لي سَكَنٌ شَطَّتْ به غُرْبَةٌ
جادتْ لها عينايَ بالمُزْنِ
I have a beloved whom exile has carried far away;
for that exile, my eyes have poured forth rain clouds.
ما حَسُنَ الصبحُ ولا راقني
بياضُهُ مذ بانَ في الظَّعن
Dawn’s beauty does not please me, nor does
its whiteness, since he departed with the caravan.
كأنما الصُّبْحُ لنا بعدَهُ
عينٌ قد ابْيَضَّتْ من الحزن
As though the dawn, for us after him,
were an eye gone white with grief.
