1. أبا الفضل حسب المرء يبدء بالفضل

    تملك بعض الفضل من صنعكم كلي

    O Abu Al-Fadl, a man’s worth is known by his merit

    You have some merit that made you wholly distinguished

  2. اتيت بمعروفٍ سبقت به يدا

    على يديَ الطولى ومعروفي الجزل

    You have done a good deed, preceding with your hand

    Over my grateful hand, and my generous favor

  3. يدٌ لك مبدوء بصنع جميلها

    لمن يأتي من بعدي ومن قداتي قبلي

    A hand for you, begun with its beautiful making

    For whoever comes after me, and those before me

  4. جلبت بها خيلاً عليَّ مغيرة

    تخبُّ ومن ياقي الفوارس بالرجل

    With it you brought horses for me, altering

    Galloping, and who can match the horsemen on foot?

  5. فمن كل شاجي الصوت اجرد هيكل

    ويعرف عتق الخيل بالصوت والشكل

    So whoever strains his voice loudly

    And knows freeing horses by voice and form

  6. فكيف يجاري مقرباتك مقرف

    يدبُّ دبيب النمل في مسرب النمل

    How can your gifts compete with mine

    The ants creep in the ant's path

  7. فلا ضير أن قصَّرت عن شأو سابق

    فتى مثله في السبق فات فتىً مثلي

    So no harm that I fell short of a predecessor’s rank

    A youth like him in precedence surpassed a youth like me

  8. فتى بالقوافي الملد شاكٍ سلاحه

    واين الفتى الشاكي السلاح من العزل

    A youth whose long poems polish his weapons

    And where is the youth polishing weapons from isolation?

  9. تداولت العليا بنو الفضل بينها

    ولا كأبي الفضل المبرَّز بالفضل

    The high ones exchanged the merits between them

    But none like Abu Al-Fadl prominently meritorious

  10. لقد حلَّ من معتاصها أي رتبةٍ

    بها اقتاد اهل العلم بالعقد والحلّ

    He has certainly descended from its pillars, what rank

    With it he led the scholars with covenant and solution

  11. تعالى على العجم الاكاسرة الاولى

    ولم يرض ذا حتى على العرب يستعلي

    Rising above the non-Arab emperors

    And he would not accept that, even over the Arabs presumptuously

  12. ويركب صعب الامر سمح يروضه

    بوجه له طلق يرحب بالنزل

    And he rides the difficult matter gently, taming it

    With a face of ease that welcomes hospitality

  13. هو الزبرقان البدر في غلَس الدجى

    تهلل للساري على قتب الرحل

    He is the brilliant full moon in the darkness of night

    The banners rejoice for the rider at the high of the saddle

  14. وغيثٌ سكوبٌ يستهلُّ بوابل

    لعارض في شؤبوبه العارض الوبلي

    And pouring rain that starts with downpour

    For a guest in his disturbance, the confused guest

  15. وليت اذا ما الأمر اعضل ينبري

    يدلُّ بأنيابٍ مؤللة عصل

    And I wish if the matter became knotted he would spring up

    Baring blamed teeth, separating

  16. لقد قال فيه المجد ما لو عرضته

    على العقل زاد القول فيه على العقل

    Indeed praise has said of him what if I presented it

    To the mind, the words about him would exceed the mind

  17. ولست وان املى عليَّ خصاله

    بذي قلم محصٍ نوادر ما يملي

    And I cannot, even if I enumerated his traits

    With a judging pen, rare wonders dictate

  18. يقرطس بالسهم المريش وإنما

    يقرطس في الاغراض نبلا اخو النبل

    He shoots with feathered arrows, but rather

    He shoots lofty goals with the arrows of nobility

  19. اعار المعالي منه اذناً مصيخة

    واعرى له اخرى من اللوم والعذل

    The glories borrowed from him a listening ear

    And stripped for him another from blame and wrong

  20. لحمَّلتني فيضا لجسمي مثقلا

    وكيف خفيف الروح ينهض بالثقل

    You burdened me with an overflow for my laden body

    And how can a light spirit carry the burden?

  21. وقيدتني بالمنّ حتى تركتني

    كأنيَ من احسان مِنّك في شكل

    And you bound me with obligation until you left me

    As if I am, from your kindness, in obligation

  22. لتن قذفت يمناك لي بيتيمة

    من الدر زانتني بحليٍ لدى العطل

    When you tossed your right hand’s gifts to me, orphaned,

    It adorned me with jewelry in my empty times

  23. فما انت الا البحر يقذف مرخصا

    بلؤلؤة الغوّاص في كف من يغلي

    You are but the sea casting freely

    Pearls for the diver in the palm of one who dives

  24. فكيف ونحن كوكبا برج غايةٍ

    طلعنا طلوع الشمس في دارة الحمل

    So how can we, a planet and sign of the highest prominence

    Risen like the sun in the House of the Carrier

  25. قطعنا معاً من جوهر متناسبٍ

    واوصلت الآداب حبلك من حبلي

    We traversed together from a proportionate essence

    And manners tied your rope to my rope

  26. ارى الناس فيه اثنين طال ادعاهما

    فواحد عن علمٍ وآخر عن جهل

    I see people as two, their claim prolonged

    One of knowledge, and the other of ignorance

  27. ولا بدَّ للانسان من مركب به

    فامَّا على وعرٍ واما على سهل

    And man must have a mount by which

    Either on difficulty or on ease he goes

  28. تفرَّعت عن اصل زكا منه فرعه

    قديما وطيب الفرع دلَّ على الاصل

    It branched from a pure root, its branch

    Old, and the good branch points to the origin

  29. رميت بها في العين كحلاً وانّما

    من الشعر ما يغني الجفون عن الكحل

    I cast it in the eye as kohl, but rather

    Of poetry what delights the eyelids without kohl

  30. فمن كل عين ترسل الطرف ساجياً

    فتستوقف العينين بالأعين النجل

    So whoever sends a glancing eye

    Arrests the eyes with the soft gazes

  31. صقلت بك البيض القوافي متونها

    ويبرز افرند الحسام على الصقل

    I polished with you the white verses, their texts

    And the Indian sword's blade shines with polishing

  32. طبعن من السيف الصنيع غراره

    وما السيف الا بالغرار وبالنصل

    I stamped on the finely wrought sword its notches

    And the sword is but the notches and the blade
