1. شدت سحراً بالسنة فصاح

    حمائم إيك معتلج البطاح

    At dawn the doves sang with joy

    Among the overflowing valleys.

  2. فقرطت المسامع بالتهاني

    هواتف بالغدو وبالرواح

    The ears were delighted with congratulations,

    Greetings at dawn and in the evening.

  3. فغنِّ ما صفالك أن تغنّي

    فدىً لك كل فتخاء الجناح

    So enjoy your youth singing,

    You are the goal of every wing’s desire.

  4. شدت بحمى الغري مبشرات

    ببرء فتى المكارم والسماح

    At the fever of love they sang glad tidings

    Of the generosity and forgiveness of the noble youth.

  5. لقد شاء الاله بأن يراه

    زعيم ذوي المفاخر والنجاح

    God has willed that we see him

    As the leader of the glorious and successful.

  6. فخوَّلهُ السلامة وارتضاه

    أمام هدى لنهي واقتراح

    He granted him wellbeing and chose him

    To guide with advice and suggestion.

  7. وقدَّر أن يدوم فردَّ عنه

    سهام حوادث القدر المتاح

    And destined that he be protected

    From the arrows of changing fate.

  8. غداة جلى لنا الأفراح يوم

    وسيم الوجه جوال الوشاح

    The day joy was revealed to us

    Was the beautiful, poetry reciting face.

  9. وعاطتنا المسرة فيه راحاً

    كما عاطى النديم كؤوس راح

    And it brought us pleasure and comfort

    Like cups of wine do for boon companions.

  10. فقمنا فيه نبتدر الأماني

    بدار الخمس للماء القراح

    So we hurried to fulfill our wishes

    In the abode of music and drinking.

  11. فيا ابن المجتني ثمر المعالي

    ولو من بين مشتبك الرماح

    O son of the prestigious, fruit of glory,

    Even if among the tangled spears.

  12. ويا ابن النازلين هضاب عز

    على الجوزاء مشرفة النواحي

    O son of the eminent, pride

    Of glory overlooking the prairies.

  13. وكل منيفة الطرفين أرخت

    ذوائبها على هام الضراح

    Every beautiful-eyed gazelle

    Let down her braids over the meadow.

  14. تركت نواظر الحساد تهمي

    بفيض دم كأفواه الجراح

    Leaving the envious eyes watering

    With the plentitude like mouths of wounds.

  15. لئن مرضت بصحتك الأعادي

    فجودك طب أنفسها الشحاح

    If your enemies fell ill over your healthiness

    Your generosity is a cure for the miserly souls.

  16. حملت على المنايا السود عضباً

    تفلُّ صفاحه بيض الصفاح

    You carried anger at death

    Whose darkness dispels the whiteness of dawn.

  17. فلا أعطى الزمان لها مناها

    فرب فساد قومٍ من صلاح

    So time did not grant it its purpose,

    Great good comes from people's ruin.

  18. وكم لبنانِ مجدك من يراع

    لما حطَّته كف الدهر ماحي

    How much glory your glory cultivated

    When the hand of fate reaped it.

  19. وحيث غدالك القِدحُ المعلى

    فلم تقمر لعمر أبي قداحي

    And where your eminent chalice was brought

    No full moon ever rose, by my father's life.

  20. ونلتُ من المسرَّة منك مالو

    اردتُ به لطرتُ بلا جناح

    And I gained from your joy what I wished

    To dissipate without wings.

  21. فخذ بيدي وفضل قياد رقّي

    فما لسواك منقادٌ جماحي

    So take my hand and prefer my guidance,

    None guided flies but you.

  22. أعزَّ وأنني الرقُّ المفدّى

    فلا تقبل بذلّي قول لاح

    Most generous and gentle is the paid ransom,

    So do not accept my inadequate words.

  23. قصرتُ على مديحك نظم شعري

    فطال نظام شعري وامتداحي

    I limited my poetry in your praise

    Prolonging the rhyme of my eulogy.

  24. فيا ترب العلوم ومن إذا ما

    دُعي للعلم بادر بارتياح

    O land of knowledge, who when

    Called to knowledge rushes cheerfully.

  25. لقد قلدتَ جيد العلم عقداً

    يروق نضارة المقل الصحاح

    You wore the necklace of knowledge

    Pleasing to the unblemished sage.

  26. إذا العلماء اقعدها كفاح

    لنيل العلم قمتَ بلا كفاح

    When scholars sat in struggle

    To gain knowledge, you rose without struggle.

  27. فحزتَ الجل منه بلا سلاحٍ

    فكيف وأنت شاكٍ بالسلاح

    And so you took the best of it without a weapon,

    So how when you have weapons?

  28. وعاد العيد فيك قريرَ عين

    يرنِّح عطفه نشوان صاحي

    And the holiday returned in you, delight of the eye,

    Comforting with its charm the wakeful companion,

  29. بِوجه يستهل البشر منه

    تبلج مثل شارقة الصباح

    With a face that brings joy to people,

    Radiant like the dawning sky.

  30. أعاد به الهوى ايام لهوٍ

    اعدن عليَّ أيام الملاح

    Through it love returned days of bliss

    Recalling to me days of smooth sailing.

  31. ولا برحت بناديه الأماني

    تنادي الركب حيَّ على الفلاح

    And hopes did not stop calling in its name,

    Calling the travelers, forward to prosperity!

  32. توءم رباعك الوفاد غرنى

    غداة الجدب بالأبل الطلاح

    Your hospitality filled the guests with joy

    After drought, with ripened fruits.

  33. قواصد خير من ركب المطايا

    وأندى العالمين بطون راح

    Caravans of benevolence, better than horses

    And more generous than two humps of a camel.

  34. تحيي منه ذا وجهٍ حيي

    إذا ما صدَّ ذو الوجه الوقاح

    Bringing to life, through it, one with a living face

    When the shameless face repels.
