1. العز ما يحمي حماه الصقَّل

    والمجد تبنيه العوالي النبل

    Glory cannot protect one who does not guard it

    And honor is built by the noble and high-minded

  2. والملك في نفي الكرى إدراكه

    ليس اعتماد الملك أمراً يسهل

    And realizing kingship lies in serving the people

    Kingship is not easily sustained

  3. والحمد حيث الصبر ثاو نازل

    والذم حيث العجز ثاو ينزل

    Praise belongs where there is patience

    Blame belongs where there is weakness

  4. والفخر بالتقوى وليست بالمنى

    والذكر ما لا يستحق الاكسل

    Pride lies in piety, not in wishes

    Remembrance belongs to those who are not lazy

  5. والفضل منسوب إلى أهل السخا

    والشر وصف حازه من يبخل

    Favor is attributed to the generous

    Evil is the trait of the stingy

  6. والسودد العالي الذي أربابه

    من يحمل الأثقال لا من يحمل

    True wealth belongs to those

    Who bear heavy burdens, not those who carry them

  7. والعهد ما من أهله من لم يكن

    جلداً إذا حل البلاء الأهول

    A promise is kept by those

    Who show strength when faced with frightful trials

  8. والمرؤ لما لم يكن في حربه

    ذا مرة صعباً علاه الأسفل

    A man who does not stand firm in battle

    Will be brought down by the lowest of men

  9. ما للمعالي صاحب رذل كما

    أن العلا لا يعتليها الأرذل

    Glory does not accompany a wicked man

    Just as the lofty summit is not climbed by the unworthy

  10. قد قلت للأخيار صبرً إنما

    بعلو منار المجد من لا يفشل

    I told the virtuous to have patience

    For the beacon of glory fails only the weak

  11. لكن أتتهم ذلة لما رأوا

    نار الوغى في كل واد تشعل

    But they were disgraced when they saw

    The fires of strife lit in every valley

  12. والحرب حرب بعدما تضرى فلا

    تخبو لظاها أو يروى المنصل

    War is war after it flares up

    Its flames cannot be hidden or doused by the sword

  13. فاليوم لا أدري أهم قد أبصروا

    أم هم هم والأمر فيهم مشكل

    Today I do not know if they have seen

    Or if they still waver and the matter remains ambiguous

  14. هم عدة إن أظهرتهم عدة

    هم جحفل إن حل فيهم جحفل

    They are many if shown as many

    They are a multitude if faced by a multitude

  15. إني وإن خانوا عهودي وانثنوا

    عن بيعتي خوف العدا لا أخمل

    Even if they broke their vows to me

    And abandoned their allegiance out of fear of enemies

  16. لا سيما إن عضني دهر فقد

    لاقى الخطوب الفادحات المرسل

    I will not neglect my duty

    Especially if fate has wounded me with immense sorrows

  17. لا تشتمي مهلاً ولو لم تنظري

    عدلاً سوى الماضي شجاك الأول

    Do not blame me, even if you see

    No justice but the past that first grieved you

  18. أو لم أكن حاولت ما حاولته

    حتى انثنى العاصي وعز الأرمل

    Or that I did not try as hard as I could

    Until even the defiant submitted and the widow was empowered

  19. أم تحسبين الدهر يثني عزمتي

    واللّه ما إن ظن ذا من يعقل

    Do you think fate can bend my resolve?

    By God, only the foolish would think so

  20. ما دمت في الاحياء حياً فاعلمي

    إني أنا البر الذي لا ينكل

    As long as I live, know

    That I am the righteous one who does not falter

  21. اللّه حسبي ثم حسبي عبهل

    يسمو إلى العليا أبوه عبهل

    God is enough for me, then enough for me

    The lofty goals of his father do not fail him

  22. يبدو إلى الأضيا أن يبدو كما

    يبدو سريعاً حيث يبدو القسطل

    He strives for the heights as though

    He swiftly reaches the loftiest peaks

  23. من أمه يرجو نوالاً ناله

    أو خائفاً مستنسراً لا يخذل

    From his mother he hopes for success she grants

    Or if afraid, reassured, she does not disappoint

  24. إن وعده أبداه أو ايعاده

    فالوعد والايعاد منه يسهل

    Whether he makes a promise or a threat

    His promise and threat come easily

  25. لو قد رأته مقلتي أو أمسكت

    كفي بيمناه لذل الجهل

    If only my eyes could see him

    Or if my hand grasped his right hand, ignorance would be shamed

  26. ذاك ابن معن عمرت أيامه

    الفارس العباس يا من يسأل

    That is the son of Ma'n whose days

    Were filled with glory, al-Abbas the brave, you who ask

  27. يا أيها السلطان إن الدين قد

    أضحى على الحال التي لا تجمل

    O Sultan, faith has become

    In a state that cannot be beautified

  28. كيف الرضى والدين عن انصالنا

    قدماً مضى واليوم فينا يخمل

    How can we be content when faith is disjointed from us

    One part has passed and today it languishes among us

  29. من أجل ضعف أيها السلطان أم

    جهل بنا أم ليس فينا فيصل

    Is it from weakness, O Sultan, or ignorance of us

    Or is there no decisiveness among us?

  30. أم هتك أستار العذارى بيننا

    من أن يقوم العدل فينا أجمل

    Or the violation of the honor of our maidens

    Prevents justice from being established among us?

  31. مالي إذا ناديت قوماً للعلا

    لم يستجب إلا بما لا يحمل

    Why, when I called the people to glory

    Did none respond except with what cannot be borne?

  32. ناديت في الاحياء حتى قيل لي

    أسمعت لكن من تنادي غفل

    I called out among the living until I was told

    "We hear you but do not know whom you call"

  33. ماذا على قحطان لو أضحى لها

    منها امام أريحي أعدل

    What can Qahtan do if it had

    A more just leader than Arrahee

  34. تمحو به عاراً وتبني مفخراً

    لكنها ذلت وأنت الموئل

    To erase its shame and build pride

    But it has been disgraced while you are its hope

  35. أنت الملاذ المفزع المنظور في

    قحطان والفرع المنيف الأطول

    You are the refuge, the expected resort for

    Qahtan and the tallest, straightest branch

  36. أنت الذي عم البرايا فضله

    هذا على خيل وهذا يرجل

    You whose favor has spread through the land

    Some on horseback, some on foot

  37. فاسمح بحاجة ضيفك الماضي وقم

    في أمر ضيف قد حواها لمنزل

    So allow the request of your past guest and stand

    For the request of a guest who has come to your abode

  38. أنصب لدين الحق أنفاً إنه

    مستهضم واه حقير مهمل

    Lift your spear for the true religion

    It is oppressed, alas, despised, neglected

  39. أنقذ بني قحطان والمم شعبهم

    واغمرهم طراً بعدل يشمل

    Save the people of Qahtan and their tribes

    And flood them with justice that includes all

  40. سير جيوشاً أو تميد الأرض من

    أرجائها فالسعد آت مقبل

    March armies or spread peace

    Throughout the land, for fortune is coming

  41. بادر بنا اخذ المنايا إنما

    دنياك ذكر والمنايا تعجل

    Make haste with us before death takes us

    For your world is but remembrance and death hastens

  42. لا تسمعن مقالة من وامق

    واش له رأي ضعيف أهزل

    Do not listen to the words of the feeble-minded

    Whose opinions are weak and foolish

  43. واعلم بأني مستعين واثق

    باللّه وهو المستعان المفضل

    Know that I seek help and am confident

    In God, for He is the best helper

  44. هذا وخذها من امام صاغها

    عن دهشة لما عناه المرحل

    This message comes from an imam who composed it

    In wonderment at what the journey confrontation revealed

  45. لا يبتغي فلساً وديناراً ولو

    سال العطا ما كنت إلا تجزل

    He does not seek a dirham or dinar even if

    You bestowed gifts, for you are ever generous

  46. لكن يرجى جحفلاً يحيي به

    ما سنه البر النبيء الأفضل

    But he hopes for an army to revive

    The exemplary righteousness of the best Prophet

  47. صلى عليه اللّه ما بدر أضا

    ليلاً وما لاح السماك الأعزل

    May Allah bless him, for he shone like the full moon at Badr

    And dawned like the bright morning stripped of its veil
