When God forbade wine, that prohibition

Came from God's wisdom.

Tea took its place,

Ruling spirits like a commander.

It has merit in color, fragrance and taste—

Say of it what you wish, it is still sublime.

Gems in the midst of a constellation—

It lightens a gloomy heart, even delights the heedless.

When its cups are arranged amidst a gathering,

You see stars of flowers falling into mouths.

I see that everything our convivial gatherings contain

Are troops to repel care—its sultan is Shaahi.
