1. طاف بإبريق طلاً حين صاح

    حي على الأقداح ديك الصباح

    He came round with a jug seeking dew when the rooster crowed

    Hail to the goblets as the dawn cock crows

  2. فقمت والقرقف في راحه

    أشرب من وجنته كاس راح

    So I got up while still relaxed

    And drank from his rosy cheek a cup of comfort

  3. وأقطف التفاح من خده

    راحي وتفاحي خدود الملاح

    And plucked apples from his cheeks

    My comfort and his apple-cheeked salinity

  4. يمزجها بالريق لي شادن

    يبسم عن ثغر كمثل الأقاح

    He mixes it with spittle for me, delighted

    Smiling from a mouth like first fruits

  5. نحيي لكي يطعن صلب الدجى

    بكاسه والليل داجي النواح

    We live so that he may pierce the heart of the pitch dark night

    With his cup, while the night is wailing lamentations

  6. لي من ثناياه ومن عينه

    معتلقاً مغتبق واصطباح

    For me, from his folds and his eyes

    Clinging, immersed, and vigilant

  7. منغمرٌ بالجهل لا ارعوي

    جهليَ علم وفادي صلاح

    Immersed in ignorance, I do not observe

    My ignorance is knowledge, and my redeemer is righteousness

  8. اخفض من ذلِّ جناحي له

    وهل لمقصوص الخوافي جناح

    I lower the wing of my humiliation to him

    Does one whose wings are cut have any wings?

  9. يجيل الحاظاً مراضاً له

    بأبي تلك المراض الصحاح

    He is jealous of my passionate love for him

    By my father, that pure jealousy

  10. أطمح بالعين إلى عينه

    مآفة الإنسان إلا الطماح

    I aspire with my eyes toward his eyes

    Man's affliction is nothing but aspiration

  11. يشوب بالسخط جميل الرضا

    ويمزج الجد لنا بالمزاح

    Dissatisfaction mars the beauty of contentment

    And mixes jest with seriousness for us

  12. يحنُّ للقرب نزيع الهوى

    حنين نوق بالموامي طلاح

    The whimperer of passion yearns for nearness

    With the yearning of a camel bellowing for its mistress

  13. أغيد لم نعدل إلى غادة

    عنه ولا غيداء رود رداح

    I do not swerve toward any other love

    Nor has any other love swerved towards me

  14. مهفهف القد رهيف الحشا

    مهز هز الأعطاف شاكي السلاح

    With swaying gait and slender frame

    Shaking his limbs, complaining of the night

  15. من لي به متشحاً أن مشى

    علق قلبي بمناط الوشاح

    If I could only have him wrap himself

    My heart clung to the fabric of his robe

  16. طوقه الحسن هلال السما

    منعطفاً لكن على الجيد لاح

    Beauty haloes him like the crescent moon

    Visible on his neck, not on his forehead

  17. وقرطت أذنيه للمشتري

    كف بعنقود الثريا اجتراح

    And his ear is adorned as if to entice

    A hand to pluck a cluster of Pleiades

  18. ثم انثنى يرقص قرطيه من

    معقَص جعديه الصبا والمراح

    Then he arches, dancing so his curls

    Leap from his curly youthful locks

  19. يا سعد ما أسعدها ليلة

    نالت بها السعد قريض البطاح

    O happy night that gained good fortune

    And met with success and intimacy

  20. بالجوهري الفرد قد صحَّ ما

    يرويه عنه جوهري الصحاح

    With the unique and virtuous al-Jawhari

    He validates what al-Jawhari documents in the Authentic Collection

  21. فتىً حمى الشرع بأقالامه

    لا بظبي البيض وسمر الرماح

    A young man who protected sacred law with his pens

    Not with the horns of oryx or spears of lances

  22. سل فصحاء العصر تخبرك كم

    ردهم بالقول غير الفصاح

    Ask the eloquent ones of this age-how many

    He returned speechless, however eloquent

  23. يصدق بالقول وكم من فتىً

    أكذب في منطقه من سجاح

    Truthful in word unlike many a young man

    More mendacious in his speech than wailing women

  24. القائل القول ولا منكر

    والفاعل الفعل ولا لحي لاح

    Speaking words without denial

    Acting without timidity or caution

  25. لا يرعوي عن بذل معرفةٍ

    أن أكثر اللاحي المجدُّ اللحاح

    He does not refrain from dispensing knowledge

    Though most questioners seek only captious wrangling

  26. جاءت به أمُّ العلى مفرداً

    عقيمها وهو ابن حي اللقاح

    He was born to a sterile mother unique

    And he the son of the Living Impregnator

  27. فجاء مجبولاً على فطرة

    صيانة العرض ومال مباح

    So he came endowed with the nature

    To preserve honor and what is permissible

  28. لم تعلق الآثام أبراده

    ولا اعتراه نشوان المراح

    Sins did not cling to his tent pegs

    Nor did the fires of passion afflict him

  29. يوماه في الدهر إذا عددا

    يوم ندىً كافٍ ويوم كفاح

    If you count his days in time

    Each day sufficed and was a struggle

  30. غضت له الأعداء أصواتها

    أن أجهر الصوت غداة التلاح

    The enemies muted their voices toward him

    As the loudest voice is muted at daybreak

  31. والليث إن زمجر في غابه

    غضت كلاب الحي منه النباح

    Even if the lion roars in his jungle

    The dogs of the neighborhood mute their barking

  32. يوسع جرحاً بحشا خصمه

    لسانه العضب ويوسي الجراح

    With his biting tongue he enlarges a wound

    To his adversary, exacerbating the gashes

  33. ليس له إلا العلى ديدن

    سجية والكرم المستماح

    He has no habit but nobility

    In character, and generous giving

  34. إن لم يفز قدح لأهل الجدا

    علَّم أهل الجود ضرب القداح

    If the noble do not win a prize

    He teaches the generous to clap their hands

  35. يا ابن النواصي البيض من يعرب

    ذوي المجالي والوجوه الصباح

    O you of white temples and bright faces

    More radiant than dawn however bright it gets

  36. أبيض أن أسفر عن واضح

    غبَّر بالبيض الوجوه الوضاح

    I make plain not to obscure the clear

    I do not darken bright faces however murky they become

  37. يبدو بوجهٍ شرق بالحيا

    فدىً له تلك الوجوه الوقاح

    His face shines with a life

    I ransom those insolent faces for him!

  38. وأريحي راح في طبعه

    أرقّ من طبع نسيم الرياح

    And comfort came easy to his nature

    - Gentler than the nature of the winds

  39. قام إلى المجد فتى حازه

    وكم فتى دون مدى المجد طاح

    A young man who won glory stands

    While countless others fall short of glory’s range

  40. إذا جرى لغاية جامحاً

    لم يثن عنها ثنيه عن جماح

    If he surges forth fiercely to his goal

    He does not divert his course from the objects of his aspiration

  41. ذو خلق عبقٍ زهر الربى

    تدعو إلا حيهلا للنجاح

    Of refined character, the blossom of dignity

    To which its bee is summoned for success

  42. قد هتف الجود بناديهم

    حي على جودهم والفلاح

    Generosity proclaimed him one of its criers

    Hail to their generosity and success!

  43. أكفهم محياً لعافي الورى

    وللأولاة الخصم حتفٌ متاح

    Their palms are life-saving for humankind

    And death-dealing to hostile foes when cries arise

  44. المانعون الضيم عن جارهم

    إذا دعا الداعي وضجَّ الصياح

    They spur on horses dusty from journeying

    Wherever the horizon looms and the day breaks

  45. والمصدرون الخيل شعث الطلى

    حيث أغام الأفق واليوم صاح

    A people who when they had power forgave

    Turning away their gazes from the squint-eyed

  46. قوم إذا ما قدروا أعرضوا

    صفحا وردوا للجفون الصفاح

    When the horizon shuddered from the cold

    The rainclouds did not cease to pour down heavily

  47. إذا اقشعرَّ الأفق من شتوة

    ما برحت غبراء إذ لا براح

    Suckling the clouds despite its stinginess

    If the grasping hands of askers fell short

  48. أرضعت السحب باخلافها

    ان بخلت منه الضروب الشحاح
