1. قد رق بابن شبيب كأس تشبيبي

    حتى مزجت هوى الشبان بالشيب

    The cup of youth has intoxicated Ibn Shubaib,

    So that the passion of youths is mixed with grey hair.

  2. كم بيض الشعر من فوديه ناصيةً

    شابت باغيد داجي الشعر غربيب

    How much white hair has sprouted from his temple,

    While the black hair on his forehead is still lush.

  3. وشب فيه زهيراً في صناعته

    ككوكب شرقٍ في الأفق مشبوب

    In it has grown a Zuhair in his craft,

    Like the shining star in the clear horizon.

  4. يحدو بسرح قوافيه مرجعة

    حدو المرهفة العيش المطاريب

    He flows spontaneously with his eloquent verses,

    Flowing like the delicate, enjoyable life.

  5. من كل حرف كحرف هاض جانبها

    من خلف طرف طموح الطرف مجنوب

    From every letter, a burning desire from its side,

    From behind a flirtatious eye, the eye is amorous.

  6. قد أنجبت فيه في الأعراب منجبة

    أصلاً فأعرب عن طبع الأعاريب

    It has brought forth in the nomads a real genius,

    Whose nature expressed the ways of nomads.

  7. غذته من لبن الحيين رغوته

    حي اللقاح وحي المنزل الموبي

    It was nourished on the milk of the virtuous, its nourishment

    Full of life and home of the beloved abode.

  8. الغي الحضارة إذ حنت بداوته

    فهل سمعت لشعر حنة النيب

    It ignored civilization when it leaned to simple life,

    Did you ever hear poetry with charm like a prophet?

  9. ينسل مختطفاً أقصى شوارده

    مثل انسلال رصيد الثلة الذيب

    It flows smoothly, capturing its farthest ideas,

    Like the flowing of a flock of deer.

  10. ما صوب الفكر إلا ريث صعده

    فالفكر منه بتصعيد وتصويب

    Thought only ascends straight,

    For thought with him is by elevation and correction.

  11. يفيض بالثاقب الرأي المصيب ذكا

    حتى يصوب بدر غير مثقوب

    It overflows with accurate, penetrating intellect,

    Until it hits the target flawlessly.

  12. منمنم زهر الألفاظ يرقمها

    رقم الخميلة في طرز وترتيب

    It hums the flowers of words, arranging them

    In the style of al-Khalil in composition and order.

  13. للشعر حسنان لا تعدوهما جهة

    حسن بمعنى وحسن بالأساليب

    Poetry has two beauties, no aspect exceeds them:

    Beauty in meaning and beauty in style.

  14. مقوض الهم والحوبا مطنبة

    فلا يزال بتقويض وتطنيب

    It destroys anxiety and is stronglyImpactful,

    It never stops destroying and impacting.

  15. سلس القياد وفيه بعد عجرفة

    لا يسهل الصعب إلا بالمصاعيب

    Smooth in leadership, yet still bold,

    Only hardship can make the difficult easy.

  16. قد يخشن المرء بعد اللين جانبه

    فالمرء ليس بمأكول ومشورب

    One may coarsen after gentleness his side,

    For man is not edible or potable.

  17. يفتر عن خلق ذاك يفوه به

    طيب النسيم كماء الورد مسكوب

    He slackens from creating then inspires with it,

    Like the scent of roses poured out.

  18. قد حمل الطيب طيباً من خلائقه

    فرحت أنشق طيباً منه في الطيب

    He carried fragrance from his traits,

    I was delighted to pluck fragrance from his fragrance.

  19. زين الأخلاء إن جادوا وإن بخلوا

    محب صدق تزيا زيَّ محبوب

    He adorns companions whether generous or stingy,

    A lover of truth, his adornment befits the beloved.

  20. وحسب جعفر تلقيباً وتسمية

    لم يحوها البحر باسم أو بتلقيب

    Sufficient for Jaafar is the name and title,

    The sea did not contain it in name or title.

  21. اللابس النثرة الحصدا من الزرد الن

    نثر المشرد والنظم والأساريب

    Wearing prose and harvesting poetry from gems,

    Scattering rhymed prose, poetry, and meters.

  22. إذا اعتلى صهوة الاداب مزدهياً

    بذَّ التخايل بالخيل السراحيب

    When he rode high on the horse of literature boastfully,

    He drove it with imaginings and steeds.

  23. يصيح في سرجها هب كلما انقعطت

    حتى يواصل الهوباً بألهوب

    He yells urging whenever it slows,

    Until he connects yells with flames.

  24. جاري جواد فجدا في السباق معا

    عنقاً لعنق وعرقوباً لعرقوب

    Racing his spirited steed, excelling in the race,

    Neck to neck and heel to heel.

  25. إن لم يجز لهما في الحال نصبهما

    قاضٍ قضى عنتاً في خفض منصوب

    If the two together do not achieve their goal there,

    A judge has judged a delay in lowering the upright.

  26. لا يعدم الضرم البازي شيمته

    فوق المراقيب أو دون المراقيب

    The shining white horse never lacks his merit,

    Above or below the platforms.

  27. إن كان قد اصحباني بعض ودهما

    أني اصطفيتهما من كل مصحوب

    If they have accompanied me with some affection,

    I have chosen them over all company.

  28. أو كنتُ أطلب شيئاً دون ما أربي

    فقد ظفرت بشيء فوق مطولبي

    Or I was seeking something less than I yearned,

    Yet I obtained something beyond my request.

  29. ما كل من صحب الإخوان جربها

    لا يعرف الخل إلّا بالتجاريب

    Not all who tasted companionship experienced it,

    One knows vinegar only through experience.

  30. أو كل من طلب لآداب أحرزها

    إن الأديب لمشروط بتأديب

    Nor everyone who sought knowledge obtained it,

    The learned is conditioned by discipline.

  31. لم يبق حقّاً وراء الظهر باطنه

    ولم يلذ بين تليق الأكاذيب

    No truth remains behind his back inwardly,

    He enjoys no lies between what is proper.

  32. شعاره الصدق في جد وفي هزل

    في وصف كل نقي الخد رعبيب

    His motto is honesty both in serious and jest,

    In describing the immaculate, holy cheek.

  33. يعوم في جدولي ماءين زورقه

    ماء الشباب بماء الحسن مقطوب

    His boat sails in my two streams,

    The water of youth and the water of beauty combined.

  34. لم يحتجب منه وجه بالجمال بدا

    ورب وجه لقبح فيه محجوب

    No face was veiled from him by beauty, his appears

    While many a face is veiled for ugliness.

  35. تحلَّ عقدة صدر الصب لبته

    إن حل أزرار أطراف الجلابيب

    The knot in the young man's chest dissolves for him,

    If the buttons of robes are unbuttoned.

  36. يقودني غنج عينيه بلا قرن

    ذاك الغزيل مقرون الحواجيب

    The bend of his eyes leads me without blinking,

    Like that gazelle paired with eyelids.

  37. يشير إما بعين أو بحاجبها

    إليَّ أو ببنان منه مخضوب

    It gestures to me either with an eye or its brow,

    Or with its dyed fingers toward me.

  38. يشوب بالعذب تعذيبي وديدنه

    يشوب بالعذب عذب الريق تعذيبي

    He flavors my torment with sweetness, and his way,

    To flavor sweetness with the sweetness of saliva, my torment.

  39. يا يوسف نفحتني بعد غيبته

    ريح القميص سرت وهنا ليعقوب

    O Yusuf, after his absence his shirt's scent blew,

    It flowed and reached me like the wind brought Ya’qoub.
