1. نظمت لكم عهداً فلا بد من عهد

    يكون إِلى قاض ووال على الجند

    I have made a covenant with you, so a covenant is inevitable

    To a judge and a governor over the army

  2. ليحمل كل ما تحمل مشفقاً

    ويعلم أن اللّه لا غيره قصدي

    To bear anything you bear compassionately

    And know that my only intention is God

  3. فمن منهما خان الاله عزلته

    ومن لم يخن عهد اشتددت به عضدي

    So whoever of them breaks the covenant of God, I will depose him

    And whoever does not break the covenant, I will strengthen him

  4. وما أنا إلا ناقض العهد خائن

    إذا لم أزل من خان ممن ولي عهدي

    I am nothing but a breaker of covenants and a traitor

    If I do not always remain with those who were loyal to my covenant

  5. على الناس عصياني واسقاط حرمتي

    إِذا لم أطع ذا العرش أو لم أصن عقدي

    It is the people's disobedience and disregard for me

    If I do not obey the Owner of the Throne or protect my religion

  6. فيا أيها القاضي نصبت لمعظم

    من الأمر فانظر ما تعيد وما تبدي

    So O judge, I have established for you a great

    Position, so consider what you should promise and initiate

  7. نصبت ومن ينصب لحكم القضا فقد

    تنصب للبلوى على خطر أُد

    And whoever appoints judgment and ruling exposes himself

    To affliction and danger and harm

  8. حملت أمانات فكن من حسابها

    على وجل واذكر مناقشة الفرد

    You have taken on trusts, so be fearful and remember

    The reckoning of individuals

  9. فإن السما والأرض أعرضن خيفة

    وأشفقن من حمل الأمانة والعهد

    The heavens and earth shrank away in fear

    And were apprehensive of bearing the trust and covenant

  10. فخذ بكتاب اللّه واقتد بأحمد

    وأتباعه ترشد وترشد إلى الرشد

    So take the Book of God and follow Ahmad

    And his followers; you will be guided and guided to righteousness

  11. وما غاب من علم عليك فأنهه

    إِلى العلما باللّه باللّه فاستهد

    Whatever knowledge escapes you, rush towards

    Knowledge through God, through God seek guidance

  12. ولا تقض إّلا عن فراغ وخلوة

    عن الملل المذموم والغضب المردي

    And judge only when free and secluded

    From condemned boredom and angry judgment

  13. وواس بعينيك الخصوم ملاحظاً

    وساو سواءً مجلس الحر والعبد

    Observe the litigants closely with your eyes

    And treat the freeman and slave equally in court

  14. وأطرق إِذا جاءتك حجة مدَّع

    قليلاً كذا اطرق إِذا احتج ذو الجحد

    When an unreasonable claim comes to you, be silent

    For a little while—yes, be silent when the obstinate man makes his claim

  15. ولا تتهم خصماً لخصم ولو بدا

    لو همك وهم من سديد ولا وغد

    And do not accuse a litigant on account of his opponent even if

    Your suspicion and his suspicion seem valid and future

  16. ودع للنسا وقتاً يصلنك عنده

    ليخصمن أو يشكين ما نلن من وجد

    And set aside time for women to bring claims to you

    Or complain of sorrow they have suffered

  17. لأنك لا تقضي على الخود أو ترى

    ثقاتك أو عيناك رقرقة الخد

    For you do not judge based on expression or your trusted ones

    Seeing the fluttering eyelids and cheek

  18. وعدّل من الناس الثقات الذين لا

    تشكّ ولا ترتاب فيهم لدى الشهد

    And do not let them walk among people with their feet

    So anklets and jewels clash against jewels

  19. ولا تقبلن ما دمت تحت قضائه

    هدية مهد لم يكن قبلها يهدي

    And say to the youthful slave to be humble and submissive

    To his master and serve him properly

  20. وارفع إلى الوالي الذي بان أمره

    ببعض الخطايا بالغاً بالغ الجهد

    Until the whitening dawn when the sun rises

    And after this, free from service, he will be comfortable

  21. ولا تقبلن من متْهم تهمة على

    فتى قط لم يتهم وأقبل على الضد

    And for the day let sustenance equal

    That of the buyer up to a quarter ṣāʿ—no distress

  22. وبالسجن والتقييد كل متهم

    يعاقب لا بالسيف يغشى ولا القد

    Oblige the animal owners to water them

    Day and night, then proclaim with the prod

  23. على قدر ضعف المتهمين وغلظهم

    وقدر الجنايا فاجتهد غاية الجهد

    Wherever the journey takes you, let your buyers

    Accompany you even if they are from the city

  24. وبالسجن من بالقتل اتهم أربعاً

    سنيناً وإِلاَّ عشر قالوا مع الصفد

    And take God’s right from every Muslim

    Based on the Sunna of the Ummī in collecting and sending out

  25. وأما باقرار واشهاد عدل

    فيؤخذ بالتعزير والحق والحد

    Half the agricultural tithe, and from trees if irrigated

    By waterwheels; otherwise a tenth of what was produced with toil

  26. ولا يصل التعزيز حداً وجلده

    خفيف بسوط قدَّ من لين الجلد

    If one waters it and another, take for one

    A tenth, and for the other a half by proper division

  27. ويا أيها الوالي جعلتك والياً

    على طاعة الرحمن والمصطفى النجدي

    When it reaches—by their deeds—two hundred ṣāʿ by

    Three hundred in partnership or alone

  28. وللأمر بالمعروف والنفي للأذى

    واخماد نار الجور والقمع للضد

    If it does not reach this, and belongs to only

    One apart from partnership, exceeding partnership by measure

  29. وتر الهدايا والتجارة إِنها

    تبثُّ على الوالي أسى العزل والطرد

    So take from him God’s due in this and that, when

    He reaches ninety days after the harvest

  30. ولطفك والاحسان بالناس كن بهم

    رؤوفاً لطيفاً بالمشيب وبالمرد

    And whoever concludes a deal over fruits with his bride

    Take from them both like an individual—understand, O brother of Azd

  31. فإن ريباً اتهمت في دار ريبة

    فلا تدع السّفاه تدخل بالهدّ

    Whatever they designate for God from it satisfies Him

    And none has a right to it after having given the choice

  32. ولكن إِذا شاعت فقل أنا داخل

    عليكم وقدم في الثقات النهى النجد

    A tenth from presses—leave it in them for whoever

    Owns the sword, but tell the grower to pay

  33. صن الناس أدبهم عن الخصم والأذى

    وعن موقف التهمات باللين والمقد

    And do not demand one commodity for another commodity, for whatever

    Differs in name is a different commodity by measure

  34. وعن لطم خد واحتزاز ذوائب

    وعن شق جيب والصراخ لدى الكمد

    Except for dates, since dates are exchanged

    For dates like grapes, yellow for black

  35. مر الخود أن تدني الجلابيب بعد أن

    تذير خماريها على الجيب والجعد

    Whoever sells palm trees after they bloom, the remaining

    Number with him is liable for zakāt if he intends sale

  36. لكي لا ترى عين من الخودريبة

    سوى الكحل والخاتام للخطّ والمدّ

    And you have no due in fruits that shrivel

    And are not eaten after withering in the period

  37. ولا تضربن بين الأنام برجلها

    فيصطخب الخلخال والعقد بالعقد

    So permit them—the fresh dates—and leave them and their fresh eating be

    And what they ate as ripe, leave the people comfortable

  38. وقل للفتى المملوك يخضع ويستكن

    لمولاه وليخده بالعرف ما أغدي

    Twenty mithqāls are the minimum liable for zakāt

    If a year passes with its fourth and a mithqāl

  39. إِلى الشفق المبيضّ ما طلع الضيا

    ومن بعد ذا عن خدمة فهو في رغد

    Of two hundred dirhams of silver

    Take five—a quarter tithe, O brother of Saʿd

  40. ولليوم يعطى قوته قوت شارىء

    إلى ربع صاع ربع صاع بلا نكد

    You see half a mithqāl equals five dirhams

    So reckon this against that and strive

  41. وتلزم أرباب الدواب حدوثها

    نهاراً وليلاً بعد يعلن بالزند

    And if this does not equal that, and together

    They complete a minimum, estimate them equally in cash

  42. وحيث عناك القصر فليقصر الذي

    يسايرك الشاري وإِن كان بالبلد

    And whatever they extract from their two mines

    Pay zakāt on a fifth of the minimum necessarily

  43. وتقبض حق اللّه من كل مسلم

    على سنة الأميّ في القيض والبرد

    And take a quarter tithe from the women’s ruses

    If they reach the minimum concerning bodies

  44. من الزرع نصف العشر والغرس إِن سقي

    بغرب وإِلاَّ عشر ما اقتات ذو الكد

    And do not break the anklets and necklaces of women

    Harmfully when women ransom themselves with cash

  45. فإن يسقه هذا وذا فانتزع لذا

    عشيراً وذا نصفاً على الحسب والعد

    The same for whatever traders exchange for profit

    If it completes a minimum, the dirham value by promise

  46. إِذا تم بالأعمال عن صاع أحمد

    ثلاث مئين بالشراكة والوحد

    You have no right in what they store of their fruits

    If it does not mix with circulating goods

  47. فإن هي لم تبلغ وكان لواحد

    سوى الشرك زرع يفضل الشرك للحد

    Whatever a father possesses in his house of his son’s property

    Is mixed, even if it remains with the lion

  48. فخذ منه حق اللّه في ذا وذا إذا

    تدارك في تسعين يوماً عن الحصد

    The property of orphans—pay its zakāt, or what

    Comes to them through inheritance before dividing in Dhuʾl-Qiʿda

  49. ومن فاوضته في الثمار عروسه

    فخذ منهما كالفرد خذ يا أخا الأزد

    Whoever has money to pay his debt

    Let him pay it if he wishes, then take the due of the Majestic One

  50. وما أطعما للّه منها فهي به

    توفي وما في ذاك حق لذي حصد

    For every loan hoped to be repaid

    You have a right, so suppress playfulness with seriousness

  51. وعشر الصوافي دعه فيها لمن نضا

    له السيف لكن قل لزارعها أدّ

    And assess principal in every deferred payment

    If you do not find debt, even if it comes with affliction

  52. ولا تحملن جنساً بجنس فكلما

    تباين باسم فهو جنس على الند

    Whatever the ground hides or goes

    For years—so take the years’ dues when found

  53. سوى النخل إِن النخل يحملن بعضه

    على بعضه كالكرم صفراً بمسود

    Every minimum liable, pay its zakāt for a year

    With what increased, near or far, for all time

  54. ومن باع نخلاً بعد زهو فزك ما

    بقى عنده إِن بالمخرج القصد

    Do not blame the eminent man you suspect

    Stinginess, miserliness, envy, and hatred

  55. ومالك غرم في ثمار تهلَّكت

    ولما تُكل بعد اليبوسة بالمد

    A delegation has come from Egypt; our ruling

    Does not apply to them, so enrich the palms and refrain from the delegation

  56. ففي البسر ترخيض فدعهم وبسرهم

    وما أكلوا رطباً دع القوم في رغد

    And only collect what you protected and what

    Your months contained—do not expose more, then turn away

  57. وعشرين مثقالاً نصاباً فزكها

    إذا حال حول ربع معشارها أد

    As for zakāt on grazing livestock and its judgment

    Among camels that inhabited Junud’s meadows

  58. ومن مأتين من دراهم فضة

    فخذ خمسة ربع العشير أخا سعد

    For every five, or exceeding four

    Up to twenty-four after a year, a sheep, O Abu Nuʿaym

  59. ترى نصف مثقال بخمسة وضّح

    دراهم فاحمل ذا على ذاك واستجد

    For five and twenty, a one-year-old she-camel

    That has birthed; and a two-year-old male in counting them

  60. وإن لم يصل هذا وهذا وأجمعا

    معافي نصاب كنّ بالجنس في النقد

    for redemption

    And eleven more—so a two-year-old female camel

  61. وما عالجوا بالنار من معدنيهما

    فزكّه من خمس النصاب بلابد

    For five in ninety, with the noble and young

    So for six after forty, a three-year-old female camel

  62. وتأخذ ربع العشر من حيلة النسا

    إذا بلغت حد النصاب على الجسد

    To sixty in number in ravines and elevated places

    But from sixty-one ending

  63. ولا تكسرن خلخال خود وطوقها

    ضراراً إِذا ما الخود بالنقد تستفدي

    At seventy-five take a mature camel

    Your due from seventy-six is two

  64. كذا كلما تحوي التجار لمتجر

    وتم نصاباً قيمة النقد في الوعد

    One-year-old she-camels up to ninety—so take guidance that you may be guided

    Ninety-one, so a right and an Uqiya doe

  65. ولا حق فيما أحرزوا من ثمارهم

    إِذا هي لم تخلط على المتجر الكسدي

    Female up to one hundred, O wild cow

    As for three two-year-olds, they are for

  66. وكل أب في حجره ابن فماله

    ومال ابنه خلط ولو كان بالسد

    Thirty over ninety-one in the summits

    After them, if they increase by ten, an Uqiya doe

  67. ومال اليتامى زكّ أو ما لحقته

    من الارث لم يقسم بشهر كذي القعدة

    For fifty or, for forty, an Azd daughter

    And add sheep if single females differ

  68. ومن كان في كفيه مال لدينه

    فيقضيه إن شا ثم خذ حق ذي المجد

    Otherwise, leave them and add sheep and ready yourself

    Thus, sheep are liable for one-sixth where a camel

  69. وفي كل دين يرتجيه مدينه

    لربك حقّ فاقمع الهزل بالجد

    Is mature, and two sheep equal a right and measure

    A Labun daughter equals two sheep in the same way

  70. وتحسب رأس المال في كل مسلف

    إِذا لم تجد ديناً ولو حل مع مكد

    The female Bāqir camel equals a mature cow

    Leave aside young males and lambs—so leave

  71. وما غيبته الأرض أو كان ذاهباً

    سنيناً فخذ حق السنين لدى الوجد

    Factors for the slender and firm

    For forty, a sheep; its zakāt is a sheep

  72. وكل نصاب تم زكّ لحوله

    بما ازداد في قرب وبعد مدى الأبد

    Up to sixty in two hundred in fertility and effort

    If a sheep comes out, then two sheep is its duty

  73. ولا لوم إن أحلفت في حق ذي العلا

    أخا تهمة بالشح والكد والحسد

    Up to two hundred sheep, white and red

    Of two hundred sheep plus one that multiplies

  74. ووفد أتى من مصر لم يجر حكمنا

    عليه فأثرى كفّ عن معشر الوفد

    To three hundred take three—steady yourself!

    And take four from four hundred, then after it

  75. ولا تجب إِلا ما حميت وما حوت

    شهورك لا تعرض سوى ذاك وارتد

    Take singles from every hundred that appears

    Do not gather what was separate, nor

  76. وأما زكات السائمات وحكمها

    من الابل اللاتي حوتها ظبى جند

    Separate their collection, for blame or praise

    What the camels gathered for milking, pay its zakāt

  77. فمع كل خمس أو تجاوز أربعاً

    وعشرين بعد الحول شاة أبا نهد

    As for the grazing sheep, count them!

    Do not take flawed, thin, and avoid

  78. وفي الخمس والعشرين فابنة ماخض

    وابن لبون عند عد مْكها تفدي

    Their best—seek like you seek choice

    The owner of property divides it in half

  79. وإن زدن أحدى عشر فابنة ملبن

    إلى الخمس في تسع مع الطرف والتلد

    Then chooses one half, then carefully consider

    When driving a sheep, likewise drive a sheep

  80. ففي الست بعد الأربعين طروقة

    إلى مبلغ الستين في الغور والنجد

    So a sheep for a sheep, or it suffices and is renewed

    If the protected one brings out a male, leave it be

  81. ولكنّ من احدى وستين ينتهي

    إلى الخمس والسبعين خذ جذعة الوحد

    And if he hides the unknown, excuse the individual

    And prevent harm from those who harm him, for we

  82. وحقك من ست وسبعين فابنتا

    لبون إِلى التسعين فاهتد لكى تهتدي

    Have a pact with him—so proceed to it gently

    Cut his forelock, invert his stirrups

  83. وإحدى وتسعين فحقُّ وحقة

    اناث إلى العشرين في المائة النهد

    Tie his waist with belt and make him ride behind

    Let no female slaves or servant women of a submitting Muslim

  84. وأما ثلاث من لبون فهن عن

    ثلاثين مع إحدى وتسعين في صعد

    Ride on a saddle—prohibit evil deeds!

    Whatever livestock and farms we buy

  85. ومن بعدها إن زدن عشراً فحقة

    لخمسين أو في الأربعين ابنة الزند

    Are liable for zakāt just as they used to be, undiminished

    Their head tax—not on children or women

  86. وزد غنماً في بكرة إن تفاضلت

    وإلاّ فدعها وازدد الشاة واعتد

    Or the elderly, insane, chronically ill, and slaves—

    The middle ones are two, and the ruqiyya a dirham

  87. كذا العين تزكى سدسة حيث جذعة

    من الابل والربعان كالحق والسبد

    The strongest four a month you send out!

    From an Arab of the People of the Two Books, take double

  88. وبنت لبون كالثنية هكذا

    كبنت مخاض جذعة الباقر القمد

    What is on the Muslims. Take and refrain from head tax!

    If the protected one fights, seize him and capture what

  89. وترك الفصال والعجاجيل فاتركن

    عواملها ذات القتوبة والشد

    Is born to him except what an Arab begets

    Whatever is readied for defense in their homes or they throw

  90. وفي الأربعين الشاة شاة زكاتها

    إلى اثنين في الستين في الخصب والجد

    At you from them an arrow—demolish it like a coward!

    And in case of their refusal, descent at their homes and date palms

  91. فإن طلعت شاة فشاتان فرضها

    إلى مائتي شاة من البيض والرمد

    Cutting down branches along with the lead camel drivers

    Do not kill children, the simple-minded—leave them be!

  92. ومن مائتي شاة وشاة نمت إلى

    ثلاث ميئين خذ ثلاثك واصطد

    Nor women unless they actually fight with enmity

    Beware of fires! Do not burn people with them

  93. وخذ أربعاً من أربع ثم بعدها

    فخذ فردة من كل ما مائة تبدي

    Rush to extinguish the flame and extinguish!

    Proclaim this openly, then whoever disobeys

  94. ولا تجمعن ما كان مفترقاً ولا

    تفرق لها جمعاً لذم ولا حمد

    Seize him for what he falsely claimed and did intentionally

    As for punishments endangering lives, return them

  95. وما جمع الأعطان للحلب زكه

    وما ساير الرعيان من سخلها عدّ

    To me, for the adjustment of ḥudūd is my prerogative

    Take them as rules—I have composed them

  96. ولا تأخذ المعيوب والسخل واجتنب

    كرائمها واطلب كطلبك للرفد

    Giving life to those before me, light to those after me

    I have kindled without tiring so its judgment appears

  97. ويقسم رب المال شطرين ماله

    فيختار شطراً ثم في التأني يستدي

    With justice—war material even for my line

    “In opposition, O brother of Layla, Salma, and Fatim

  98. إذا قاد شاة قدت شاة كشاته

    فشاة بشاة أو توفى وتستجدي

    Juml, Mayya, or Bathina and Daʿd...”

    I hope for forgiveness and position

  99. وإن أظهر الذمي ذكراً فأطفه

    وإن يستتر بالنكر فاحلم عن الفرد

    To which the Chosen One comes—Garden of Eternity

    May God bless him whenever a gleam shines

  100. وكفّ أذى المؤذين عنه فإن بنا

    له بيعة فاعمد إِلى تلك بالهد

    Upon another gleam or thunder upon thunder

  101. وجزّ نواصيه وقلب شراكه

    وحزمه بالزنار واعمله بالترد

  102. ولا يركبن في السرج وازجره عن شرا

    عبيد واماء من المسلم المهدي

  103. وما ابتاع من أنعامنا وحروثنا

    فتزكى كما قد كان تزكى بلا صد

  104. وجزيتهم إلاَّ على الطفل والنسا

    أو الزُّمنا والبهم والغيد والعبد

  105. فأوسطهم اثنان والدرن درهم

    ودهقانهم في الشهر أربعة تسدي

  106. وعن عربي أهل الكتابين ضعف ما

    على المسلمين اقبض وعن جزية فاهد

  107. وإن حارب الذمي فاسلبه واسب ما

    تولّد إلاَّ ما نمى يعرب جدي

  108. ومستكمل الاسلام ما لم يتب فما

    إذا ارتدَّ للاشراك في قتل مرتد

  109. فإن كنت يوماً غازياً أو محارباً

    لقوم فشمّر للضراغمة الأسد

  110. وقدَّم جواسيساً وأخرّ كمثلهم

    وراك لأن الحزم من شيمة الجلد

  111. ولا ترقدن ليلاً وجيشك مهمل

    بلا حرس أياك من غمرة الرقد

  112. وصن عن حروث المسلمين وزرعهم

    جيوشك منها واقطع الأرض بالجد

  113. فحتى إذا أعلام أعدائكم بدت

    وصفت لكم بالبيض والذبل الملد

  114. فحثوا المطايا عنكم وتنصلوا

    وصفو لهم بالبيض والشرب الجرد

  115. ولا تجعلن في الصدر إلا أشاوشاً

    يرون ارتشاف الموت في الروع كالشهد

  116. واعط ذوي الأخطار كل غضنفر

    لواء ووصِّ الكل بالشد واشتد

  117. وسيروا إلى الهيجا رويداً فإنما

    يسار إلى الهيجا رويداً من البعد

  118. ولا تبسطوا كفّاً لديهم وقدموا

    دعاء فإن أدو فودّ على ود

  119. وإن صدفوا عن منهج الحق أو بدوا

    قتالاً فقد طاب الضراب لمعتد

  120. هناك أخي إن كنت ممن لعهده

    تمام أجزت السيف في الهمام لا الغمد

  121. هنالك كن كالليث يفترس العدا

    وكالمسرجي النار والبازي المقد

  122. هناك فمن منكم حوى سلب العدا

    فذاك له قبل انهزام العدا الند

  123. هنالك لا تحمد أخاً لك لم يرد

    ورودك تحت النقع بالمرهف الهندي

  124. ومما غنمتم خمس سدس لذي العلا

    وللمصطفى يشرى به عدة العد

  125. ونصف خميسي شطر شطر سديسه

    لمن من قرابات النبيء على القصد

  126. وتسعة أعشار لمسغب جائع

    ولابن سبيل واليتيم أخي الفقد

  127. وباقيه يعطى فارساً ضعف راجل

    وترصخ للملوك والخود والولد

  128. وقسمة أخماس الغنائم مثلها

    وتقسم أخماس الركاز إذا تدي

  129. ولا تغنمن مال المصلين واستعن

    بأوزارهم إن حاربوك وعدرد

  130. ومن مهم ولي وخفت رجوعه

    فطاير حشاه للخوامع والفهد

  131. وما لم تنل إلا بسيفك فاعقرن

    من الخيل والكرعان كن كالصفا الصلد

  132. وما امتنعوا فيه من الدور أو رموا

    إليك بسهم منه فاهدمه كالثرد

  133. وحلّ بباب القوم بعد امتناعهم

    وقطع مواداً والنخيل مع الرصد

  134. ولا تقتلن طفلاً ولا البهم دعهم

    ولا الخود إلا أن تعين أولى الحقد

  135. وإياك والنيران لا تحرقن بها

    أناساً وعاجل شعلة النار بالخمد

  136. تنادي بهذا ظاهراً ثم من عصى

    فخذه بما أجنى وأحدث عن عمد

  137. وخاتم من لم يعد منكم وخفه

    حمى الحرب عنه ينزعان إذا أردي

  138. وبرنسة إن زايلته عمامة

    ويدرج في توبين والدم واللحد

  139. فهاتا وصاتي إن أخذت بأمرها

    وإلاَّ عراك الأخذ في النفس والسبد

  140. وإني ولما اجعل الحكم والقضا

    إليك ولا أمر العقوبة والجلد

  141. فما كان من خصم بحق وتهمة

    فصره إلى القاضي الرضي الراسخ العد

  142. وأما الحدود المخطرات فردها

    إلىَّ فإنا لحد تقويمه عندي

  143. وخذها كحلي الغانيات نظمتها

    حياة لمن قبلي ونوراً لمن بعدي

  144. قدحت ولم أسأم ليظهر حكمها

    مع العدل زند الحرب حتى ورى زندي

  145. خلاف أخي ليلى وسلمى وفاطم

    وجمل ومي أو بثينة أو دعد

  146. أرجّي بها الغفران والمنزل الذي

    يؤول إليه المصطفى جنة الخلد

  147. وصلى عليه اللّه ما لاح بارق

    على بارق أو حنَّ رعد على رعد
