أشاقك من أفق العراق لوامع

بروق تعالت أو نجوم طوالع

I longed for you from Iraq's bright horizon,

Flashes of lightning or rising stars,

وقبلك كم هيجن أشجان وامق

فسالت على آثارهن المدامع

And before you how many passions stirred and weeping eyes,

Their tears flowing on their vestiges.

أشاعر أرض الرافدين ترفقا

على مهج قد أذهلتها الصوادع

I feel the land of the two rivers is gentle,

To a soul that clamors have left bewildered,

ألست ترى الارزاء فينا مقيمة

وأسيافها فيمن نحب قواطع

Do you not see the cedars still standing in us

And their swords in those we love pitiless?

وان الافاعي الرقش تسرى سمومها

بأمتنا والكل غاف وهاجع

And that creeping adders spread their poisons

In our nation while all slumber unaware,

فكن محسنا بالعذر واعلم باننى

صديقك حقا ان قلبك شافع

So be forgiving I implore, and know that I

Am truly your friend if your heart will advocate.
