1. دعي ذا التصابي فالصبا غير ما مرضى

    ومزحك كفي وأخضبي الوجه أو وضي

    Let go of this coquetry, for youth is not eternal

    And cease your play, restrain yourself, and compose your face

  2. تريدين حبي بالخضوع والخفض

    وترجين أن أقضي مرادك لا أقضي

    You want my love through humility and lowering yourself

    And you hope that I fulfill your desires, but I will not

  3. وما أنا بالقالي لخود وضيئة

    غذتها طراوات الصبا اللين البض

    I am not one to be seduced by a rosy cheek

    Nourished by the softness of fleeting youth

  4. سلوب إِذا أدنت خلوب إذا نأت

    قضيب إِذا جاءت كثيب إِذا تمضي

    A stick when she draws near, a rock when she pulls away

    Erect when she approaches, flaccid when she leaves

  5. سوى أن لي ديناً ينهنه أربعي

    عن الغي فاستغشي رد اللعيب أو غضي

    Except that I have a faith that prohibits me

    From sin, so restrain your playfulness and compose yourself

  6. علي حرام أن أجبت إلى الصبا

    وإِن لاح ما قد لاح من جسمك الغض

    It is forbidden for me to respond to youth

    No matter how alluring your body appears through your clothes

  7. ولكن سلي ما شئت قرضاً ونحلة

    فلست بخيلاً بالهبات وبالقرض

    But ask me for whatever loan or gift you wish

    For I am no miser with gifts or loans

  8. وما الجود والافضال إِلا تجارة

    تزيدان في الأموال والجاه والعرض

    Generosity and charity are but a trade

    That increases one's wealth, stature, and honor

  9. يرى الكز أن الحزم في قبض كفه

    على ماله والحزم في المد لا القبض

    The wise see prudence in clasping

    One's money, while generosity lies not in clasping but in giving

  10. أراني إذا ما كنت رحباً ترحبت

    وإن ضقت ضاقت بي نواحي فضا الأرض

    You see that when I am generous, you become generous

    And when I withhold, the horizons of the earth constrict for me

  11. تباهي بجاهي عند جودي عشيرتي

    وتلقى أذى بخلي إِذا نيل في نحض

    My tribe boasts of my stature when I am generous

    And suffers harm from my stinginess when I withhold

  12. وبالجود لاقتني الأقارب بالرضا

    وبالجود لاقتني الأباعد بالخفض

    With generosity I gained my kin's pleasure

    And with generosity I gained strangers' lowering themselves

  13. هم الناس لولا الناس يحمل بعضهم

    لبعضهم ما زاد بعض على بعض

    People are nothing without others bearing

    Each other's burdens, some excelling over others

  14. وما زلت أغضي لابن عمي فحالتي

    وحالته الحسنى وإِن كان لا يغضي

    I continued to overlook my cousin's wrongs, though our states

    Are good and even if he does not overlook mine

  15. ووصلي لرحمي حين يقطع وصله

    ليرضى عن الشحنا وينهى عن البغض

    And I maintain ties with my kin when he severs them

    To please the quarrelsome and forbid hatred

  16. وإِن لم أصن جاري بكل صيانة

    أصون بها عرضي فمالي من عرض

    If I do not protect my neighbor with all propriety

    With which I protect my honor—for I have no honor

  17. وما لم أَواس الأخ عند افتقاره

    إليّ فلا يبكيه موتى ولا ينضى

    If I do not console a brother in his destitution

    Neither the living nor dead will mourn him

  18. ولست إِذا لم أرع للخل حقه

    إِذا غاب عن عيني بصاف ولا محض

    If I do not tend to a friend's rights when

    He is absent from my eyes with loyalty and sincerity

  19. أخي ما الذي إِذ لا القرابة قربت

    صلاتك بالاحسان أرعاك من عضي

    My brother, what ties you to me without kinship

    Is that your kindness has tended to me

  20. إِذا لم تدر عني المذمة والأذى

    فما قل من وصل ابن عمك بالرفض

    If you do not ward off blame and harm from me

    Then cease tying your cousin with rejection

  21. ركضت برجل البغض ثم عضضتني

    بناب اغتيال غاية العض والركض

    You raced on the foot of hatred, then bit me

    With the fang of backstabbing—the epitome of biting and racing

  22. بأي اجترام أم بأي خطيئة

    أتيتكم حتى تحملتم بغضي

    With what crime or sin did I wrong you

    That you harbored hatred of me?

  23. حبست لكم نفسي ونفسي سخية

    بذاك لكم أرجو رضا المسخط المرضي

    I devoted myself to you generously

    Hoping to please the displeased

  24. وكنت وذي الالاء أرجو لديكم

    مقاربة عند الحلاوة والمحض

    Yet I, loyal, hoped to gain

    Closeness to you in times of joy and sincerity

  25. فكان جزائي أن كل مصيبة

    أصبت بها ناب لكم عض في نحضي

    My reward was that every calamity

    That befell me was a fang biting my side

  26. فإن سرّكم هذا صبرت تكرماً

    وواللّه ما هذا يسرُّ ولا يرضي

    If this pleases you, I will be patient out of nobility

    Though by God this does not please or satisfy me

  27. وإِن يك من غير اعتماد نقيصة

    مقالكم جوداً وما قد مضى يمضي

    If it is not founded on any shortcoming

    Your words are generosity and what is past is past

  28. سلام عليكم لا أحاول ذمكم

    بحال ولو كنتم حراصاً على دحضي

    Peace be upon you, I will not try to blame you

    In any case, even if you were bent on debasing me

  29. ولم أهج ذا التقوى على الأرض كلها

    إِلى منتهى الاسلام في الطول والعرض

    I have not roused anyone in all the earth

    To the extent of Islam in length and breadth

  30. جزى اللّه عني بالجنان محمداً

    سليل حميد نجل بلج الرضى المرضي

    May God reward Muhammad for me with paradise

    The blessed scion, son of the pleasing redeemer

  31. فذاك هو الصافي النقي اعتقاده

    وذاك هو الحامي حمى الندب والفرض

    For he is the pure, the sincere in his faith

    And he is the protector who protected familial ties and religious duties

  32. رآى نصره في الحق فرضاً فقربت

    فوارسه في ساعة النصر والحض

    He saw victory for the truth as an obligation so his

    Horsemen approached in the moment of victory and preparation

  33. وأختم قولي بالصلاة على الذي

    له الموقف المحمود في عرصة العرض

    And I conclude my words with prayers upon the one

    Who has the praised station in the vast field
