1. لما دعتني للعلا هماتي

    لبيتها مستلئماً لا ماتي

    When my aspirations called me to ascend,

    To her abode though troubled was my soul,

  2. مسترسلاً في القول لا أخشى الردى

    أدعو إِلى الاسلام والطاعات

    Speaking freely, fearing not the thorns ahead,

    I call to Islam and righteous deeds,

  3. من بعد ما أحكمت ما أحكمته

    من حكمة في محكم الآيات

    After establishing the wisdom I established

    In the decisive verses’ truthful leads,

  4. لكن دعاء كان في قرن نشا

    في أقبح الأزمان والأوقات

    But I called in an era of awakening

    In the ugliest times and moments,

  5. كم صحت من صوت ولما يسمعوا

    هيها لحي صاح في الأموات

    How loudly did I cry but when they heard

    Alas, for the living who shouts to the dead!

  6. لا نعمت عين ترى دين الهدى

    مستهضماً تروي من النومات

    No eye that sees the religion of guidance

    Squandered, relating but to slumbers,

  7. قد أصبح الاسلام مدحوراً وهم

    في غفلة ساهون في اللذات

    Islam became defeated while they

    In negligence, immersed in pleasures,

  8. ألهتم الدنيا فلم يحزنهم

    ما قد جرى في الدين من عورات

    Worldly life distracted them not saddened

    By the disgraces to religion occurred,

  9. صارت بيوت اللّه من بعد الهدى

    والذكر للصهباء والقينات

    After guidance, God’s houses became

    For blond, foreign idols conferred,

  10. والحج أضحي طامساً ميقاته

    بعد ازدحام الناس بالميقات

    And Hajj, its time obscured,

    After people crowded its stations,

  11. ثم الذي للحق أضحى فأضحا

    سبي العذارى الخرد الغضات

    Then the righteous were captured and seized,

    Virgin girls of tender age ensconced,

  12. كم طفلة حسنا غذتها نعمة

    في أشرف الآباء والأمات

    How many a girl, raised in prosperity

    By the noblest fathers and mothers,

  13. لا تعرف السرا من الضرا ولا

    ما تحدث الأيام من عاهات

    Knows not adversity from ease, or

    What days bring of afflictions and others,

  14. ترخي على الخدين لاستحيائها

    ستراً من الخالات والعمات

    Her cheeks covered in shyness,

    Veiled by aunts and elder sisters,

  15. أمست ودمع العين منها مسبل

    تمشي حذا الركبان في المومات

    Walking abreast, tears down her face strolled,

    In caravans of the shackled daughters,

  16. روعانة استارها مهتوكة

    بعد الحيا والحجب في الخانات

    Her flimsy veil crumpled,

    After beauty and veils in chambers watered,

  17. هذا الذي لو صحت من أسبابه

    يال النساء أقبلن في صرات

    If the causes were healed, the women would come

    In droves heated and borders cross,

  18. كانت بنو قحطان لا تغضي على

    ضيم ولا تكبو على الغارات

    Qahtan’s sons would not accept

    Oppression or attack by forces,

  19. فاستخلفت من بعدهم خلفاً رضوا

    من دهرهم بالرغم والزلات

    After them came a successor folk, pleased

    With their era’s stumbling and slips,

  20. لم تبق إِلا أمة مغبونة

    تسعى لكسب الشاء والحبات

    Only a duped nation remains

    Seeking the worthless and scraps,

  21. لا يقدح التأنيب فيهم لا ولا

    هم ينقذون العيب والقالات

    No advice penetrates them, they don’t

    Redress faults or moral lapses,

  22. أن يمدحوا اعتلوا وإن هم يذمموا ان

    سلوا وذا من أكبر الآفات

    If praised they transgress, if blamed they forget,

    Among the greatest moral relapses,

  23. من منهمُ طالبت نصراً قال لي

    كم لي وكم لابني وكم لامراتي

    When I asked one for victorious help, he said

    “I’ve me, my son and wife to appease!”

  24. حتى إِذا ما قلت أبشر بالعطا

    وانهض وشمر قال قبلا هات

    When I gave him good tidings of reward

    And said, rise up and roll your sleeves,

  25. لم يدر أن الناس لما ينقموا

    من سيرتي شيئاً سوى اخباتي

    He said, give me first, unaware

    None resent my conduct or misdeeds,

  26. كم من حليف قد حوى مأموله

    نحوي وولى ناقضاً بيعاتي

    How many allies failed my hopes

    And breached pacts we made together!

  27. للّه من قوم دناة ما لمن

    قاساهم جزؤ من الراحات

    God, what an ignoble people! Whoever

    Endured a bit of toil they couldn’t weather,

  28. لا زلت أدعوهم وهم من ذلهم

    يستصعبون السهل من حاجاتي

    I kept calling them, yet their humiliation

    Made easy tasks seem difficult endeavors,

  29. حتى أبحت الكل منهم صاغراً

    من حد ردمان إلى بيعات

    Until I left them all humiliated

    From Ramlah’s edge to Bait’s quarters,

  30. مدحي لهم قد كان جهلاً أنني

    من مدحهم قد بحت بالتوبات

    My praise of them was ignorance, I now repent

    And confess my misjudgment errors,

  31. قد تعلم الأيام أني لم أزل

    جلداً على ما نلت من كابات

    Days have taught me, I never stopped

    Being stoic, despite misfortunes overs,

  32. يا دهر ما أبقيت سهماً لم تصب

    قلبي به من أسهم الروعات

    Oh fate! No arrow you left

    That didn’t strike my heart with fervor

  33. أنت الذي عاديت كل مهذب

    وصفوت للسفهاء والآفات

    You who antagonized all of merit

    And chose fools and men of disfavor

  34. فاحكم بصدق هل تراخت همتي

    عند البلا أو كعت عن حملاتي

    Judge in truth, did my resolve weaken

    In afflictions or cease zeal and fervor?

  35. أو هل بدت مني شكايا أو درى

    ذو فطنة في الناس ما غاياتي

    Did I overtly complain or did one

    Of wisdom know my secret endeavor?

  36. أم أنت يا دهر المنايا شاهد

    أن اقتحام الهول من عاداتي

    Or are you, oh fate who brings demise, witness

    That braving fear is my nature ever?

  37. كم مرصد وعر مخوف صممت

    نفسي به لم تخش هماتي

    How many dangerous, frightening ambushes

    I was resolute to endure whatever,

  38. لكنني أدّيت صبراً لم يقل

    عن شدة هشَّت لها عزماتي

    But I was patient beyond the capacity

    That my strength’s firmness could sever

  39. إني لأهل البر والتقوى شفا

    لكن سمام للغوي العاتي

    I am the people of righteousness and piety,

    Cure for them but poison to defiant disbeliever,

  40. من ذا الذي في الناس يدعى عاتياً

    لم ترتعد لحياه من هيباتي

    Who dares claim he is a defiant disbeliever

    Yet didn’t tremble from my aura ever?

  41. فليزدد الحساد غيظاً أنني

    ما حالة لم تخش من حالاتي

    So let the envious swell with hatred that I

    Feared no state of affairs whatsoever!

  42. أسعى لوجه اللّه لا أسعى كمن

    يسعى لكسب خشية الفاقات

    I strive for God’s sake, not for the fleeting

    Fear of poverty like most endeavor,

  43. أرغمت في شرخ الصبا نفسي له

    ارغام عبد مخلص النيات

    I forced my soul in my youth for Him

    With resolute determination forever

  44. يا أيها النفس التي قد أخلصت

    للّه ترجو الفوز بالجنات

    Oh soul that to God loyalty professed

    Hoping to win the Gardens’ favor!

  45. لا ترفعي طرفاً إِلى دار الفنا

    فالموت آت والقضايا تات

    Lift not an eye unto the home of doom

    For death is coming, judgments deliver,

  46. واستعملي التشمير في كسب العلا

    إن الثوى في الخدر للغادات

    And take action in gaining the sublime

    For ladies of luxury are quitters,

  47. من لم يشمر طرتي أذياله

    للّه لم يسبق إلى الخيرات

    Whoever doesn’t roll up his sleeves

    To God, won’t reach goodness ever,

  48. من لم يفارق لذة الدنيا فما

    من لذة يرجو من القينات

    Whoever doesn’t leave worldly pleasures

    No pleasures in the Gardens will savor,

  49. والجنة الزهراء دار خلتها

    ما لم تحط وصفاً بها أبياتي

    The immaculate Gardens, their precincts void

    If verses can’t aptly flavor,

  50. عين بها تهتزُّ في مشياتها

    مثل الغصون البرّع الذروات

    Eyes trembling in their walk

    Like branches quivering in fervor,

  51. ما أحسن العينا إِذا ما أشرقت

    من رفرف خضر على الروضات

    How beautiful are eyes when gleaming

    With green reflections on the acres!

  52. ما أحسنا لعينا إِذا العينا مشت

    في زمرة الولدان والجارات

    How beautiful if walking in a troop

    Of lads and lovely neighbors,

  53. تلك الشفا إِن عانقت أو لائمت

    أو ناطقت عن أحسن الأصوات

    Those lips, if embracing or touching

    Or speaking most melodious phrases,

  54. تلك التي شوقي إليها تارة

    يخبو ويصبو تارة تارات

    The ones I long for, sometimes ardor

    Concealed, sometimes kindled and blazes,

  55. أرجو لقاها بعد أن ألقى النبي

    خير البرايا سيد السادات

    I hope to meet after meeting the Prophet

    Best of creations, the master of masters

  56. صلى عليه اللّه ربي ما جرى

    تقديره للرزق والأقوات

    God bless him, my Lord, for the destiny

    Of provisions and livelihood casted!
