمامان كل فتىً منهما

    يعبي من العلم بحراً عبابا

    Two oceans made sweet its springs,

    And pure, refined ingots of silver melted down,

  29. وبحران قد عذبا منهلاً

    وطابا وروداً وساغا شرابا

    They adorned each ancestor’s pedigree,

    As flawless gems and refined silver,

  30. هما زيناً كل جدٍ حلى

    لجيناً خليصاً وتبراً مذابا

    None compares but the grandson of the two sons,

    The hero with the radiant forehead who revived the footsteps,

  31. فما منهما غير سبط البنان

    بطلق المحيا يحيي الركابا

    We knew through them the path of salvation,

    Without them we would not have known the right way.

  32. عرفنا طريق النجا فيهما

    ولولاهما ما عرفنا الصوابا

    “Follow my family and the Quran,” said

    The prophet of guidance, so we were guided.

  33. فإنّى نضل وقال الزموا

    نبي الهدى عترتي والكتابا

    Patience, my brothers, for God on high

    Rewards the steadfast with abundant reward.

  34. شقيقيه صبرا فإن الآله

    جزى الصابرين عطاء حسابا

    For the lion of the lair lies in the grave

    Leaving in the jungle a cub and a lioness,

  35. لأن غاب في اللحد ليث العرين

    لخلف في الغاب شبلا وغابا

    A pure, perfect one named for his perfection,

    Adorning all necks like a precious necklace,

  36. نقي جمان ومن كاسمه

    جمان نقي يزين الرقابا

    A face beaming when teeth are bared

    For battle, tireless in striking blows,

  37. ووضاح وجهٍ إذا ما للزما

    ن قطب وجهاً وكشر نابا

    When a insult stung, drawn like a sword

    He almost reached the scabbard with his strike,

  38. وعضباً صقيلاً بيوم القراع

    بضرب الطلى لا يمل الضرابا

    Ever inclined to pardon, tilting toward consent

    Upon the grandson of the pleased one he poured himself forth,

  39. إذا سيم ضيماً بسجف القراب

    تمطي فكاد يقدُّ القرابا

  40. ولا زال بالعفو صوب الرضا

    على ابن الرضا يصوب انسكابا
