1. يا شمسَ خِدْرٍ مالها مَغرِبُ

    أَرامةٌ دارُكِ أمْ غُرَّبُ

    O sun of radiant beauty with no setting

    Is Aram your abode or are you an Arabian sun?

  2. ذهبتِ فاستعبرَ طرفي دماً

    مفضَّضُ الدمعِ به مُذْهَبُ

    You left and my eyes shed bloody tears

    My tears flowing with sorrow tinged in blood

  3. اللهَ في مهجةِ ذي لوعةٍ

    تَيَّمَهُ يومَ النَّقا الرَّبرب

    I swear to God the Most High, He who witnessed my agony

    On the day we parted, so sad and gloomy

  4. شامَ بريقاً باللِّوى فامترى

    أضوءُهُ أم ثغرُكِ الأشنب

    The evening gleamed in the distance at Liwa

    Was it your radiance or your brilliant smile?

  5. أشبه غَمّاً يومُهُ ليلَهُ

    حتى استوى الأدهمُ والأشهب

    Your day is filled with sorrow like the night

    As if the dark-skinned and fair are equal

  6. سُرورُهُ بعدَكُمُ تَرْحَةٌ

    وصُبْحُهُ بعدكمُ غَيْهَبُ

    Your joy after you left is but fleeting

    And the morn without you is woebegone

  7. ناشدتكَ اللهَ نسيمَ الصَّبا

    أين استقرَّتْ بعدَنا زينبُ

    I implore you by God, O breeze of morning

    Where did you settle after us, O Zainab?

  8. لم تسْر إلا بشذا عَرْفِها

    أو لا فماذا النَّفَسُ الطيبُ

    You only brought tidings of her sweet scent

    Else, what are souls for if not for her gentle waft?

  9. و يا سحابَ المُزنِ ما بالُنا

    يشوقُنا ذيلُكَ إذ يُسْحَبُ

    O clouds of sorrow, why do we yearn

    When your tails are dragged withdrawn?

  10. هاتِ حديثاً عن مغاني اللِّوى

    فعهدُكَ اليومَ بها أقرَبُ

    Bring us news of the one we pine for

    Since your time with her is more recent

  11. إيهٍ وإن عذَّبني ذِكرُها

    فمِن عذابِ النَّفسِ ما يَعْذُبُ

    Alas! Though thoughts of her torment me

    Some torment cleanses the soul of blight

  12. هل لعِبَتْ بالعَرَصاتِ الصَّبا

    فمحَّ منها للصِّبا مَلعَبُ

    Did you play in meadows, O breeze?

    To entertain the youth, a fun troop?

  13. أمرضَها سُقياك إذ جُدْتَّها

    كم غصَّ ظمآنٌ بما يشرَبُ

    Or did the watering make her sick

    When you refreshed her, though she did not drink?

  14. يا مَن شكى من زمنٍ قسوةً

    أين السُّرى والعيسُ والسَّبْسَبُ

    O you who complained of time’s tyranny

    Where are the Pleiades, the Lion, and Hydra?

  15. أفلحَ من خاضَ بحارَ الدُّجى

    وصهوةُ العزِّ له مركبُ

    One who braved the seas of darkness prevails

    The steeds of honor are his ships

  16. أليسَ في البيداءِ مندوحةٌ

    إن ضاقَ يوماً بالفتى مذهبُ

    Is there no refuge in the desert

    If the path for a man gets too straight?

  17. لأخبطُ الليلَ ولو أنّهُ

    ذو لبَدٍ أو حيةٌ تَلْسُبُ

    I will roam the night even if

    It were a serpent or snake to shun

  18. من همَّتي حادٍ ومن عَزمتي

    هادٍ ولو ضلَّ بيَ الكوكبُ

    My resolve is tempered, my determination is firm

    Though planets may stray, my course stays true

  19. تحملُ كوري فيه عَيْرانَةٌ

    إلى سوى مَهْرَةَ لا تُنْسَبُ

    I bear my pride which needs no lineage

    To lead to glory, no roots traced

  20. أَسري إلى العَليا بها في الدُّجى

    وفَوْدُهُ من شُهْبِهِ أَشْهَبُ

    I travel the high road therein in darkness

    Its caravan gleams like comets alight

  21. وإنما تُعْرَفُ سُبْلُ العُلى

    يسلُكها الأنجبُ فالأنجبُ

    The roads to glory can only be known

    Taken by the best of the best of men

  22. إن كان للفضل أبٌ إنَّهُ

    نجلُ بني عبد العزيزِ الأبُ

    If merit has a father, it is

    The son of the Banu Abdulaziz clan

  23. المُنْتَضَى من جَمَراتِ الأُلى

    على السِّماكينِ لهمْ مَنْصِبُ

    The finest mettle, fired to prove

    Their place on high, no credentials needed

  24. من أُسرةٍ إنْ شهدوا نادياً

    زانَ بهم أو وَلَدوا أَنجبوا

    They are a family, if gathered or born

    They bring pride to any council or band

  25. تنحطُّ قحطانٌ وساداتُها

    عنهمْ وتمشي خلفهمْ تغلِبُ

    With them, Qahtan falls from glory

    Walking behind them, overpowered

  26. بيضٌ مصاليتُ قضى سَرْوُهُم

    أنَّ جَداهُمْ مَطَرٌ صَيِّبُ

    Their visage white like lightning flash

    As if their ancestors sent down sweet rain

  27. لم تخلُ من نارٍ لهمْ في الدجى

    ثنيَّةٌ علياءُ أو مَرقَبُ

    They have a fire in the darkness of night

    A lofty dune or watchful tower

  28. جنابُهُمْ أحوى وأبياتُهُمْ

    تُوسَعُ بالإكرامِ أو تَرْحُبُ

    Their dwellings harbor, their homes

    Expand with bounty or provide haven

  29. حيثُ قبابُ المجدِ مضروبةٌ

    تُعْمَدُ بالعلياء أو تُطْنَبُ

    Wherever glory’s domes are pitched

    Pillared by the noble and starry eyed

  30. والأسَلُ السُّمرُ وبيضُ الظُّبا

    دونَ العِدا والضُمَّرُ الشُزَّبُ

    The stallions roam free, white oryx graze

    Safe from enemies, red fox roams unfazed

  31. والعزُّ معقودُ الحُبا أقْعَسٌ

    والبأسُ مطرورُ الشَّبا مُغْضَبُ

    Glory bound tight and valor unbridled

    Wrath unleashed like the bursting of clouds

  32. هل شيَّدَ العلياءَ إلا فتىً

    راقَ به المَحْفَلُ والمركبُ

    Only a noble knight could build such glory

    Pride of the gathering, a ship made worthy

  33. لا يرغبُ الدهرُ وأيامُهُ

    والسَّعدُ إلا في الذي يرغبُ

    Fate does not yearn for him nor do days

    Prosperity wants only whom he desires

  34. يرى العلا من خيرِ ما يُقْتَنَى

    والحمدَ من أفضلِ ما يُكْسَبُ

    He sees the heights as the best to attain

    Gratitude the finest thing to reap

  35. فاليُمْنُ عن يُمناهُ لا ينثني

    واليُسْرُ عن يسراهُ لا يَعْزبُ

    Success clings to him, does not waver

    Ease is his shadow, follows after

  36. نجمٌ نجيبٌ بدرُها شمسُها

    عمّارُها حُوَّلُها القُلَّبُ

    A noble star, his light is the moon

    His reformer, the turner of spheres

  37. في الدَّسْتِ منه علمٌ أصيدٌ

    وفي الوغى خر غامة أغلب

    In war, he hurls piercing arrows

    The brave hero prays when he shoots

  38. كم خطبَ المجدَ له صارمٌ

    في منبرٍ من كفِّه يَخطَبُ

    His blade clashes with the water

    Fire matches his strike in fervor

  39. ذو ظمأ يشربُ ماءَ الطُّلا

    وليس يُرويهِ الذي يشربُ

    From his blade comes peerless gems

    That reap souls but cannot be reaped

  40. تخالُهُ مُنصلتاً بارقاً

    أو كوكباً و قبساً يلهبُ

    Each comet near him is dormant

    Each lightning flash tamed at his hand

  41. أَرسل في الحرب شُواظاً له

    يَصلى لظاهُ البطلُ المُحربُ

    His scabbard parts to reveal his blade

    As algae lifts off the surface of a pond

  42. تساجلُ الماءَ له صفحةٌ

    ويعدلُ النارَ له مَضربُ

    He strikes the helm with wondrous blows

    Raising the dome of pride on high

  43. كُلِّلَ من إفرندِهِ جوهراً

    ينهبُ أرواحاً ولا يُنْهَبُ

    He pierces through the armor of his foe

    A planet bursts forth in the clash and cry

  44. كلُّ شهابٍ عنده خامدٌ

    وكلُّ برقٍ عنده خُلَّبُ

    On his mount, four eagles take flight

    East and west fold before them in might

  45. يفترُّ عن صفحته غمدُهُ

    كما انجلى عن مائه الطُّحلُبُ

    His neighing tells of his noble breed

    His nature demonstrates his excellence

  46. ويضربُ الهامَ به أروعٌ

    سُرادق الفخرِ به يُضربُ

    If he sought prey when mounted

    His rider finds nothing escapes his grasp

  47. يخترقُ النَّقعَ على أشقرٍ

    ينقضُّ منه في الوغى كوكبُ

    The winds walk humbly behind

    In awe of his speed, lightning itself marvels

  48. يطيرُ في الخُضْرِ به أربعٌ

    يُطْوى لها المشرقُ والمغربُ

    With him every meadow is adorned

    Every pasture ornamented and bright

  49. صَهيلُهُ عن عِتقِهِ مُفْصِحٌ

    وخَلْقُهُ عن سَبْقِهِ مُعربُ

    His forelock waves like a bough

    Blown by the morning breeze in delight

  50. لو طلب العنقا على متنهِ

    راكبُهُ ما فاتَهُ مَطلبُ

    His hooves, if still somewhat green

    Leave the air stripped bare of motes in flight

  51. الريحُ تكبو خلفَهُ من وَنىً

    والبرقُ من سرعته يَعجَبُ

    He carries valor none but the sword can equal

    No talons compared to his piercing might

  52. يُزْهَى به كلُّ زُها جحفلٍ

    مَجْرٍ ويزدانُ به المِقْنَبُ

    He brought him near every landmark

    A molded minaret or ship sailing night

  53. له تليلٌ مثلُ ما ينثني

    غصنٌ به ريحُ الصَّبا تلعبُ

    A brown doe or one just the same

    Stabbing with all her might as she takes to flight

  54. وحافرٌ إن يكُ ذا خُضرةٍ

    فالجوُّ من عِثْيَرِهِ أكْهَبُ

    Buzzing with poison and the nectar of bees

    Some of the swarm is hoped for, some is blight

  55. يحملُ في صهوتهِ ضيغَماً

    ليس سوى السيفِ له مِخلبُ

    You see from her dye the essence distilled

    Strung as pearls, unpierced, gleaming bright

  56. قرَّبَهُ من كلِّ أُكرومةٍ

    مُهنَّدٌ أو سابحٌ مُقْربُ

    Voiceless yet eloquently speaking

    Her nature demonstrates her excellence

  57. أو صَعدةٌ سمراءُ أو مثلها

    يراعةٌ تَطعنُ إذ تَكتُبُ

    Such are riches created for bliss

    Their radiance never wanes or fades from sight

  58. تمجُّ سماً وجَنَى نحلةٍ

    فريقُها يُرجى كما يُرْهَبُ

    From a Giver I never knew before

    That glory in totality could be granted outright

  59. تريكَ من صِبغَتها جوهراً

    يُنْظَمُ في الطِّرْسِ ولا يُثْقَبُ

    With willpower lofty, cannot be surpassed

    Resolve unwavering, cannot be overcome

  60. خرساءُ لكنَّ لها منطقاً

    أقرَّ بالسَّبْقِ لها يَعربُ

    And wisdom that falls short in description

    By the most ornate poet with jewels of insight

  61. تلك بنانٌ خُلِقَتْ للنَّدى

    فما تني أنوارُها تُسْكَبُ

    My portion of fate mourned by him

    Mended what cracked or split outright

  62. من واهبٍ لم أدرِ من قَبلِه

    أَنَّ المعالي جَمَّةً تُوهَبُ

    My refuge, a lofty towering peak

    Rivaling the stars, a shoulder to lean into night

  63. ذي همَّةٍ علياءَ لا تُرْتَقَى

    وعزمةٍ صمّاءَ لا تُغْلَبُ

    A pinnacle rose on the horizon for him

    Where Aldebaran and Capricorn alight

  64. وفطنةٍ قصَّرَ عن نَعْتِها

    أو بعضِها المُطْنِبُ والمسهب

    I harnessed my double-edged sword to his side

    What was taken by force could not be relinquished in fight

  65. حظّي من الأيام نَدبٌ به

    يُرْأَبُ ما يُصْدَعُ أو يُشْعَبُ

    Inspired by him, my poetry flows like a spring

    As the meadow is slit by the roaming comet’s light

  66. ومعقلي طودُ عُلاهُ الذي

    يزاحمُ النجمَ له مَنْكِبُ

    So the Pleiades, since adorned by it

    Are envied by virgins and turning grey of sight

  67. أوفتْ على الأُفْقِ له ذروةٌ

    لاذتْ به الجوزاءُ والعَقرَبُ

    Yearning for it, though above all homes

    In the highest peaks is where they take flight

  68. سنَّيْتُ أبرادَ ثنائي على

    عِطْفَيْهِ من حَوكيَ ما تُسلَبُ

    The gorgeous gazelle is newly betrothed

    And her match is the first to propose her right

  69. سال به الطبعُ مَعيناً كما

    شقَّ بساطَ الروضةِ المِذنَبُ

  70. فالطرسُ مذ أُلبسَ منها حُلىً

    تحسُدُهُ العذراءُ والشُّيبُ

  71. راغبةٌ فيهِ على أنها

    عن كلِّ بيتٍ في العُلا تَرغَبُ

  72. والغادةُ الحسناءُ مخطوبةٌ

    وكفؤُها أوَّلُ مَنْ يَخطُبُ
